IRW: civilian contractors sued the US military and won. IE: during peace time and non conflict bases,
have to hire contractors for non MOS jobs.! so,,, a real incident, a sgt broke a key in a bunker.
as locksmith is not an MOS had to put up a security detail for the weekend. as the LS would charge
3 times as much, for a service call. monday the LS came and fixed it under a minute.! (back story –
first private guard, looked at lock, pulled out broken key, locked the door an said “now what.” the Lt.
said ” you will unlock that door, put the key back in.! and forget you did that. because the civilian
union will sue you for everything you have. for taking their job.!”
SO. letting civies do a military job, would set a precedent.!
So Kathy is asking the right questions.
In the US or other non-Socialist, non-Communist,
non-State Controlled economies,
the government does not use civilian activity to
pay for government. (They have this revenue stream
called “Taxes”, “Tariffs”, “Fees”).
The Imperial Navy having a monopoly on asteroid
rights sounds very much like China today.
Can’t believe the Left Coast, Tree Hugging,
Woke Berkeley grad is having to argue for an open
Market economy. But we live in strange times.
have a monopoly
The thing is, they are using the mining income to fund themselves,
the development, operation, and the processing is done entirely by
the Navy FOR the navy, earth still has it’s mines and such. Which is
what I wished ours did, rather than bleed the tax-payers for the
funds to function. Which is better, a corporation setting it’s own goals
and prices, or a military that sells at a fair price it’s surplus and the
new alloy’s that can only created in a micro-gravity environment?
None of those companies know how to mine asteroids, and in the
process of learning there will be loss of life. The navy has the
training and knowledge of how to do it. Why change so someone else
can do it? Who will more likely than not get greedy and charge far
more than the navy? For that matter, why fix something that isn’t broke?
Every form of government has some element that can be called “socialist”.
Doesn’t mean that the government as a whole is.
That’s as ridiculous a comparison as saying that Nazi Germany had a military,
so we’re “literally” Nazis, because we have a military.
You’re absolutely right. Even if your comparison does not work.
Every government can and usually does have some form of socialism
to it. After all, government is created for the common good.
To do this it builds and maintains roads; creates and enforces building codes:
regulates utilities; and imposes controls and limits on enterprises and industries
whose lust for never ending increases in power and profits leads them to harm
the common good(e.g., the affordable care act and the insurance industry).
At the end of the day, this is a fiction universe and story meant for entertainment.
(and a nmad good one at that) Thank you for that entertainment.
I think the idea of a self-supporting military is a great idea, aside from social
services, it is the single most expensive “thing” ANY government can do. If you
think about it, The Empire has gone from a tiny, if not advanced, kingdom to a
massive universe-spanning true Empire and it barely cost it’s people a dime.
In fact, it’s made most of it’s peoples at least middle class. I was quite happy
to learn that Teresa’s D’fly was going to make her live (barring accidents or
a very lucky shot) hundreds of years.
I think you’d have to go as far back as the Greeks or Romans to find a
“self-funded” military via trade and mining.
(Unless you count privateering).
I see two problems. First, are you using Navy recruits to do the mining?
(Hardly the recruiting poster job.)
Or are the Navy staff who are doing the mining, tacit civilians – that’s
their job. No combat. In any case, you’re still taking money out of the
civilian economy – ESPECIALLY if the Navy is selling “spare” to fund
other portions of its mission.
Second, and this may not be an issue in this universe, but government
officials, including the military, are subject to temptation. Civilian
competition is supposed to tamp down skimming, kick backs,
over charging and other fraud.
To be honest? I expect the AI’s would handle the actual mining, running
a miner in open space would run the risk of radiation exposure. With the
shear amount they could collect and process I’m sure there’s surplus except
when there’s a high risk of a war breaking out, like the 140 capital ships
Motha sent or like the current situation. without a good build-up for the
navy Big Red’s fleets would have been a serious problem. Also the military
holds many patents on alloys and process that company would have to
pay them for, while it would be income, not enough for the navy needs.
As far as the greed issue you mentioned, If you recall when Bil was
talking to Mavia and such, it was brought up that Mavia had found and
stopped a scam that some people were pulling on both Minka and the
military recording a higher cost than was needed to the military and
were pocketing the difference. I believe the guy’s sister was a military
account. That’s the biggest point, however, the Empire punishes anyone
caught skimming etc with VERY strict punishments. RL, that’s normal business.
(Cough cough core cough)
also Janice said “it would supply jobs”.. yes.!
at the cost of the jobs of the ones already there.!!
then there would be the “Supply line” SNAFU,. IE: the existing line
already has the who gets what as needed… the new line DON’T care,
as they are driven by profit, not need.!
and the Military would have to get a budget.!! to buy said metal.
and now it would have to BID on said metal…
and wait IF theirs was not the highest bid..
I’m sure that some of the operation employs Civvies as well,
so they would lose their jobs or at least be laid off while the
the “restructuring” goes on, the entire idea would stall any
defense plans and starve everyone while the new people
figure things out. It’s just dumb, pointless greed. This would
be a major change that can NOT be rushed due to the safety
issues.
“Can things get any worse?”
No need to ask. You’re about
to find out. The hard way.
The GOOD AND HARD way.
Seems like you DID allow
your alligator mouth to
overload your hummingbird
ass.
HAHAHAhAha (wheeze choke cough) heheheh…
Empire’s gonna give it to ya! Aw, you forgot the penetration lube…
That’s ok, it won’t matter once the discharge happens, damn,
my guts hurt now.
Aside from the fact that it’ll trash the military’s ability to generate funds,
with such a hostile attempt, I doubt many would want to deal with them,
more so if they hike the prices right off the bat. Plus, how are they
going to run the business if the military keeps all the assets?
Without the grav tech,
it’ll be crazy expensive to send conventional ships up and down.
Or the fact that the entire treaty system and memberships are
handled by the local governments, are they going to travel
every member and friendly to demand access to any orbiting
resources? I’m sure the navy could just move to any system
and setup shop away from Terra.
I hope it’s true. Let me give you an example of “The moment of threat” abuse.
When I was a child, I had a Boston Terrier that I loved. A neighbor kid would come by
and torment my dog, poking it with sticks or throwing rocks at it until it finally bit him.
The police took my dog away and had it killed. They didn’t care about anything that led
up to it, just the “moment of threat”.
Now imagine a bad cop provoking a normal citizen until he reacts. Pushing him on the
shoulder, cursing at him, verbally threatening him. Then he shoots the citizen, justifying
it by “moment of threat”, ignoring his actions that led up to it.
Under the old rule, the courts would accept that. Under the new rule, they can’t.
…
My brother and I dealt with the kid later, very quietly. But my dog stayed dead.
I watched it twice,I don’t see any down-side to it. We had that happen
twice ourselves, the first dog I had to send the beagle back to the shelter,
I was the only one that could get close to him. The other dog bit someone
who he knew but was so worked up by time the poor girl came over he
grabbed her arm and then recognized her. After that we only had indoor cats.
most bullies use that! provoke you till you strike back.
and when you do, you started it.!
not me,. supervisor, had 3 dogs in a 6 foot high fenced yard.
neighbor kid poked a hole in fence to poke / annoy dogs.
dogs got his arm (badly mauled,. 13 stiches) one day…
they still put down the dogs…
We almost had to put down the second dog, but my sister
found a warehouse that wanted a mean dog for a guard…
He was a very friendly golden too 🙁 That event is partly
why we moved away from that area.
A peripheral search indicates it’s true and correctly interpreted.
Including the caveat that an arms bearer must remember HIS
part of the “totality of the circumstances” must be considered too.
I see this as furthering Justice for all concerned. Hence 9-0 decision.
That’s one of the reasons I like it, it forces accountability on both sides.
Too often civvies start something and cry “foul!” as well as cops feeling
they ARE the law go too far too fast for everyone’s good. I think it
should be added that if at any time a cop claims his body cam
malfunctions it should be looked into ASAP, rather than brushed under
the rug, or just “I forgot it was off.” Yeah ok right… Sorry, I have a
bone to pick with dirty cops.
body cam off… see there is the problem ,, plausible deniability.!
it can be turned off.!!
it should be. ‘It is on (24/7) when you are on duty.’
and not blocked.. (“oh, my arm was covering it”,, or
“I was turned at an angle.” or “the battery died.”)
IT is a safety feature, like your vest,. use it as one.!!
Those cams use the same tech as the dash cams,
whatever size of SD card they have does have a
limit, so they do a “rolling” save feature, old video
is over-written. So the cards in body cams should
be in the Tb size and replaced. I’d say if ANYTHING
happens to the body cams that doesn’t have picture
or sound during a situation would be suspect and
the cop’s testimony be thrown out. I know that cops
watch out for each other, but when you cover-up
a dirty cop, you’re breaking the law as well.
they have 15 hour body cams with Wifi.! and 20 hours of memory…
so no need to over wright… and like radios or flashlights.
they can be charged and downloaded when off duty…
and they cost less than most vests, and about the same as a
encrypted radio. the problem is they are allowed to turn em off.!
edit
IF they have nothing to hide.. then it would be no problem..
j. q. Public recording with phone.. “make sure you get my good side.”
Kathy is on a tear.
I don’t want to know how you
came up with the name for P.E.N.I.S.
Damn good thinking.
Thank-you
an the grunts call it the pegger.
as we are coming thru the back door.!
And they didn’t have the lube, that’s gonna sting…

ROFLMAO
The government owning (or regulating) the means of production for
the benefit of the of the citizens is literally the definition of Socialism.
Every form of government has some element that can be called “socialist”.
Doesn’t mean that the government as a whole is.
That’s as ridiculous a comparison as saying that Nazi Germany had a military,

Will be curious how this circle gets squared.

Is that Phil with Kathy?
i would say no… that looks like the shop owner…
possibly one who represents the general populace.
Harold, he owns Lupine Motors and employs
both Cherry (Machinist) and Cissy (Sales).
He has something to add to the conversation.
No, that looks like Prince William of Romania. (See episode 271)
you are correct… 🙂
Why is he there? Kathy is married to Phil or was.
Moral support or part of the mining efforts?
He’s a concerned business owner who would also
be effected by this attempt to take over mining.
As I said, “looks like”. PC says it’s Harold, owner of Lupine Motors.
🙂 i was agreeing… he does look like.
I thought it was King, stepping out of the shadows,
if only momentarily, and we’d find out why.
