Ahh! So, Albrecht was their original name as well, but they changed
theirs first, when they went to work for Matthew. Well, that answers
    my question from yesterday.

Ah, the FTL question continues peeking in and ducking back again.
Do they, or don’t they, have FTL capabilities?

Hi all, I am finally back, and just as the hot war is about to begin!
Fried computer led to buying a new one but as is was running windows
7 (and it was many years old then) and I was wanting to get into both
Astrophotography and a few graphic intensive games/simulations such
as a decent flight simulator I looked at buying a new one. However
couldn’t find one within my budget – until I found a place that built
custom computers. You select the components, they make sure the
parts are compatible, assemble it, and ship the completed computer to
you Unfortunately the only graphics card that met all my requirements
and was within budget was out of stock. I had to wait (seemingly)
forever for it to come in; but I now have it, it is working,
and I have caught up with the comic.

Welcome back, I’m sure PC will be pleased to see you!
I hear that about parts, after weeks of hunting, I gave
up and bought a custom gaming system, pricey, but little
      wait time.

And while I was waiting for the computer to arrive I was in hospital
(for a week) between Christmas and New Year having my left knee
    replaced. Still a bit painful and will remain so for some time;
but that is to be expected.

My wife had her hip replaced last year, she’s still a bit tender.
She’s still using a rolling walker, but that has to do with other
issues too. Everyone I’ve talked to that’s had it done says the
same thing: You’ll hardly notice in time, except when it’s
      raining maybe…

Okay, it’s official. The Core has FTL tech that allows travel between
systems without going through a WHJ. The good part is the Empire does
not have to know the details of the technology to plan a defense.
I suspect Empire strategists are already planning for it. There have
been hints in the past. I’m no military planner but I suspect there
are ways to maximize warning time. Could that tech be related to that
ringship model on our Pteran Captain’s desk? I would be surprised if
the Pterans weren’t familiar with whatever the Core worlders are
cooking up. WOW! The Core Worlders must REALLY want to smack
the Empire down BAD! They are notoriously tight fisted when it
comes to spacecraft. Unfortunately for the Core forces the Empire is
much more familiar with their (The Core) weapons and tactical doctrine
than vice versa. It still bodes to get “lively”.

I think the Imperial PTB have been working on plans to deal the likelihood
of an FTL attack since the events on Catia. A lot depends on how close to
the system it can bring them to, If it’s hyperspace, it won’t matter, but any
thing else (Warp drive, WH jump gates) would be effected by any gas
giants, number of planets in the system, and the over-all mass of the
sun. Either way, a series of automated mass detectors on small, stealthy
drones should give a heads-up if anything bigger than a scout was to
enter the system outside of the gates. Areas to watch as well is above
and below the plane of the planets orbits, there is where the least
amount of system traffic would be. I doubt they have spent the time OR
money on upgrading the weapon systems on any ships, since they are
mainly pulling out the drives and installing them on current war ships.

Support for these “new” ships will be a high priority, I doubt they carry
enough fuel for a return trip, so capturing one is a strong maybe? The
final nail in the core’s coffin would be if the Empire got THAT tech…
And give PC a crap-ton of new plot lines as well! 😉
Who knows what’s out there, outside of the gate’s system…

Remember how they already felt the sting of one freighter missing?
The one the Pride captured? We saw it again when one of the fringe
worlds opted out, the one that needs Cofeve to live longer?
One way the Core Worlds stayed in power by keeping things sparse.

While we don’t know how far the trade war has come along, but
going by the Core’s Reaction, it looks like the Empire has already
cut the fringe off with their control of Catia and Dogushan. So the
resources they depend on might already dry up.

As for defenses, you don’t need many ships to defend a star system.
Enough remote-controlled missile pods will do. Although the Empire
does have AI robots, so a cluster of pods could be controlled by a
one AI ship looking like some small asteroids or debris until they fire.

Coming back to the sparsity the Core Worlds work with and what
we just learned, this looks like an all-out attack with no reserves
being held back. If that is true and this attack fails, the war is over
      for all intends and purposes.
In that case it is likely that the Empire captures at the very least one
of these non-Wormhole FTL drives, because there will be quite a few
that will try to surrender. No way the Core World’s crews are well
      trained and motivated.,

      We will see 🙂

Both the P’tero and the Hammer’s governments have agreed to be neutral, as
well as 7 of the fringe world, another 8 have joined the Empire. Plus, the
Pride’s mixed crew is known to the core, so the deal is done. The only hope
the core has now is to wipe out the Empire’s hold and force the survivors to
        join them.
Yeah, right… Good luck with that…
The non-neutral members are desperate, as are the companies, I have no
doubt they will throw everything at Catia in an attempt to take them out and
find the location of Earth to end the Empire’s “threat” once and for all. What
will happen is both sides will suffer heavy losses, the core will lose control
over the counsel, and the Empire will gain that control. The endgame should be
that once the counsel is no longer controlled, it forces them to invoke the
treaty, and those responsible either surrender, or face the fact that everyone
else will attack them in their depleted state.

As I suspected. And we had hints a few years back.
So the Empire suspects something, but will they be ready?

http://thegentlewolf.net/comic/tgw-952/ Through tgw-960 says it all,
and enough time has past to not only train and man more ships and
upgrade P’teran ships to Imperial standards. I think we can safely
assume they have at least a good head start. Will it be enough?
      Only PC knows…
Plus, we have no idea what’s Palas and the friendly races have been
up to on Xanadu, I doubt they have been playing mumblypeg or
      clubbing this entire time 😉
(mumbly-peg = a game street kids play with knives thrown at the feet)

Where I grew up, Mubley-peg (various spellings), was where you took
turns setting the tip of the knife on a body part (first on your thumb,
then your index finger, etc., up to your wrist, elbow, shoulder, chin,
(usually not the nose, depending on the sharpness of the point of the
blade) and finally the forehead. You had to stick it in the ground
with at least one full revolution to move on. Continue until you missed.
If you missed it was the other person’s turn.

The game where you were throwing to stick the knife between the
opponent’s feet was called Chicken. If it stuck between imaginary
lines in front of the toes and behind the heels, the opponent moved
the closer foot over next to the knife, pulled the knife from the ground
and took their turn. I played it once against my ex-scoutmaster
(yeah, we were dumb and dumber, as we were way back in the
boonies on a 50-mile hike). We were using a pointy pocketknife,
but in our defense it was a small knife, we weren’t throwing hard
and we were wearing boots, so there was little risk of actually
getting hurt (relatively speaking). He’s the only person I’ve ever
seen who absolutely would not chicken. I got him down to where both
heels and both toes of his boots were touching, and with about a 3/8″
slot between insteps I nailed the throw. He didn’t “lose”,
and I didn’t win, but the game was over.

I had a couple of proper throwing knives, so no one would challenge me 😉
I heard it by both names so I wasn’t sure which was right. I had a buddy who
had made a a double bladed stiletto that he made out of a heavy saw blade,
he would practice with it often on his own feet UNTIL he messed up and
stuck in the side of his leg… 12 stitches and an interesting conversation with
a cop lost him both the knife and his pride… (looking down, shaking head)
          He wasn’t the brightest bulb…

Sam called it, and I had to agree, it’d be too much of a coincidence
otherwise. Poor Julie, her shocked look is going to be tired after
today! I had a hunch the twins were his daughters, they have his
    eyes…

Ah, the benefits of having a nosy youngster, no doubt she over-
heard that tidbit. Someone gloating about the surprise the Catians
were about to get no doubt. (Pssst! they suspected it long ago
before anyone decided to do it!) I just hope the Empire can get
that tech, the mind boggles at the prospect!

    >we notice when something changes

A good way to avoid feeling overwhelmed.
Though still need periodic detailed checks to catch trends,
and the Green-Yellow-Red spans to be an appropriate size.
Some alarms need to be on speed of change,
not just size of change, as well.

Is Neela a member of the Street Spiders mentioned in TGW – 1200
and is it a possible Stilyagi like group?
That would explain her paying attention to overheard conversations.

Hey, George, good to hear from you!
The Street Spyders are like the Stilyagi, but not as formal.
They just keep their eyes and ears open for their benefactor,
the club owner who looks after them.

I have been a little off my game lately. I am just getting over my
yearly bout with chronic bronchitis and the medicine required to
keep it from becoming pneumonia. I am surprised I got 3 of the 5
letters that are in her name. I probably typed the name of a
character from an anime or some book from years ago.
