Just thinking that “ESMAY” (an acronym?) is new.
Now will we see a Ship AI / “Scotty” bromance?
Or a HAL / Dave train wreck? (“Open the pod bay doors, HAL” “I’m afraid I can’t do that, Dave”)
Is the lack of sensor “feeling” an accident, a mis/loose wire, or (DUN DUN DUUUUUU!!) sabotage?
I’m surprised there isn’t a redundancy backup (second door sensor wired in parallel, third sensor to measure air pressure & and any appreciable changes thereof)
Sure I read SciFi. But it’s been awhile. Never even heard of Elizabeth Moon. I’ll have to look her up.
My g’son gave me a set of Brandon Sanderson (I know, more fantasy then SciFi), and I’m just now getting one of those “round toit” thingies.
My g’son knows my weakness, and does his best to feed my addiction.
Plus (my guilty reading pleasure….shhhhhh) Brandon Mull has another book or two coming out soon. Need to find & buy them.
PLUS…..there is/was a Polish SciFi author I read years ago, I need to re-research his name & books and find and buy them.
Plus work. Plus take care of house and wife (oops….wife and house). Plus…Plus….more first world problems.
I don’t know when I read the Vatta books – can’t find them anywhere in my electronic library – but I do remember reading them. I just looked on Amazon and I can’t afford Elizabeth Moon. One of her books costs almost as much as a month’s Kindle Unlimited membership. Old, retired, poor. Sorta goes together.
“Bigotry, its effect on international diplomacy” Four pages. Double spaced.
That sounds more like an assignment for the Senior bureaucratic corps, not frosh college airheads.
I’m betting a Dragon to a doughnut that there’s going to be a lot of caffeine all-nighters, lots of reference and hair pulling, keyboard melt-downs, RAM overloads, writes, re-writes, re-re-writes (ad nauseum), and pissed off attitudes until that assignment is finished.
Then…….it will be “so long, sayonara, never wanna see ya”.
“Bigotry” Interesting word. “Racism” has been redefined such that only Caucasians can exhibit it. Bigotry, on the other hand can still be exhibited by anyone. Reckon how long that will last.
It’s simple, really.
Control the vocabulary -> control the language
Control the language -> control the narrative
Control the narrative -> control . . .
Damned near everything!
I do all I can every day to increase the vocabulary of those around me.
There is supposed to be a ship on the other side of that suspect docking door? Would think being suited up is procedure when checking anything with a possible vacuum on the other side?
first this a comic.. as the artist said. ” lets assume they ‘did’ that.”
and me.. her checking the panel, makes me think she is at least ‘manually checking.’
then Heinlein ,. when you live in space, you learn Safety Procedures before you learn to walk!
Gee, I sure hope that ship is in a pressurized “dry dock” during refit… Seems like that would be one of the things you’d want to do for pressure hulls. Either pop all inner airlock doors open, and over pressure the hull with a smoke check for leaks, or seal both inner and outer doors, with smoke pots in them, and over pressure the air locks to check for leaks, if you’re only checking airlocks. (Personally, I’d do the whole ship check… That would definitely isolate another “ISS/Soyuz leak” problem to ground or space).
I see no more bemused smiles on the young woman’s faces.
They were thoroughly enjoying the train wreck.
Until they found out that they were conductors on that train.
I got the impression this wasn’t the first time Shimizu had made Brita’s and Helen’s escort/orientation duties difficult, maybe unpleasant.
Esmay is intelligent AI in ship computer? Have we met her before?
And the Cat sayeth…

With prioritizing (three is excellent; two is acceptable; one is ok, but better get ‘er fixed NOW!)
You don’t read Science Fiction?
You don’t read Elizabeth Moon?
Esmay Suiza?
I’ve read some of the Vatta books. Don’t recall Esme but it has been a while.

1984 Newspeak is upon us.
Ah yes, A 1984 reference… Just 37 years late…
Deduction: If Miral is carrying twins, Brian doesn’t know it.
I thought Esmay was an early character when they were cleaning up the parks and the girls started their taxi business.
Different Esmay.
That Esmay was on TGW-138..
