Hmmm.. ok that wasn’t expected that captain is a bit more mature
than I expected, or he’s just behaving around the sellers? I love
that simple and rarely heard of mention of “semper fi” ole boy
just got a clear message from the boys.
Ah and the mind games start, I love Taritha’s question, she’s no
dummy and is willing to play her part to the hilt! This is gonna be
gooooood…. (said with a deep south accent)
Got talked into bumper skiing, got so fast I
slid UNDER the car and was handing on by
my finger tips and had my left foot on the

butt, and legs. At least my beer was ok….
LOL!
Damn! Ya just got me misty eyed.

It was before that movie, damn my memory…
crud… it was a post Vietnam movie (not First
blood) a LT had collected a bunch of roughneck
guys to help rescue his father that was a POW.
I give up I can’t remember the title.
Could of been I remember one of the guy’s picks a fight with the LT
calling him a shaved tail louie and beat the crap out of him demanding
to know why he wanted to go back and rescue POWs unless he
wanted to score points blah blah… after the fight while the LT was
trying to get up the Sargent remarked it was his father he was looking
for and they all shut up and started to obey him out of respect.
That stuck with me for good reason.
I’m not sure I could look it up and watch it
Amazon wants $12 I’ll have to check other
services I guess. It was a late night watch
on TV I must of fallen asleep during it.
Randall Cobb does look like the guy that
beat the crap out of the LT.

As I understand it, the Major said it under his breath to let him know
that he recognizes him as someone who has had similar training and
has similar values.
Jackson confirms it by translating the formula and establishing that
they do have something in common.
To me it’s like a polite way for the Major to tell Jackson that he saw through
the disguise, but he’s not planing on telling on him.
It should be Troy, but the math only makes sense
if it is Avoirdupois.
Either our honored writer made a mistake, or
when society falls apart some things get lost.
If Bubba doesn’t know the difference, that’s OK.
Our guys come out ahead.
There are 12 Troy Oz. in a Troy Pound.
😉
just did the math.. IF they are using pounds not
troy.. then the Empire is getting almost a troy
pound (11.366oz) for free. o.0
unless,, everybody is using pounds…
I kinda doubt any of those guys were jewelers
so they might be talking actual oz not troy.
Besides it’s easier to understand if it’s layman’s
terms. I knew that troy oz/lbs was different but
not by how much until now.
I agree that using the common measurement is easier for most people
to understand, so I had assumed that, even though I knew precious
metals were measured in Troy ounces.
However, although eight sets at 8 oz each would be four lbs (meaning
8 oz of profit), that still means that each missile (9 per set)
would be just UNDER an oz each, not just OVER, as the dialogue says.
Whenever I see discussions of characters paying for something in
ounces of precious metals, I am reminded of a passage from H Beam
Piper’s “Gunpowder God” (also known as “Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen”).
One of the opposing Princes is trying to escape from a lost battle,
but is pinned down, with his bodyguards dying around him, and
furious opponents quite keen on taking his head.
He shouts out that his ransom is 20 thousand ounces of silver,
and they suddenly lose all interest in killing him…

(wait, hold my beer) 😉
It’s even more fun when “hold my beer” is followed by “and watch this!”.
Fun to watch, that is.
From a safe distance.
If there is a safe distance.
Heh, I did that once, never again….

Is it just me, or is the page number a bit off?
You are right, thanks. Corrected.
“Is t just me…” Snicker.
o.0 .. missed it, completely!
Two questions on the upper section.
Which said “And if I’m not mistaken, Semper Fi.”?
And, is that Troy ounces or Avoirdupois ounces?
Semper Fi = Marine Corps motto. Always Faithful!
gold is always measured in Troy.
well,, precious metals are measured in Troy.
1oz t = 1.097oz
I know what Semper Fi means (but thanks for
explaining if anyone else was unaware).
I just can’t tell whether the Major said the
first one under his breath, or if Jackson did.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t one
troy pound equal to one regular pound?
No, 1.097 X 12 = 13.164
“Knowledge is power.”
And Money!
Ah! Thanks for the correction!
Nope a troy is 12 ounces and a regular pound is 16.
nope not same.. 1 troy pound = 12 troy oz
ore,, .823 pounds = 13.166 oz Avoirdupois
it’s lighter,, but denser ,. so it ‘feels’ heavy
pound of gold vs pound of feathers
which is heavier.? feathers by about
2 an a half oz…
Did you guys know, that the US was
one of the first nations to sign the
