Now the REAL game has started!
(cue space invaders sound effects) Gad’s the

    but fitting I think!

Whoops! I did warn her about that,
ah well no harm done this time…
    That’s an interesting take on

Yes. That makes sense. And for some reason reminds

I’ve read quite a few books over the years, but I don’t
think I’ve read that one. I’ll have to look it up. I don’t
have a kindle, I’m sure I can find something that’ll work.

I have to admit PC, I’ve read enough stories but I think your take
on gravity is the most realistic I’ve read yet. I’ve “seen” grav beams,
but not weapons (even though it makes sense) mostly anti-grav.
Never do I remember it being used for comm. So you’ve managed
to take it to a logical direction with out using a crap-ton of
    techno-babble!
(“Carter! Enough with the head-tilt, just make it happen!”)
(mumbling “shocked you’ve never broke you own neck woman!”)
“What was that?” “Oh nothing you go do… what you do…”
O’Neil never did like it as well heh.

There are several writers that have came up with plot points
in so many stories that use gravity/time/light manipulation
in advance tech. However so many of them used techno-babble
to explain it. PC has and will be using a more realistic approach
rather than using made-up words to explain things.

Sorry, PC, but IRL lightspeed really is the universal speed limit.
They have even proved that gravity propagates at lightspeed
    to the limits of measurement.
Apparently the earth doesn’t orbit the sun. It orbits where the
    sun was 8.3 minutes ago.

You mean that the theory about planet-movements if
the sun should instantly disappear is false, Bill?
So the planets etc. would actually continue in a curved
trajectory until they ‘discovered’ the sun had gone awol
and not go straight the moment it happened?
Interesting, but a bit hard to prove –
none I know of has a switch to cut out gravity,
      … even for small areas.

I’m not much into technical explanations. Remember, the Empire’s mass detectors
are an offshoot of gravity amplification tech. So figure that with a grav detector on
one end of the com path and a drive on the other, they each distort space in their
immediate vicinity in a planned way so that they “touch” in warped space.
An observer might see the other ship with a, say, two minute delay, but as far as
the com nodes are concerned, they’re right next door.
The lab weenies are trying to use the principle to create an effective FTL drive,
      but without any luck.
Think of it as two men inside of two rubber balloons that are touching. They can
pass sounds (vibrations) to each other, but they can’t trade places.
I first came up with the gravity drive concept in Junior High School, when our
“Science” teacher told us that anti-gravity had been proven to be impossible.
I asked him if it was possible to amplify gravity, and he didn’t know.
      He “assumed” it was…
That started a whole cascade of ideas in my head that eventually ended up
      in the story here.
And with me in the principle’s office, asking “Well, why not?” rather fruitlessly.
Standing on a chair screaming that “‘BECAUSE I SAID SO’ ISN’T PROOF!”
Which led me to the three rules of surviving childhood:
      1) Adults are too proud to say “I don’t know”
      2) They’re too cowardly to admit that they might be wrong.
      3) And they’re too stupid to figure it out when they are.
      4) Whatever. Don’t question authority.

PC, there are so many things in our lives that came from a simple idea,
TOS gave us cell phone for example. An idea is just that, and if an idea
inspires someone with more degrees than I have socks, and they create
your idea, then you helped someone make your dream come true!

I should add I’ve been there, my algebra I teacher insisted I was

          I used to enjoy calculus.
My High school Physics teacher started the year by chalking an equation on the board,
as he asked for the first to have the answer to raise their hand. In under 20 seconds after
checking it twice, I raised my hand. Upon prompt I gave the answer. He came over and
said it was wrong. I said that it was right. I had answered his question. He demanded that
he was correct. The year ended right then and there the joy I had in physics was diminished as
I had to continue the rest of the semester there. That neuter of a religious(?) Brother continued.
as a negative useless sexual nonbeing spreading his lack of joy and attempts to crush people’s spirit.
My visualizations that I used to answer and consider such concepts was damaged in his continual
          attacks during that semester.
He(?) was another teacher I was obviously smarter than. I would have rather had discussions of the
concepts rather that sticking to an unthinking protocol. He was a science destroying science teacher.
Many have been subject to such disgusting teacher behavior, as comments here point out. People
here discus concepts using these pages better than that fool ever did or likely could.
His meaningless ‘authority’ was all that he had.

That theory describes the orbits ignoring the idea of relative movement.
the entire solar system is orbiting the galaxy yes, and from that viewpoint
it would look like the planets are chasing the sun in a spiral. but from our
sun they are moving in a circle.
From the viewpoint of an ant, the universe is a huge, broad forest of
greens and browns, inhabited by huge, hungry creatures that only want
to eat you and your kind. It’s all relative. Light speed can be mathematically
proven, but engineers “proved” by math that the human body couldn’t
survive going over the “natural” speed limit of 30 miles an hour without
dying. Until someone did it and didn’t implode.
Then it was the sound barrier, and so on. We can’t know the actual facts
until it’s attempted is all I’m saying, math helps, but it isn’t true facts until
there is solid proof that any limit IS a limit. Einstein used math to “prove”
his theory, and that’s all it is, a theory. Sure the math checks out, so did
the math for the other two things I mentioned “Oops! I guess we were wrong”

        That’s a common misunderstanding.
A hypothesis is an idea that needs to be proven.
A theory in science is something that has been proven by observations.
Einstein’s theory has been proven a lot of times in many ways.
Various experiments have shown that no matter
or energy can travel faster than light.
But we know that _space_ itself has no speed limit,
as well as some phenomenon’s (like wave patterns).
We know that entangled particles somehow “communicate” faster than light,
but there’s no way to use that to transfer information. At least yet.

          September 16, 2023, 17:36 | # | Reply

Not quite, you’re thinking of a proof, not theory. A proof is when a theory
is shown to be true through observation and repeated successful tests.
Even Einstein said that his theory wasn’t complete, that it was missing
something. He died while he was still working on the theory that’s been
accepted as a proof because how could we test it? Yes light does move
at the known speed, it’s been tested to death in the last 90+ years. We
just don’t have the tech to actually try to move anything anywhere near
the speed of light much less past it. Now the colliders has made a
particle move near that speed, but they have said that they think they
have created tachyons by crashing 2 moving at near the speed of light
into each other, but they can’t really prove it since they only last a
          nano-second.

I should add that if you think about it, how would we detect something
moving beyond the speed when everything we know is based on light
speed. Dark matter/energy is the best example of what I mean, we can
see the results of it, but not it, itself. Just like tachyons, how do you
detect something that is moving faster than light, much less thought.

I remember that one. It was about passenger trains and predictions
of disaster as they got faster.
And then people boarded the trains and didn’t even notice, because
their environment was moving right along with them.

          September 17, 2023, 00:36 | # | Reply

Yeah I remember that as well, something like 60 mph was the “safe”
limit on trains. All it took was the right engineers to step out of the
box and redesign from scratch with the idea that it WASN’T a limit,
just a weak design. Lesson learned? Not by enough people, but it
          was a start…

If there are wormholes in this universe, there might as well
be FTL communication and other means of transportation.
In _our_ universe gravity travels with the speed of light.

I try to stick with a world that at least is internally consistent.
In this particular instance, gravity is not moving faster than light.
It is shortening the distance it has to travel.
If I stuck with current knowledge, there would be no gravity drives,
plasma drives, beam weapons or dragonflies, and the Empire would
        be limited to Earth.
I am not trying to build a real world here, I am trying to build an
internally consistant one. Like every science fiction author ever.

If you took today’s tech back in time just 40 years, people would panic.
Cell phones smarter than any computer on the planet and fits in a pocket?
TV’s 6″ thick full color and stereo sound? Internet that doesn’t need a
        phone line?
PC is taking a situation that can very well happen and using it to not only
improve on human life, but do it from today’s standards. Not 5000 years
in the future, or in a fantasy world where magic is as common as chili farts.
(sorry couldn’t pass that up) All he’s done is take a single discovery, and
follow to a logical direction. Think about the discovery of radio, that one
seemly simple discovery has changed our world in so many ways! Why not
discovering what gravity is and how to replicate it?

        • Chryzopraz
          September 21, 2023, 04:34 | # | Reply

AFAIK the best current understanding is that gravity is not a force (like all other known forces, electromagnetic, strong, weak, etc),
but an emergent phenomenon we perceive from spacetime topology. If that turns out to be true, a gravity drive or weapons simply wouldn’t be possible.
But if we could learn how to manipulate spacetime, then possibilities are endless…
Unfortunately we don’t really understand much there.

That was my only point. Some here will recall I have been lobbying

(layman’s) grasp of gravity but I still come here for the stories.

Just do what Dr. Who has done SO many times in the shows
Just reverse the polarity on the (insert techno-babble) and
          it’s working! HEH!
I’m sure it could be done, they just don’t have the knowledge
yet on how to do it. Gotta save something for latter plot lines!
😛 Honestly though, what PC has done is show that the scientist
had done was to simulate gravity, not really create it without
mass. In order for anyone to actually create anti-grav, you’d
have to match the exact wave form that gravity has, and
reverse it. Like noise canceling headphones do with sound.

Sad but true, and China doesn’t spend money on research either,
they just steal, oh sorry, reverse engineer everything other

stone age due to an test done on a universe(?) modifying device
where electron stopped moving along a conductor, pretty much
stopped every bit of tech world-wide in an instant.
You couldn’t approach the lab to try and shut it down because the
output effected humans on the cellular level as you came closer
to it. Bone became brittle, even the brain function stopped. The
story ended when the MC was found and brought to a place as far
away from that lab as possible where universe was almost normal.

It’s all shock news AKA clickbait. On Facebook some years back I seen

cigarettes. I noticed many things wrong with the picture, the “damaged”
areas were straight lines, no illness does that, ever. It spreads like
fingers reaching out. There was a few other things but what jumped out
to me first was when you looked at the top of the lungs the trachea
was attached to BOTH lungs, now how the hell can one lung only inhale
cigarette smoke and the other only pot smoke? It was a pair from the

You can bet your ass China will do their damnedest to keep from damaging

For decades now China hasn’t really contributed to ANYTHING that
required effort other than to “borrow” tech from other people’s
work. Take Harbor freight, they sell some rather cheap motors that
bare an uncanny likeness to the Honda motors at half the costs.
My son bought one for our feed grinder, it is IDENTICAL to the same
motor from Honda! Right down to the parts and even the bolt patterns!
Wanna guess who makes them? China. A few years ago China
introduced a new car they are making for international sale, please
ignore the fact it is identical to the American Ford Focus….
With only a few minor changes of course…
I could go on but you get the idea, I’m sure that’s why PC had that
story arc with the Chinese coming to Jerico to “buy” (steal) the
          grav tech.

        • Petercat
          September 17, 2023, 15:46 | # | Reply

They may not have that choice. The CEO of TSMC has already stated that
if it looks like China will take Taiwan, he will make certain that there is
nothing left that will be useful.
In addition, the staff will be evacuated at the first sign of an attack. So
there will be no one on the island who knows how to use the equipment,
which takes special training and knowledge.
So even if China does get the machinery intact, they won’t be able to
          maintain or use it.
And you bet it needs a lot of maintenance, as precise as it is.
