Hmm. First non-humanoid species we’ve met. (By which I mean the
classic definition, erect torso, 2 legs on the bottom of it, 2 arms
and a head on top, face on the front of the head.) A spider and a
something with at least 4 tentacles with suckers ending in different-
colored eyes and a mouth stalk. No visible manipulator organs on the
spider. Telekinetic? This will be interesting. And they’re pretending
to not recognize Catians rather than call them cat-faced humans.
That’s interesting too.
The receptionist reminds me heavily of the “twins” from the first
Men in Black movie. The humanoid form tends to be the most
efficient with some variations of course.
I figure those tentacles would work just fine for whatever manipulations
the species might need to perform. I do have a problem with arthropods
that large operating in a nominal 1 g field. Even assuming a better
respiratory system than terrestrial species, as I understand it the
mechanics of joints on exoskeletons preclude creatures getting to be
that large.
Is PC intimating that the two non-humanoid (upright, bilateral symmetry,
endoskeleton etc) species evolved on Xanadu along side the others?
Tentacles mainly work in a water environments because there’s no bones
to support them if you’ve ever watched the discovery channel etc how
octopus move out of the water that shows what I’m talking about. Man-
sized insects were found in the fossil records on earth but the oxygen
levels were twice what they are today so it could be possible if their
planet of origin is lower gravity and higher oxygen levels.

L Neil used that idea more than once, he used them in the book “Thomas
Pane Maru” although I bet a different description these were a disc
shape, lower than a human but much wider, red in color, eyes on top
and mouths and such on the lower area. The crew was trying to stop a
nuclear war on their planet. I’d read the book and the other two
in the series it’s quite good!
Clearly the wormholes go to far more locations than first suggested
I wondered if we were going to start seeing races that were not of
the Xanadu original number. Space is vast there’s bound to be far
more races on other worlds than just the ones from there.
I’m sorry to say, but that Arachnid in the last panel, would have had
me out the door, on a shuttle and docked with the mother ship before
anyone heard my yelling, “NOPE!!!”… I find spiders of all variety
discomforting, but one that big? Sayonara ya’ll! I’m outta here!!!
Hi Charles;
The largest spider I have actually seen is called a Huntsman Spider here in Australia. It’s a non poisonous ambush predator (nasty bite though due to risk of infection) It has a double lobed flattened disc-like body with long legs. It was first seen above my bedroom door. After unsuccessfully trying to trap it in a cardboard box so we could release it outside (where it belonged). The last we saw of it was when it disappeared down the air conditioning vent (also in my bedroom)
No kidding, the leg spread was wider than the three foot doorway – estimated size about one metre (40inch).
David.
IF and I mean IF,, that was a spider, not a coconut crab.
call some one to get it.!! because that is breaking ALL
the records,. the largest on record is 12 inch (30cm).
mine (bird eater) was record note worthy at
10 inch (25.4cm).
Hi Rob;
Definitely a huntsman; although humongous compared to others I have seen (leg spread 150-200cm {6-8inch}).
A bit late to get someone to locate it now as that was at least 25 years ago.
Didn’t own a camera at the time so no image to prove it.
David
Ok, well… Thank you for THAT nightmare fuel… As if the threat
of a potential nuclear exchange wasn’t bad enough, real life giant
mutant spiders… Possibly real life RADIOACTIVE mutant giant
spiders… Whatta world…
I’m with Charles re spiders – and arachnids in general. Actually I’m
not all that big on arthropods. To my eye all arthropods are the
essence of alien. Even cephalopods don’t creep me out like pretty
much any arthropod. Centipedes and millipedes are the worst.
Re the receptionist and tentacled creatures, I know elephants are
pretty adept with their trunks. Also, what’s to preclude an
endoskeletal creature from having tentacles?
I never said it wasn’t possible just unlikely elephant trunks are
massive and powerful since they use them to gather food and their
young as well as defense. We can’t actually see the body of this
creature all we see is 4 eye stalks and a mouth stalk.
I think PeterCat is going to have to add a reference page of Alien
Races, so we can keep track of them, and be sure we know which ones
are the good guys!
Might be a good idea however if they are a one time feature of a plot
line it wouldn’t make much sense to create a lore on them just for
the sake of details for a plot line that may never appear again.
Maybe a brief “who’s who” and leave it at that.
Don’t forget this is a developing aspect of the universe that the
wolf/dragon empire that’s far from finished we only got a brief
glimmer of the “demon” race so far a reference would give out spoilers.
I own a 3D printer and I’ve only just started to model designs it’s
an exhausting and time consuming process Petercat has much greater
detail to model 3-4 times a week as well as outlining story lines
and writing dialogs.
The “new species” question is interesting in its own right, besides the implication
that the spider doesn’t know Catians are, officially, humans (or is acting like it
doesn’t). It also SEEMS to imply that new species show up now and then, some
that weren’t part of the Diaspora off Xanadu. Or, it could be nothing more than
the trope of a current resident greeting new arrivals with a “new people” or
“new faces” line and really mean nothing. I guess we’ll learn more soon.

Looks like PC is cribbing a bit from L Neil’s “Roswell Texas”
tri-pedal alien.
(Just my observation and opinion. but I could be wrong)
L Neil used that idea more than once, he used them in the book “Thomas

Now we’re getting somewhere! Talking giant spider!
Guy behind the desk is pretty hot too.

I just want to state again, that’s a very impressive double-barrel
she’s sporting in the vote incentive.
I most heartily agree.
