Agree. Did NOT see that coming. Marriage?! Adoption?! Instant family?!
I would imagine that will take some time for the girls to wrap their
heads around (as well as the rest of us)
All I can say is MAZAL TOV!

Accents sometimes are funny like that. I’ve known people who lived
here for decades and spoke almost without any noticeable accent.
Unless under immediate heavy emotional stress or when talking to
their family.
But Mrs. Hikaru seems to be putting on an act for her customers,
no? She might be keeping it for her customers, then.
Both my grandparents were german immigrants after WW! my grandfather
was a boy when he did and spoke with a more southern accent while my
grandmother was a teen when she did and she still a thick german
accent even decades later it’s depends on age and whether or not they
care about it it took me years to figure out she wasn’t calling me a
“dumb goose” when I broke something LOL. I figured something was up
when my father “translated” it as such lol.
I always got a kick out of how Jumba in Lilo & Stitch spoke with a stereotypical
German scientist accent but it was Stitch who called everyone “stupid head”.
One reason is right there in the strip: to stall them as long as
possible. To buy time.
Delaying that conflict should almost certainly work in favor for
Empire and friends.
They’re new, still consolidating their forces, still building trust
and relationships with others among the outer worlds.
The core words are old, established, stagnant. And they
depend on trade that slowly is taken from them by the Empire.
Playing for time is my guess. This gives their ‘diplomatic’ mission
more time to organize things, though I still wonder about their end
goal.
But the thing is, when these Horned Ones report back, the Core Worlds
will know that it’s not just one system that is a problem, but an
Empire, that there is a chance that they are going to loose the
Fringe Worlds to exploit and also the capabilities (or at least some
of them) of this Empire.
And Catia is the most important system in the Wolf Empire right now,
because it will take the brunt of the first attack of the Core Worlds.
In the long run Earth is more important because having a hidden system
with such many resources of material and personal is invaluable, but
in the short run, the longer they can draw out the start of the war,
the better their chances.
Especially in light of the Core Worlds possible wormhole independent
FTL capabilities. Which needs to be verified, their allies notified
and their defenses adjusted.
First the Core would have to find it.
If they do have FTL travel, then they recorded Catia’s star map on the way in,
and will map it further on the way out. Spectroscopic matching will tell them
where Catia is in physical space. They don’t have Earth’s star map, and there
are none on any Imperial ships to be captured. Plus, attacking Earth would be
a violation of the treaty, since Earth is populated by humans. Even attacking
Catia is iffy, since it is a part of the Empire, but the Core controls the courts
which decide such things.
I just noticed what kind of fine, interesting diplomatic nightmare you’ve created here.
Catia is part of the Empire and the Emperor is a Terran …
That should imply that the Emperor and her forces on Earth are obliged to help if Catia
is under attack. Would this be a violation of the treaty? Not many on Earth even know
about this treaty, no one on Earth did sign it.
That is a thought. Catia is Catian, of course, but it is both part of the Empire
and has a sizeable human population (Terran and Lamian and at least a
smattering from the Southern Worlds.) So, if Catia is attacked and is
defended by Imperial forces of mixed species, who violated the treaty?
The Catians are considered modified humans as well so unless the human fleet does it it would be a treaty violation
since that would make it an “internal affiar” getting the mercs on the Catians side would help since they would
follow the treaty just to save themselves the problems it would cause them.
That is the main purpose of the Empire, to protect the kingdoms from external threat
and the people from an abusive kingdom. More on this will be coming up in later pages.
The core is already feeling the pinch it’s the whole reason the horned
ones showed up with the mercs; to throw the fear into the catians and
to force them to accept the core’s idea of trade which has backfired
although I wasn’t expecting foot massages lol.
Catains have taken out 3 sets of core sponsored actions this is
playing nice with these ships even if they had to kick the ever-lovin’
crap out of the main ship’s captain.
They try to stall them, probably just to buy some time.
The longer they can delay direct conflict with the core worlds,
the better (within reason of course)
The Empire is new, still busy consolidating, still building new
trade relations and friendships with other outer worlds.
The core systems are well established, stable to the point of
being stagnant.
They depend on one-sided-trade agreements that the Empire is
currently “stealing” away from them.
Best tactic for the Empire would probably be to buy as much time
as possible while expanding their influence among the other systems.
While the core systems should act swiftly and take harsh and decisive
actions to “discourage” anyone who now hopes they can get a better deal.
I had thought they might go there but then I thought: Naaaa…
Ah PC you did it again LOL but it does solve some problems for
all just say yes kids!
I suspected it was all part of the delaying tactic and the guy was
warned about pissing the catians off so yeah all fits nicely he was
the biggest troublemaker to their plans and now he’s stuck in bed
moaning and fearful after all it’s suppose to be a “friendly”
trade mission he’s hardly been friendly!
It is rare I’ll grant you most kids are more worried about their phones
/games than making that kind of effort when I was 11 a guy paid me $5
to swim out to where his $50 deep-water lure was caught (why someone
would use one in a lake I’ll never know) and a new job opened up to me
I dig worms and sold rescued lure etc…
to people going fishing from the marina near my home if I hadn’t gotten
lead poisoning and the marina hadn’t closed who knows.
>After which he’ll still have to round up his crews.
The crews may report back in without too much hassle, even after
such extended, and pleasant, R&R, but suspect some seeds have
been planted questioning Core policies.
Would be a shame, a real shame, if the Captain has anything like
the difficulties Bligh did when leaving Tahiti :}
Well they’ve already made friends with the merc captain would make sense as long as none of them
try anything stupid like raping a Catian but none of them are core humans so I doubt it. Tourism is a
great way to make anyone doubt the preconceived idea of the cats brought up by the humans as an
excuse to to do what the humans did to them. Plus how fast and well the Catians have progressed
since they won their freedom they aren’t the “stupid animals” as once believed. And gaining the trust
of many of the core peoples will help in gaining a seat on the council!
That change up slid right by me.
Good pitch

Will Mrs Hikaru lose her on-again-off-again Asian accent?
And…..BTW, what IS Carl’s last name?
I just re-read his starting story I might of missed it but I didn’t
see one Mr. Carl was the closest one
Behlen. Mentioned after the meeting with the King, when Carl brought
up a cleaning contract for the Behlen building.

I saw the adoption coming, but not the marriage
Same here I didn’t even consider that neither of them seemed to know
each other that well unless it’s just for conveyance.
The Catians are playing with the Horned Ones like mice…..to what end?
(besides broadly based intel)

Earth is an … interesting case.
There’s still plenty of non-Empire places left, aren’t they?
How will they react if there’s suddenly a fleet of core world troops in orbit?
First the Core would have to find it.

Well, this happened a lot quicker than I imagined. As for being too old
to adopt, Walker’s two older daughters were a wee bit older still.
