That right there is, for my money, the 2nd best place to see snow. The best place to see snow is
an old photograph or better yet an oil painting. The 2nd worst place to see snow is through a
window of the house where I’m living. The absolute worst place to see snow is on the other side
of an automobile windshield because that means I’m likely driving in it. Note: it isn’t that I have
any special problem driving in snow. Nope. It’s the idiots I have to share the snowy road with.
Most people don’t have a clue how to drive on wet or icy/snowy roads. And that includes people
living where that video is from. I spent a week in Milwaukee right after they had their first
snowfall of the winter. You’d think they’d do okay seeing as how they drive in the stuff multiple
times every winter. But no. Those fools got into just as many wrecks up there as we do down here
in sunny south Texas. At least we down here have the excuse of it only snowing a couple of times
per decade. When that bad cold snap hit in February of ’21 there were drivers here who had never
driven on snowy streets. Had not even SEEN snow since before they had cut all their baby teeth.
I have a simple rule for driving on wet or icy roads. Don’t try to do anything fast. That includes
speeding up, slowing down/stopping or changing direction. I figured that out over 50 years ago.

Hell, I just wish someone would figure a way to economically send
that excess white fluffy water out ta intermountain Utah way.
We need the stuff.
My favorite winter weather is “mountain snow and valley rain”.
I can believe it Bill where I grew up 10 – 12 inches was a normal fall
I move 200 miles south and they seem to forget how to drive on slick
roads over the summer. I used to have fun blasting through 3 ft snow
drifts here, they spin out on a 6 in one heh. I was shocked to see them
close the schools here for a 3 – 4 in threat! I miss ice racing and my
snowmobile though… Ah well I have those memories to help keep me
(shivering head to toe while wondering WTF is wrong with me) warm? XD
Actually down here they close schools at a forecast of ice or snow and many businesses close down
as well. I used to think it was silly but now I agree. Why expose school bus drivers – and parents – along
with thousands of school children to the risk of injury resulting from a wreck? Likewise with businesses
and government offices. One day isn’t going to hurt anyone’s bottom line. And it’s so rare. A few places
such as grocery stores and gasoline stations will be open but most restaurants and other businesses
will close. Now up where it snows every winter, that’s a different thing all together. We lived in Wichita,
Ks for 5 years and it snowed every year. There were even city streets and roads where if you got stuck and
didn’t have snow tires or chains you were looking at a very hefty fine. I never bothered with snow tires but
made sure I always had a good set of all season radials.
I guess what I’m trying to say is the road crews don’t bother to plow around
here until the snow stops falling, but my home town they’d have the trucks
out either salting the road or plowing the moment the snow would start to
fall. They just don’t have the manpower or the equipment or the people to
handle that level of snowfall.
We don’t even have the equipment to clear roads down here. Never need it. They don’t
even keep salt. If it ices they will put a layer of sand on overpasses and bridges and that’s
it. Oh, and they will unfold the signs at bridges and overpasses warning that they may
ice up when it gets cold.

I had that rule and another: don’t stop. As long as you keep at
25 – 35 mph and ignore stop signs and lights you won’t get stuck.
It’s trickier and riskier than it sounds too. Hitting 35 would give
you the momentum to run through unseen drifts, nothing gets you
stuck faster than following traffic laws made for normal conditions.
A friend of ours, proclaiming since he was an experienced semi-
driver could handle 18 in snow, didn’t make it past the first stop sign
(face-palm) had to go out in -5 degree cold with a bitter wind to dig
him out and then I drove him to the store… jeez…
At the time I had a “94 Cutlass he had a Ford F150 4×4.
“Captain, I’m detecting 3 more security ships approaching our position.”
“… are they weapons hot?” “Blazing so… Hold please, 5 more ships are
heading this way now” “Oh boy not good, defense pattern…” ” They aren’t
baring down on us! They just lit up the security ships with targeting lasers!”
Petercat, I’ve been watching the snow train roll
into Buffalo the last 36 hours… it kept just
south of us, but now we’re being hit. 5 inches
of snow in two hours and coming down.
We’re having a bit of a cold snap in south Texas. Looking at highs in the mid 40s
(7° – 8° C for you metric folks) and rain through Monday with highs going back to
the high 50s and low 60s (14° – 16°) the rest of the week. No forecast of freezing
temps even at night. And that’s just the way I like it. Down here we really only
have 2 seasons – summer and fall/spring with the occasional freezing temps and
precipitation. I’ve lived where it gets cold – Wichita, Albuquerque, Tokyo –
and you folks are welcome to it!

Cold snap….. yep, that’s what we’d get in south
Arizona (Ft Huachuca). Cold enough for a jacket,
sometimes even a coat. Get the occasional heavy
frost or skiff of snow, that would melt as
soon as the sun hit.
Is it just me or does it look like the core worlds have essentially declared war on Catia? Looks
like the Pride is going to have to run the gauntlet just to get somewhere safe. I wonder what
the Pride’s missile stocks look like. I figure the cats carry grav drives to fabricate more but
even that number has to be limited. How about it, PC, is the Pride equipped to manufacture
replacement projectiles given a supply of raw materials? One would expect all star systems
to have asteroid belts and oort clouds so raw materials should be plentiful. For long duration
missions foodstocks would appear to be a limiting factor.
The shitbats started this over the Catians winning the vote,
their security tried to take the Dogushin’s ambassador while
they were having dinner with Palas and Michell. This may be
entirely the Shitbat’s doing but they didn’t expect this was
going to happen. They and the grasseaters still think the
Catians are backward and weak, begging for tech all the while
The Empire and the Pride has matched toe to toe several times
with the core’s ships. The Core’s been cocky and certain of their
power and place it’s time for that to fall flat!
If the Shitbats knew enough about the capabilities of the Pride to want it, they
wouldn’t have tried to seize it with smaller ships. They’re trying to capture it to
get the crew, and information about what the Empire is up to.
That is why they tried to snatch the Dogishuan ambassador, and the families of
the Humans and Imperials. Information. They don’t want to start a war yet, not
realizing that the Empire has started one without them. The longer they wait,
the stronger the Empire gets, which is just fine with Teresa.
And while the Ptera have been sharing some of what they’ve learned (They are
a Core system, after all) they haven’t shared everything, nor their interpretations
and conclusions. They want the big picture before they decide.
Considering how fast they could go using just the grav drives
that could change very quickly. I guess the grasseaters ship
has gone into hiding? If Captain Ktre’rrt is there they clearly
had time to return and report. The P’tera have been acting like
cautious wannabe friends while keeping their commitments to
employers/members. I feel they will side with the Empire in short
order, but you’ve flipped that switch before on me 😛
Well considering three things…
The Pride is fairly large, they expected to fight, and the missiles are only about 10 X 50 CM in
size (The specialized ones, such as jammers are about twice that size), they can carry quite a
few.
In their last refit they did away with their cargo holds and added crew and support space for
the fighters, a larger galley and increased life support. The Catia’s Pride is now a strictly
diplomatic ship, with no appreciable ability to trade. They have no ability to mine an asteroid
belt or refine the materials, although if they can buy finished materials, they can build a lot of
things in their machine shop. The grav units that they carry are spare parts for the Pride and
it’s fighters.
I got that impression after their refit, they’ve left several captured
trade ships with some of the new members and gave them the
means to build more. While the Pride is a diplomatic ship it has teeth
to deal with unfortunate situations like this.
I’m quite sure the Shitbats will hear some complaints as to their actions
but I think they were hoping to move fast and get the wanted info
before the council could react, the P’tera’s response time was way too
fast for it not to be deliberate.
You’ve set it up that there was 5 core races and so far we’ve met 3
unless you’re including the Dragons as core members? You’ve still
got a few ingredients you haven’t shared in this stew PC 😉
The dragons aren’t a Core race. The Core is the center of the roughly-spherical
“map” — really more of a diagram — of wormholes. The dragons are somewhere
outside the periphery of that “globe”, farther out than the humans, Catia and
Terra, unless their world(s) and the wormhole(s) leading to them are hidden.
Either way, they’re not on the “map”. Are you counting the Ptera, the shitbats
and the grass-eaters? I’d have to go back and see if any other species have
been identified as “Core”. We know very little about the Arachnids, for instance,
and less about whatever that was with the eye tentacles.
I’m guessing so as far as the core members, I didn’t
think the Dragons were core but I figured I’d ask since
I thought the humans were at the start.
But yes the P’tera, shitbats, and the grass-eaters as
to date. Captain Ktre’rrt said as much back on Catha.
I was hoping Larissa’s words were a signal to another member of the resistance.
The doorman is someone I can respect, the way he just stood there, even if he
did realize she was playing a role.

And the news just keeps getting

“But ya still gotta talk Southern”
And in the next strip, we get Larissa’s
