I had a similar conversation with my mother about my wife,
the only girls she liked for me were just like her, ah, no. I
got enough of that growing up, thank you. When she
commented that LuckyLady looked like a whore… yeah, it
was 3 years before I spoke to her again. All because of the
tube tops and Daisy Dukes. During a hot summer.
This weekend was a computer nightmare.
I had an SSD fail, taking two months work of artwork with it.
Commercial artwork, some of which was for a job that I hadn’t delivered yet.
It was weird – the folders were there, but showed as empty. I was in a panic.
I tried every data recovery trick I could think of, even buying new recovery
software. Nothing worked.
I had about given up on many, many hours of work as permanently lost.
I have an old Win7 laptop that I use for older games – C&C, Duke Nukem
side scrollers, the old stuff that won’t run on Win10 or 11.
I thought “Why not?” and plugged the SSD in with a USB adapter.
A window popped up, “Drive F has problems. Would you like to attempt
a repair?”
There was no “Oh, hell yes!” button, so I clicked on “yes”.
The hourglass stayed on. And stayed on. For hours. Then the computer beeped.
The files were visible then. I didn’t do anything except immediately copy them to
the laptop’s C drive. Then plug in a USB stick and copied all the files to it.
Then I plugged in an NVME drive with an adapter and copied them again.
Not taking any chances.
Now that computer has two SSDs in a RAID-5 array. Duplicate drives. Different
manufacturers. Not taking any chances.
Not using Crucial or Micron products again. They have short lives
(Drive had 882 hours on it.) and don’t honor warranty.
All is okay now, I have a headache.
I keep telling myself to make regular backups and never do.
Sounds like there was an error that affected the, aw damn, forgot the name…
The index sector. If they still do that, I’m not up on the NTFS, I was more used
to FAT32. Anyway I’m glad you recovered your files, I lost everything when
that 10gb HHD failed.
roommate does an online comic,. and had her ssd fail (crucial).
IT guy was able to recover. and did the same thing. 3 new drives
WD, Seagate, an Samsung. the Samsung SSD is more pricy,
but has a better record and warranty.!
oh the IT guy took the old drive to the range and turned into
so many exploded view parts.!!

Whew!!! So glad that worked. I still have my HP Workstation from 2012 with Win 7.
It is stored in a faraday cage. And learned the “lost files” lesson many years ago.
I now keep so many backups in so many places I don’t remember how many are there 🙂
Mine is a compact Acer One. I used an external mech to
clone the HDD onto a larger SSD, and got higher capacity and
much greater startup speed. I kept the old HDD just in case.
Said it before….
Win7 was the pinnacle of MS operating
systems. Everything before and after
(especially after) are buggy, bloated,
and spyware.
I still have an old laptop with Win7 on it.
Currently it’s on loan to a g’daughter.
(I hope I can eventually get it back)
Yep, he’s just convinced her he’s safe, took me almost a year
to convince my wife I wasn’t going to cheat on her. When that
switch finally flipped, well, I was very tired for weeks. When a
woman gets burned, many don’t trust anyone, ever again.
She looks good in white I might add 😉
Ah the joys of a classless system, I’m glad they are getting enough
of the locals seeing the proof with their own eyes time and time
again. The shear mass of planets and peoples of the GC tells me
that the Empire with scare the ever lovin’ crap outta anyone else.
Once the right people are in charge and accept membership that is.

I forgot to mention, my eldest son informed me that he
was tested for the same thing my wife and his kid brother
has, He has it too, but not bad enough to put him at risk
for a while, and all 3 of his kids don’t have it. Talk
about a sigh of relief! With carefulness and luck he may
never need oxy until he’s old and grey.

Hear Here! I had a tower that was a Win7, I miss it,
granted this one was miles ahead, but I got less errors.
I am glad that worked well for you. Having a separate backup will
always save the fear of those files going to the digital grave of no return.
