Well, it turned out the meeting was not to determine the sentence,
but to determine the actual method of carrying it out.
I’m guessing King Garion did not really expect Big Red to agree
with the sentence and wishes to recognize the fact privately.

I did say as much the results of the trial was already set in stone just the method
needed to be cleared up King Garion didn’t want to look like a cruel and heartless
leader to his people this way those included can explain if anyone objects and
at least 2 there would of made the most noise possible.

Station Master: Captain, do you wish to know why we treat everyone so cautiously?
Kev Lan: Yes, It does seem a bit over the top.
Station Master: The first time your species met our lightly armed diplomatic
vessel they FIRED on us perhaps that was meant as a warning shot, but that
encounter did not go well for your warships That would normally be a declaration
of war but we don’t want war, we want fair and equitable trade.
So we classed it as an act of piracy and you will be
meeting with Lady Teresa to discuss a trade treaty.

Dang fingers always mess things up, have to correct almost every word!

Long rope? (as opposed to a short rope?)
Ich nicht verstein (I don’t understand)

The longer the rope the faster they fall and it makes sure the spinal cord is cut through
short rope means they won’t die fast and clean it’ll be a slow and painful strangulation.
Any time someone hangs themself I’m afraid the latter is the most likely result. You need
at least a 6 ft (2 meter) drop to make it a quick and clean end.

A long rope allows the person to get nearer to terminal velocity.
A short rope might allow the perp to still be going too slow to
break the neck and fatally injure the spine. That would result in
a slow death, and a more gruesome sight for anyone watching.

A long rope gives more time for the body to accelerate before being brought
to an abrupt halt, thus making a swift death from a broken neck more likely.
A short rope, conversely, makes a slow death by asphyxiation more likely.

What the others said about rope length. Too short and the condemned strangles to death
which is both gruesome and lengthy. Hut it is possible to make the rope TOO long. If
the rope is too long then a couple of scenarios come to mind. One is that if the gallows
platform is not high enough then too long a rope might let the condemned man’s feet
touch the ground. (Hence the whole “Hang ’em high.” thing.) But another possibility
arises in the case of excessive rope length. Assuming the platform is high enough off
the ground, too much rope could allow the body to attain sufficient downward velocity
for the neck not only to break but for the condemned’s head to he jerked “clean” off.
I have read of this happening. I have also read of studies done in old prison graveyards
on the remains of prisoners executed by hanging. Apparently a properly “executed”
hanging leaves very distinct damage on the cervical spine. According to the article
I read it turned out that only about 1/3rd of the remains examined showed evidence of
being properly hung. Knowing that I would opt for lethal injection. Huge dose of
pentothal would render the condemned no longer truly conscious (actually pentothal
doesn’t truly make the person unconscious. What it really does is make short term memory
too short for anything to register) and then they could be terminated painlessly. I
promise that if you put enough pentothal into someone the will not be at all aware of
      what is happening.

This is a very clear message to the core worlds: we were your slaves
but now not only are we your equals but with help from the dragon
empire we have surpassed you so DON’T mess with us anymore!

I’m loving this story line I’m on the edge of my desk chair
    waiting on how it progresses!

Hey Petercat, just wanted to say I always read along. I don’t have a great deal to say, but I lurk.
OTOH I think shooting the miscreants would be less of a mess and quicker. Hanging is ugly. IMO

actually shooting is messier,,. and, unlike hollyweird shooting someone is
NOT immediately fatal.! in most cases the criminal passes out from shock,
then dies from blood loss.. there have been cases of not passing out and
      taking 5 minutes to die…

Well now, that’s something to consider. Probably the only tidy way is an injection.
Its always going to hurt the person doing the execution, even if its greatly deserved.
        Its a problem.

Even the shots are iffy I have a very high resistance to pentathol and have woke twice now
during surgery it’s a common pre-op shot and it requires closely watched administration it’s
also the drug that killed Michael Jackson too strong a dose and you simply forget to breathe
          etc…
Worse case was in ’04 I had my left kidney removed due to cancer and I have a clear memory
of looking down my chest and a weird pile of red/blue/grey stuff piled on my chest… then I
heard a gasp and then nothing.

I am am also somewhat resistant to some anesthesia and pre-op shots or at least I was when younger. Back in 77 I needed surgery to repair a hernia (seems I had picked up a 10′ x 10′ steel garden shed and walked it across the yard) and when the anesthesiologist started the pentathol she told me to start counting counting back from 100. I started counting. I got down to 85 and exclaomed “Wow! It feels like a cool spring welling up inside!” The surgeon told me to “Shut up and count!” IMS I faded out around 65 or so. They told me later that – TWICE – I started to come out of the ethrane so as the anesthesiologst put it she had to push me waaayyy down to keep me out. The next thing I remember was in recovery with a buddy of mine who was a med tech shaking my shoulders and telling me “Come on, Mullins, BREATHE! Come on, you big dummy, BREATHE!” My wife was out in the hall and could hear all of this. And, asyou might suspect, she was just a tad disturbed by what she was hearing.

I can think of worse.ways.to.go than while unconscious simply forgetting to breathe. Have.to beat either the gas chamber or firing squad. Would also beat the electric chair. Anybody who has seen “The Green Mile” will never forget the horriffic scene where Michael Jeter’s character was executed. (BTW, that was based upon a real incident in 1946.) Talk about a bad way to go! I remember reading of an execution where they had to shock a guy 3 times before his heart stopped. Hopefully the guy lost consciousness during the first round.

And the core looses two more ships. At least that’s my guess. Even without any
negotiations they are expected back no sooner than in a week.
More importantly, the Empire gets the newest information from their ship’s computers.
Considering what we heard in the last strip about the ship numbers
every single ship counts right now.

I think I’m getting a picture now. For the Empire the war begun the moment when they
decided to cut into the Core World’s mercantile empire. Their mission to Xanadu and
trying to get a seat on the council is just a smokescreen to gain more time. Time the
Empire and it’s new members use to grow stronger while they weaken the Core Worlds.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the Empire captured any Core World ship in the fringe and
keeps capturing them as long as they come. While a council seat will be advantageous,
they can do without it. For example, with the seat they can not only extend the time
until the shooting war starts, but also force them to throw the mutual defense pact
out. Especially the latter would probably not only pit Core World against Core World,
but maybe even corporations against worlds. Someone will think into that direction
and once their unity shatters someone will act on that thought. And at that moment
the war is essentially over. No single Core World can stand against the
    Empire right now.
The only question is if a Core World hits on the idea of becoming a
member of the Empire. That could be very interesting.

Just musing here. The possibilities make me giddy in a
way I haven’t been in a long time.
Let’s see how this plays out.

I’m sure the ships are being emptied so they can be searched and assessed and the computers
can be memory dumped. But if the pretense is fear of contamination, I’m surprised they’re being
transferred to the surface and not to a quarantine ship.

As for the vermin, I’m glad exile wasn’t an option. That smacks of passing the buck, making them
    somebody else’s problem.

My brother, the former Squid, was exiled to Hawaii. He was assigned to the big hospital at Pearl.
He and my sister-in-law absolutely hated it. Seems it’s an okay place to visit but it didn’t
take long for them to realize just how small even the “Big Island” really is.

Sorry, Catman but I have to call you on the 1st story. I cannot believe that Red
(or possibly also Janice) would go for capital punishment under ANY circumstances.
Everything I have seen of leftist ideologues such as Red is that they are unlikely
to go against their ideology no matter what the crime or how clear and unequivocal
the evidence. From what I have observed ideologues such as Red are highly unlikely
to sacrifice their ideology upon the altar of mere fact. I’m also skeptical that
Janice would be all right with capital punishment. Which brings up an interesting
scenario. What would Garion have done if Red insisted upon refusing to support
    executing Ryder and co.?

Sorry Bill but if you had ever seen the horrors of a brutal hack and slash murder you might have second
thoughts too much less watching a child being brutally raped to death… and then another… and another…

I could go into details of the pictures I had shoved in and on my face but I don’t wish to relive it much less
      hurt anyone with those details.

A very good surmise Bill. It could be that Red saw something too horrific even for her.
Janet was able to bring her self-righteousness to the fore when she saw Tenshi’s state.
She was able to vent on Garion to appease her conscience.
It will be interesting to hear Red’s reason.

      May 13, 2022, 14:32 | # | Reply

I must take issue with your use of leftist.
I find this to be true wherever the ideolog is politically.
Red is not OK with it, but is resigned to it.
Probably seeing it as the best of possible choices.
      Note her posture.

“If you could reason with the Religious Right. there would be No religious right!”
it’s actually people ,, but you get my point…
i’m guessing here,. up till the fall and during, all the ‘extreme’ were removed
from the area,. yes there are hard liners,. but none of the extreme..

and again that’s why Tenshi was there,, with the “Victim” there,
they could not get on their moral high ground box,.!
