The reason that I haven’t been updating the vote incentives recently is that
I’ve been fighting my new computer. I’m still using the old one to create this comic.
First, the brand-new motherboard was bad, fortunately I’ve been dealing with the
seller for a long time, so the bad one and a new one crossed paths in the mail.
But they didn’t have an exact replacement in stock, so they sent me a better one.
But that meant that I had to replace the processor with a newer version, also.
Now I’m trying to figure out why it won’t drive a display sometimes when I turn it on.
*sigh*. Once I get that done, I have to fine-tune DAZ Studio, the 3D program I use.
I’ve rendered a couple of images with it (when the monitor worked), and it’s about
six times faster than the old computer, so I really want to get it running smoothly.

Is there any common ground for the situations when the display is not working?
Like turning the computer on when it’s cold/hot. Are there any vibrations
affecting the computer (like heavy trucks rolling near the house)?
I assume you have checked all components if they’re firmly
in their place and all connectors.
Did you run diagnostics (memtest, diskcheck)?

Do you have one or maybe even two graphic cards?
Does the CPU has it’s own onboard graphics?

Are there any non vital components you could leave
      out for testing?

You said you had to pick a newer CPU – so maybe the
BIOS needs an upgrade to fully support it?

Do you the latest mico-code updates for your CPU
installed (should be done by either the BIOS or windows
      if those are up-to-date).

Does your graphic system have some known issues
      according to google?

The motherboard in an ASROCK Z590 Taichi, the processor is an Intel® Core™ i7-11700K.
I have two MSI RTX 3060 video cards, and all drivers and the BIOS are the latest versions.
        128GB DDR4 3200 RAM.
C: Drive is a WD 2tb M.2, as is the drive where Studio is installed.
It was fine-tuned at a computer shop, and worked properly when I picked it up.
I got it home, hooked it up, turned power on, and it worked properly.
Started the process of fine-tuning DAZ Studio, then shut it off and went to bed.
Fired it up the next morning, no video signal.
        Can’t do much without video.
Shut it off, did other things, fired it up and it had video.
Should have just put it to sleep, but those damned motherboard LEDs are
so annoying. I don’t want a circus in my box.
Sometimes when I power it up, the video works. Often, it doesn’t.
I would say it’s driving me crazy, but it’s not a drive, more like a short putt.

Your CPU does seem to have it’s own built-in graphics, too.
I don’t know your board, but it seems to be exposing these
to the outside. Have you tried connecting another monitor
to the onboard graphics? Maybe it sometimes prefers these
over the GPU cards (for whatever reason).
Or it might at least allow you to have a “look” at what’s going on
when it’s up but not running properly.

Have you checked the event logs? Is there some error messages
or warnings, maybe video related, maybe only there on some boots
          but not on others?

Both the shop and you did some fine-tuning – did you change settings
like memory timing or CPU clocking/voltages that the shop had tuned
          already?

Stuff sometimes working and sometimes not immediately after a cold
boot could be related to drivers and/or services getting into each other’s
way. Maybe some things need to be put on Delayed or even Manual start.
Does DAZ install some services of it’s own? Maybe you should try putting
          these on Manual.

If you have another M.2 card and are willing to swap them, you might
consider trying a freshly installed OS and see if that runs more stable.

Or, you might try retracing your steps, reverting the changes you did
to tune DAZ. Or even change a few memory or CPU settings to slightly
          less “tuny” settings.

Are you absolutely sure you havea large enough power supply?

Might want to enable POST in the CMOS and watch it check the system a time or two.

If all else fails, strip it down to minimal RAM, just the boot drive and just the MB graphics. Then
start adding equipment until it either pukes or consistently works. You may be pushing what the
          MB can reliably handle.

Take you’re time, a mistake can be costly!
A friend of my oldest had decided to build one and handed me
a box of (thankfully still in their packages) parts and a case.
What he didn’t do (and I should of doubled checked his parts),
was to check the compatibility of each part, toasted 2 mother-
    boards before I caught it.

Ah I get it! they are softening up the ground cover to make it
easier for the god-rods to penetrate the shielding. Plus the
shocks of the bombs will start micro-fractures throughout the
    shielding.

Yes! Slimy HAS learned the rules! Hopefully those two won’t
be able to get too much info on the ship, just enough to get
the ooooh’s and aaaah’s out of the way. But not any real
intel on the ships real capabilities. “but where are your
reactors? the fuel tanks? All I see are a few battery banks…”

A large mass hitting from orbit at orbital speeds
would generate a significant seismic wave.
Softening the ground around the impact site could
decrease its impact on surroundings potentially
      saving lives.

i saw em do this once.. hit with a M.O.A.B. made a big
“deep” crater, then the bunker buster.. not only did it
(moab) make it deeper. it loosened the ground cover.
so b,b got about twice the depth..

My guess is that they bombed first to “level the playing-field” – or rather
the building, so the “god rod(s)” (which are much more powerful and probably
less easy too aim) would hit a better defined target, and at closer-to-ground
    level.

No accidentally hitting something like chimney and splashing that over a few
dozen square miles. No need to calculate for the difference between hitting
empty rooms or the core structure of the building.

Google maps can see as closely as .3 meters, which converts
to a foot(11.81 inches). That’s the length of my shoe! I’d say
they can aim even closer. But I agree, busting up the ground
cover would make hitting the shielding over the bunker that
much easier. Those 2 bombs most likely dug down almost to
      the bunker shielding.

Seeing something on google maps is one thing.

Actually hitting it from thousands of km/miles above with
a kinetic impactor traveling at Mach whatever is something
        else entirely.

With the propulsion technology the Empire uses the KEWs needn’t be dropped from orbit.
They could be launched from 10,000 ft or so with a grav motor on the nose of the weapon
to accelerate it to the desired energy. Aiming would be a snap. Side note: the.guy who
does the.”Veritasium” YouTube channel did a piece on KEWs a month or so back. They had
trouble aiming but then they were simply dropping stuff from a hovering helicopter. A
military unit would doubtless have precision aiming equipment. Funny thing came out.
The rods would need fins to keep them pointed towards the ground otherwise they
would fall lying on their sides thus not developing nearly enough velocity. It an interesting
          watch. https://youtube.com/watch?v=J_n1FZaKzF8

miles away,. airforce can put a ‘smart bomb’ in a
            12″ window from 30,000 feet.

The test that China did wasn’t from orbit it was only like 3-4 km
and the damage was equal to a bunker-buster and that was
done back in the early ’70s. Using a weather balloon…
I don’t care what certain people say about a recent issue of late,

Also, google (or any other) maps tend to be out-of-date.
My parked car was clearly visible on google maps for years.

Long after I switched parking spots and even the car.

While I’m sure the Empire uses real time satellite footage for
their attack mission planing, I’m pretty sure any blueprints they
might have of the building are dated at least somewhat.

The CSA might have done any number of changes to the building.

          changing that design ruins that…
also,, the csa is cheap an lazy. do you think they
would spend the money and time to change that..

I don’t think they ever bothered sending one of these
street-map cars into my tiny corner of the globe.

The angle of the images seemed to be straight down,
so my guess would satellite or maybe airplane imaging.

The “clearly visible” was actually anything but that. I was
only able to identify the ten by three pixel blob because of
it being in the color of my car and in the location where I
            used to park it.

I wasn’t talking about the google mapping cars, the satellites they

The KEW to soften the ground and prepare the field.
The God Rods may….or may not….destroy the bunker and all within.

Even if the G-rods don’t reach they should send the
shield into the bunker turning it into a landfill.
Nobody is going to try and dig them out it would
take a mining crew a week just to reach it.
From the YouTube description each one would hit
with the force of a 1 megaton nuke. The first one
would break the shielding, the second would
slam it into the bunker in a V shape. In theory
      of course.

I still thing they don’t actually have to reach all the way down,
        to finish the job.

There has to be some kind of lift or endless staircase or tunnel
connecting the bunker with the surface.

Any close miss would still have to carry a massive amount of
energy that has to be dispensed, creating something like a local
earthquake. Probably enough to seal them in, maybe enough to
        damage their infrastructure severely.

Most likely not, but the bunker would collapse in on itself burying
the majority of it in rubble and what did survive would be unlivable.
Creating a “pharaoh’s tomb” for the assholes. Much like what
Matthew did to the old USA government during the fall by welding
          the door shut on them.

Csa government’s mistake is thinking nukes, and that bunker would be safe
from one, nuke go off above the ground while G-rods strike the ground and
transfer the full force of the impact into the ground. Throw a rock into the
water and that is how the impact will look like, while a nuke flattens and
burns/melts anything in it’s path, there is a lot of wasted energy when a
nuke is used, it goes into a ball in all directions, while the G-rod it’s all of it
    straight down.

It will spread sideways, too, at least somewhat. But that only makes

Yes, the ripple effect I mentioned but a nuke large enough
to have the same effect would wipe out the entire area
for miles and spread radiation and radioactive fallout up to
hundreds of miles. That’s also why they didn’t use asteroids,
no way to target them with any real accuracy or controllable
        effect.

          Exactly.

Above that, Asteroids are rarely shaped like a needle, nor is their
density anywhere near that of tungsten.

That means you’d need way too big a rock for reaching the same depth.

Having thought about this, I think I have been assuming this wartime political
environment is an extension of the trend we see in today’s world. None of the
new governments feel obligated to keep the agreements of their predecessors,
which the Empire has stated explicitly. The Geneva conventions and the rules for
conducting war in a gentlemanly fashion are gone, not just ignored as they are
today. Much as I would prefer a situation where certain basic rules of decency,
like hands off medical corps personnel, no attacking field hospitals or medical
transports, and the like, I wasn’t expecting anyone to try to hold anyone to
them. Even more so than in the real world today. However, if the Empire’s spin
on this is “You didn’t just kill or capture one of our citizens, you treated her as
an animal, indeed worse than an animal because no sane person tortures an
animal like that. If you had killed her in capturing her, or returned her to us
unharmed beyond injuries incurred in the capture, that would have been a
different matter. But you denied her personhood, insulting her species and
her empire, and that is unacceptable”, I can get behind that.

      February 20, 2023, 12:29 | # | Reply

What CSA did to her wasn’t an act of war, it was an act of terrorism.
Terrorists don’t follow any rules of engagement, they attack the weakest,
non-combatants they can find. To force the innocent to demand the
government to give in to their demands to save their people. They focus
on areas with the most amount of poor population so once they take
control they can convince or force more troops into their “cause”.
Guerrilla tactics do the opposite, they focus on military targets to weaken
and demoralize the troops, and leave the non-combatant population
      alone.
