About 6 months ago I had an idea for what i considered to be slightly deranged,
where the Villain from TGW-614 steals one of Teresa’s eggs from the Navy (TGW –
    628) and has his Advisor impregnated as a surrogate with him as father, hoping
to have a daughter that looked like Teresa’s mother, but as his advisor warned
back then it would not turn out as he expected. Now I have to wonder if me and
The Cat are both slightly deranged to have possibly similar ideas because this
would be a good explanation for the mental link.

It’s more likely a distant relative of the Chinn’s, born with a dragon spirit
that woke at a bad time in everyone’s lives. The region’s leaders found out
and conscripted him into service for them. Dragons and those with their
spirit are telepathic/empathic, and since Teresa’s was augmented in
http://thegentlewolf.net/kathy-meets-kajm-004/ she was able to sense
      him from a distance.

“Have they worked with us before?”

    Definitely a newbie.

    Slight understatement, methinks.

Not a newbie, he was wondering if the pilots were.
      Also:

I always did love that comment about superman, I watched
the original bl/w TV series when I was a boy, even then I
wondered how he was so great when nothing could hurt him!
Only reason they created the kryptonite was he was TOO op.
They kept making rays to hurt him, when a shot gun shell
loaded with it would of killed him outright! BIG plot-hole!

So, Miral is no longer pregnant. Let’s hope the pregnancy was successful.
And I assume that Cats function internally like humans, not cats, and
multiple births are not unheard of but rare.

PC had that pin-up of a VERY pregnant Miral and Joshi on patreon,
That was months ago in real time, so I’m sure it’s over and most
likely if anything had gone wrong, they would of done a c-section.
Hell our first born was 9 lbs, 2.5 oz and my wife was 99lbs, that
boy was 10% of her total body weight!

Miral is so tiny that the surgeons
        did a C-section by default.
I do need to address that, don’t I?

I think you’ve covered the troublesome details

It is a pretty much a done deal, most Cat ladies would need
one as well, with the death rate and all. A c-section isn’t fun
for a woman, it is major surgery after all. As tiny as they are,
natural birth would be shear torture for days on end, so it’s
understandable if they rarely have kids, if for no other reason.

All three of mine were C-sect for the same reason. Well, the
middle one for this reason only. The first added breech position
and toxemia, the last one full-blown eclampsia at six months.

I feel for both of you, my wife went naturally, but not a year after
my youngest, she had “lady problems” as she calls it, 6 months of
anti-hormone shots and had 3 surgeries. Between the scaring
inside and the hysterectomy, it was 2 years of hell for us both.

          “Oops!” (giggles)

My wife did that to me once, we were having car
trouble, so I asked her to help me, my timing
strobe was busted, so I took a spark plug and
was sticking into a spark wire when I told her
“When I say, turn over the motor” to which she
turn the key right then. The spark ran up my arm,
and came out where my belly was touching the
fender! Sigh.. well at least I knew we had spark!
Damn near pissed myself on the spot.

ok.. how bout this..? the core has been doing this for over 500 years,.
and no real problems.. (i mean the Dogishauns put the royal kids on
ships..) so,. the core has perfected ‘rad shielding’, but it is bulky,.
the Empire now has a 3 tier shield (used ta be 2),, the older ships (not
refitted,, yet.) have the ‘snip an shield'(plating),. the new ships have
“improved core shielding” (like, transparent aluminum),. aligned crystal
poly plaiting,. and then add a gyroscopic magnetic bubble (simulates
earths magnetosphere) when the rads exceed a certain tolerance..

With all the industry in the area they are going to,
there will be no doubt they will come up against
    some heavy resistance at first.
I just hope they can get to him in time to save him!

A short trip in low orbit shouldn’t have a negative effect
on Marise’s eggs, I’m sure at some point she
and Kima will want to try to have kids!
Both Shiva and Esmay are great pilots, both deep space
    and atmosphere, she’ll be fine.

Mostly the restrictions are for people that spend a lot of time in space,
or who might have to go EVA.
Passenger ships are safe, they’re heavily shielded, and have a core
shelter in case of severe solar storms.
But all that shielding adds weight which a warship designer doesn’t
      want, so warships carry less.
Readers, come up with some ideas for shielding, please.

Ideas for shielding against cosmic radiation?

One idea I read a few times before using water (like having
the H2O reserve of your craft as a liquid shield around the
parts of the ship where the crew spends most of their time.

Magnetic shielding should go a long way to divert or reflect
most of the particles. That’s a major part of how good ole
Earth does it. But you’d need something huge and strong.

According to an article about how to protect astronauts on a trip
to Mars that I just read you’d need about 30g Aluminum per cm² as
protection. (Since Aluminum is around 2.7 g/cm³ that translates
        to about 4-5″ for shielding)

But there seems to be a catch with just relying on a material shield:
secondary radiation. (Some parts of the cosmic radiation, especially
those not from the closest star next to your craft are massive and
carry a lot of kinetic energy – if those hit something they can
generate cascades of lighter and slower particles).

My best bet would be a combination:
First strong magnetic shielding (maybe not while in stealth
mode) around the vessel for dealing with most of the problem.

Inside of that either a not-to-thick hull to catch most of the
remaining stuff while not generating too much secondary fall out.
Or you go for several layers of different metals combined with
maybe something like water, to try and eliminate dangerous levels
        of secondary radiation too.

Cosmic rays are so small they pretty much pass through
almost anything, 1000 of them passed through me
          while I was typing this.
That is part of the reason most astronauts were older,
          many already had older children.
Neutrons are even worse, NOTHING stops them, they are
a common output of a fusion reaction, like the Sun.
Both the planet’s atmosphere and magnetosphere,
          greatly reduce our exposure.
When you leave it, the amount jumps 10,000 times.
Neutrons are so small they rarely strike anything,
but in open space there is so many that it can
          happen a lot more often.

Your talking about the holy grail of metallurgy, an alloy
far denser than lead or depleted uranium, but lighter
than titanium or chrome molly. Plus if it acted like a
superconductor, a small magnetic field over the surface
might deflect some of the c-rays or neutrons.
I wonder what could be found in a new (in galactic terms)
system forming, that new elements could be discovered.
After all, steel was discovered when someone accidentally
added coal to iron in the forge rather than in the fire pot…

You’re right. Pre-Empire, everyone went for the most massive ships that
could fit through a wormhole. Heavy armor, lots of weapons, huge engines
with low endurance (fuel capacity, mostly) and low speed.
The Empire uses speed and maneuverability as armor, using the longer
range of the main weapon to stay out of reach.
The downside is that if an Imperial ship is taken by surprise, it’s in
trouble. Their smaller ships can’t take as many hits as a dreadnought.
So the fleet is not defensive, it is pretty much intended to be used
          aggressively.

Hit and fade, or all out and run, that can be far more damaging
than sitting still, whacking away at each other until someone
gets lucky, is never a good tactic. Take boxing, not MMA, 2 big guys
keep throwing punches until one or the other either gets tired or
manages to land a few good hits in the right spots. Then watch,
oh say, a samurai fight, where they size each other up while
holding a fight stance, then they rush at each other hoping to
land a killing blow, rinse and repeat, until one of them is dead
or bleeding out. In most cases, the better, faster one is the
            winner after only one charge.
Comparing the core’s fighting style and the Empire’s is the same
idea, they send out Mike Tyson in full boxing gear, The empire
sends out a Samurai in battle gear, who do you think will win?

I don’t recall where but I read that polyethylene would provide a good
bit of shielding. Something about its structure would slow down the
particles. And it would not have to be all that thick either. I wish I
could remember where I read that. But cosmic ray shielding seems to be
more a function of molecular structure than absolute density. Although
polyethylene can be fairly dense, just not as dense/heavy per unit
        volume as lead.

We used polyurethane powder mixed with 5% phenol to make a very hard
almost glass-like material that was a pain to clean out (jackhammer pain)
if it got wet in the hopper, phenol reacts to both heat and water, causing
it to cure. I wonder if that process could be used in layers with polyethylene
and a space alloy, both steel and aluminum are not truly gas tight, helium and
hydrogen will seep out right through it.

        • me
          August 6, 2023, 02:36 | # | Reply

If polyethylene were know to work for this, space agencies and
companies would use it already since it’s cheap, light,
          and easy to make.

          Oh. According to
          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Health_threat_from_cosmic_rays
#Spacecraft_shielding they kinda are, in a way.

The text below the picture talks about using metal shielding and
combining it with “hydrogen or [other] light elements for shielding”.

The easiest way for using “light elements” would be either water or
organic materials. (As in organic chemistry, the one which deals with
anything Carbon based, like for example plastic)

@PC: if you cared the to read the complete (lengthy) article it might
give you a nice summary of the problems and how they’re currently addressed.

PS: traveling to a star system with a star more active then our own
sun of course means more problems because of the stronger stellar winds.

But traveling through interstellar space or near a “softer” star might
also increase the radiation levels, because the sun protects us from
other sources (extremely high energy particles from other stars or
          even outside our own galaxy)

I know Musk has been tinkering with shielding, but to be honest
I haven’t been following him on twitter, I try to stay away from
most social media these days, too many trolls and people with
            axes to grind, etc…
A layered/mixture of steel, concrete, lead stops most ionizing
radiation, but that’s clearly not a good choice in space travel,
            much less combat.
True, a magnetic field will turn away 99% but the issue there is
the risk of damage to advanced electronics, like the AI brains,
            ship computers etc…
Not to mention the power requirements. we and the Empire
scientists need to learn how to shape a magnetic bottle that
would solve many of the issues, or a double layer of fields to
protect the sensitive bits. the inner could repel the outer field
from entering the space inside while traveling, and both would
need to be shut down for EVA or disembarking, Mostly the toby’s
            and the androids.
Wait… A Faraday cage! A mesh of copper or brass on the inner
layer could stop the outer field and convert the field it absorbs
back into power that could be reused to help power the field! A
buffer would be needed to stabilize the current, but it could work!

        Pigs didn’t miss a beat either…
        “OOO! A snack!” (chop)
Do NOT go in there when they are eating!

      Predictions:
      1) The draft will be primarily from red states.
      2) It will be used to fill combat arms.
      3) Soldiers will be abused with experimental drugs,
propaganda, and “Stuggle Sessions” where they will
be forced to admit their class guilt of the day.
What a great idea, when you’ve made the military
so toxic that no one wants to enlist.

“…and low unemployment, many experts believe the all-volunteer
force has reached a breaking point. And American confidence in
its military is at a low.”

“Low” unemployment ignores how many people are getting SSI
rather than getting a job. There’s your young, healthy people!

give something for “free” , and it becomes “Expected”.!
and the “Stupid” – “Pay me what I am worth.” mentality
so now all we have is useless teenagers, sitting around
expecting to be paid CEO, when they don’t know how to
          tie their shoes..
oh an SSI, i know a few who expect to “Keep” getting SSI
till they die.! (job or no job,, it’s now a right.)

I’m clearly not in a position to voice any opinion on this.

So I just want to point out one little detail:
      Quoting:
“The opinions expressed in this op-ed are those of the author
and do not necessarily reflect the views of Military.com.
If you would like to submit your own commentary, please send
your article to opinions@military.com for consideration.”

Sounds like a pretty vanilla disclaimer to me.
Like the ones you might find in the “letters to the editor
section” of a newspaper or magazine.

You could just do a “Putin” draft.
Pull them out of their cars and
throw in a truck for the front.
Did you see it on the news?
