Was Edgar born with a scowl
or is he upset with Doc. Johnson?
    Marise is having fun.

Got my show-up time for my 2nd cataract surgery. Supposed to show
up tomorrow (Tuesday 8/22) morning 0900. Should be over by noon.
Looking forward to getting it over with. I plan to check in here
after we get back home after the procedure.

Please, and hang in there, in a few weeks it’ll all be a bad memory.
I’ve been living with these lens for going on 8 years, You’ll adapt
pretty quickly. at first your eyes won’t want to adjust to the changes
in the light, but that gets much better in a short time. Don’t stare
at a light bulb or anything the first few weeks.

Am I wrong, or am I getting a vibe that they DID have the kid, and
Edger just sold him to the CSA? Or was forced to, knowing that
    bunch of goat droppings…

As long as the stars don’t effect her like they did Miral, Marise has
the makings of a deep space pilot. It’s a good thing Kima is thinking
ahead, she’s going to have to get used to seeing many strange and
wonderful things and not so wonderful people out there. By meeting
Imperials, she’s getting to know the best government and it’s people,
in known space. Plus, it’ll help Taritha in the talks with the Prima
Alpha to have an outside endorsement.

I think the CSA is the deep south – Confederate States of America.
California is referenced in TGW-744 as the Peoples’ Democratic
Republic of California. And in 745 as the “Calis”.

Ooh, sneaky, PC. California, Missouri is the largest city in
Moniteau County. “Largest” being somewhat relative. They only
had 4,278 people in the 2010 census, so it’s not a huge locale.

Methinks someone is gonna be cranky with Doc Johnson.

        Good point, guess it’s time for a re-read again…
I have to agree, Edgar might not want them to
find the kid, since he’s so “valuable” to an
        impoverished area like this.

Depending on how much of the present-day “State of Missouri” is in
this “Missouri”, there could and should also be a Mexico, Missouri
and a Nevada, Missouri, that I know of. Has to do with real estate
chicanery in the 1800’s. I live in Oklahoma, but I was born and
raised in Missouri. I long to hear someone answer an undemonstrated
    claim with “Show me”.

I’m not so sure. I think Doc J is trying to point them right to him.
Told them he’s in California, and basically challenged them to
look at a map to see the town of California, Missouri.

Ah good point! I keep forgetting that some of the founders of towns in the
USA couldn’t come up with new names, so they “borrowed” from other states.
I drove passed the town of Atlanta many times and I live in Indiana.

Did you guys know that AIs lie? Well they
definitely generate text that is counterfactual.
Here’s an article on “Watts Up With That”

“AI” is a lie to begin with. There’s no intelligence there, just
software that searches the internet for text apparently related to
the topic, then cuts up the texts and merges the pieces. It’s bad
enough that AI’s like ChatGPT begin with a medium as full of BS
as the Internet, but you can’t tell the truth if you are incapable
of understanding the truth – and AI isn’t.

        August 22, 2023, 13:49 | # | Reply

Real AI is like a baby, and has to learn just like a human.
No we are not “there” yet despite everyone’s panic.
I’ve even ran an early AI program some years back, and
it still felt like I was reading from a script rather than
“talking” to it. Despite hours and hours of database entry
        AND “teaching” it.

      • Bill Mullins
        August 22, 2023, 15:21 | # | Reply

Okay, maybe they cannot “lie” per se but they can damned well generate
counterfactual statements. I’ve heard of lawyers submitting briefs
generated by AI which contain totally bogus legal citations.
The same with scholarly papers citing nonexistent papers.

I was just saying they do what they are programmed to do,
a lie implies free will and intent, AI isn’t that far yet. Part of
it is they still haven’t learned “fuzzy thinking,” it’s what allows
us to understand some with a strong accent, or very drunk,
or in my case, a speech impediment (no officer I’m not drunk)
I just talk like it 😛 ). Like everything else with AI, time and
people far smarter than most to figure out how to teach a
          machine to think like us.

Teaching an AI to lie and it kinda does it is on the same level
as a new parent going nuts over a baby saying “Mama” which
is cute until the cat screams! Then the baby walks up crying
because it got scratched while showing the the fur in it’s
            hands. True story…

Back home from the procedure. The eye seems to be doing okay for now. We
did have some excitement. The facility took a major power hit. Lost power
completely for several minutes. When the power went out something in the
MRI machine got upset and the fire alarms went off. We had to completely
evacuate the building until the FD could come and make sure there really
wasn’t a fire. They let us back in about 20 minutes after I was scheduled to
report. The surgical schedule got shifted back but ultimately everyone
received their procedure. Now the fun begins. We’ll see how well my eye does.

you do NOT turn off a MRI.! usually on battery backup. IF for whatever
reason you have to Quench (depower the magnets.) it is a long process.
the quick method calls the fire department,. because it involves
heating the coils (fire risk) by venting the cooling ‘liquid helium’.
(which looks like a major fire hazard)

      August 22, 2023, 23:57 | # | Reply

That’s odd, most places I’ve seen have a back-up generator
if they have a surgical center. Glad to hear you’re procedure
went well, I know how nerve-racking it can be. Just rest, use
the drops, and keep the lights down when you can. And keep
a damp washcloth handy, mine tended to crust up in the corners
      the first few days.

    • Bill Mullins
      August 23, 2023, 06:58 | # | Reply

Actually the building does have backup power – generators.. but they apparently do
not have some things on the equivalent of an uninterruptable lower supply. Even with
the backup it took a few seconds for the backup to engage. Plus only some circuits
are on the backup power. I don’t know what the issue with the MRI was only that one
of the Drs told me it was the source of the fire alarm. There was about a 5 minute
gap between the power flop and the fire alarm going off. No other details are available
that I can find. One reminder, it was at a FedGov facility and you know how
      wonderful those can be. 😉

fire alarm, would have been immediately, not five minutes without power.
no, they decided to quench the MRI, to keep power to other operations..

Sad but true, It takes a huge amount of effort to NOT face-plant this cocky,
smart-mouthed a-hole at the one my father goes to…
There is a lag between the back-up and the failure, and I’ll admit the MRIs
gobble power like my elder sister at an all-you-can-eat buffet. (half a damned
        cake!) Heh…

I’ll admit, I’d LOVE to fly one of those Toby’s, it’s the landings I’d

Tobies are the black parasite space fighters, they don’t normally land.
      Although they can when necessary.
The craft you see here are custom-built for the Pride, there
are only six in existence. These four and two spares/trainers
on Catia. They don’t really have a class name.
