Father’s smile looks apprehensive. Understandable. If she accepts, he will have lost all his children to this “Empire” that has just humiliated his nation. HE may not care about Lamia’s defeat at the hands of an enemy whose face appears to be made of Cats, but he has to assume many of his neighbors will.
But it may be the best thing for her. A navy that doesn’t discriminate by race OR gender, and maybe one where she can get the surgery she needs to restore her spinal cord. Or a career largely spent in weightlessness where her inability to use her legs may be less of a handicap. Mixed feelings for sure.
Can’t see where the sister’s given name was given before. Is Shama a pet name? I am assuming Alyshia is her given name, as I doubt in a society where they can’t own property, women can pass their surnames on to their daughters.

And Captain Herrat has mixed feelings for sure. He’s figured something out that no one expected him to.
I’m working on a 28″ 4K monitor, and the lettering is tiny and hard to read.
He’s figured out that … there are humans in the Empire? And from there probably that the military might that won the Catia campaign was from outside Catia. And from THERE, will he realize there’s an unknown (at least part-)human world, or will he mis-identify the source as being “the southern worlds”, which we still don’t know much about? I don’t THINK anyone has used the term “Dragon Empire” in Lamian space, or shown a human face where a Lamian could see it. I just didn’t think about that until now. The marines keeping their visors closed IS a big hint about that part of the plan.
