My old CAR-15 could fire a 20 round magazine out of the window in 1 – 1.5 seconds.
I did fly some gunship missions with our local (Vinh Long) l Huey B-model gunship platoons.
839 was faster than the B-models so I had to be careful. The 48 rocket “Hogs” were there too.
The 7.62 miniguns and USAF 20 mm Gatlings just did a “Mooooo!” roar. Looked like tracer firehoses.
It was good to know there was someone covering my Six in the Daisy Chain.
The Cobras had not arrived in RVN at the time.
I feel a little kinship (and serious envy) with Miral and those kids . . .

huh.? my colt M-16 (not A1)(with Mattel stock) fires 20 rounds in five seconds.. (chrono graphed @5.26s). the GAU 19A (.50) fires @ 3000 rounds per min or 33 rounds a second,,. then the M61A (20mm) fires @ 6000 rounds per min or 100 rounds a second..
an useless info the M134 (GAU-17) (7.62) fires @ between 55 to a 100 rounds a second..( tho most keep at 55rps to not use all the ammo…)
if you cant tell.. am a bit of a gun nut,,.. IF you know where the M-134 is made, then you know where i live..
Nah – they would not let me fly the Tweets. I really hated their sound . . . . Not much ordnance either.
I did have a couple flights of them for airstrikes. They did not do well – but did way better then the two flights of Navy A-4s did.
Most of the time I had F-4s . F-100s and occasionally had some flights of A-1 Spads from Bien Thuy AFB/ Can Tho.
Usually the A-1s were a flight of four, USAF Advisor/Instructor and 3 VNAF ships.
They would orbit me, talk more about the target.
(USAF usually said “Where is it?, Then made on e pass to dump and gone back to 20,000 feet and gone.
The A-1s (D’s and E’s) I think, would stay with me till they had expended (usually 8 – 250# frags or nape or a mix and 20mm (IIRC). )
The Spad drivers liked to start their runs across my nose so I could watch the approach, the drop and pull up . . . usually aileron rolls off the targets.
Bunch of dadgummed cowboy show-offs . . They did have fun.
I could not afford to try rolls like that with the 7-shot pods on my shackle brackets. I was too fond of my wings.
FYI – my C.A.R. had a green stock and had a 5 digit (really early?) serial number. They preceded the M-16s of any model.
