Don’t know if you’re aware of it but with the exception of domesticated cats felines are not only carnivores but obligate carnivores. Housecats are the only felines which can digest plant based food.
I never had the urge to feed one of our dogs (or one of our cats for that matter) onions. What is the result? I have had a couple of dogs which loved cheetoes and even the odd funion but never thought to see if our cat would eat an onion. The little calico we are raising now likes the cheddar cheese I sometimes accidentally drop when I’m making my breakfast tacos.
Onions contain a chemical that is (mildly) poisonous to both species. Probably won’t kill them, but will make them sick if they eat enough. One onion ring probably won’t hurt a dog visibly, but I wouldn’t feed one a whole side order. More problems are caused by people feeding them leftovers than intentionally feeding them onions. Google will tell you more.
And I’m not sure whether other felines can’t handle plant matter AT ALL — I’ve seen big cats reacting to catnip a lot like domestics do — but I do know they can’t do much, and that Domesticus is the MOST omnivorous species — and they can’t survive on a vegan diet. Even dogs don’t do well on one.
I remember reading a story about a young couple in California (natch) who tried to raise a kitten on a pure vegan diet. Damned near killed the poor thing! Fortunately for the kitten an alert vet realized something was wrong when they took “their baby” in for routine well kitten shots and checkup. When the two fervently devout vegans found out that their kitten HAD to have meat in its diet they gave it up because they could not bear to have icky meat in their pristine vegan household. IMS the vet found the kitten a nice, new, sane home and suggested the vegans get a rabbit or hamster or guinea pig or suchlike.
Anything in the “onion” family is not good for dogs or cats: onion, garlic, leeks, etc.
Ditto not good for dogs & cats: chocolate, grapes & raisins.
There may be a few other things, but I can’t think of them at the moment.
Lactose intolerance is more common in cats, but not all are. Most of ours aren’t. Catnip varies too. My daughter harvests some and brings it in, one cat devours it like he has weed munchies, one just lays in it looking like she’s in euphoria, the third sniffs, looks up like “Yeah, it’s a weed. So what?” and wanders off.

OT (somewhat): Saw a photo of a frozen food freezer in a grocery store at the height of the shortages resulting from the lockdown. The freezer was.essentially empty except for the section with all the “meatless meat” products. It was chock-a-block full. I’m pretty certain there’s a lesson in there somewhere. 😉

Onions cause anemia in cats, for one thing.
also cats are lactose intolerant.. so giving cream or milk to a cat will just make it sick.!
they dont have the enzymes to process the milk sugars…
