Does anyone know of a planet that we can
do that with the idiots out there now?
    Wouldn’t it be loverly?
Excellent idea a post on the fringe.

Well, there’s always places like Hiva_Oa…
I’m sure we could offer the residents enough to relocate.

Some of the ‘customers’ for such ‘service’ should be placed
at islands that are ‘tide-challenged’ (flooded at high tide…)

Why bother? From what I’ve seen, a extra-high tide
might be the best bath some of them ever had! heh…

The amount of damage and harm these type can, and have done, I’m
against any kind of penal colony personally, but those fools seem
to try to hurt people if we don’t “give them the right to be heard”
so yeah, you want green living, here’s your sign… wait, I mean
here’s you seeds, go, go plant something….Be happy that when
things happen as you predict, you’ll be safe and sound. What? Oh
sure, there will be a Starbucks there,
once you have your civilization built up…

What are the characteristics of a penal colony to which you object?
          No guards, no imposed discipline…
No one is forced to support you…
Your life is a result of your choices…
          Total freedom.

Sorry, I don’t object to them for the people sent there, oh no never!
I object to the idea of them only because of the risk to innocents
that land there on accident. We all talked about it months ago about
dropping off the prisoners from the pirate attacks and so on. I doubt
they would be as bad as men-only planet filled with the most violent
types, just the brain damage caused by any visitors being forced to
listen to each and every colonists ideas on the right way of taking
care of mother earth… The “soap box” stone worn smooth by the
speakers, the ground around it littered with Starbucks cups and
            sugar free gum wrappers…

I’m not really bashing Starbucks, just the last time I was in one
it was filled with yuppies, goth, emo, hipsters, and wanna-bies.
I felt my IQ points dropping as I dashed back out.

Those islands sound nice, but there are too many, too close
together, too much chance of island hopping and escaping.
NOW…..for true island isolation, there is Easter Island,
        and Pitcairn Island.
Two of the most isolated islands in the Pacific.
They’re about 1200 miles from each other,
and Chile is another 2000+ miles
to the east of Easter Island.

Unless there are huge hungry predators capable of destroying any
wooden ships and an island seldom has the resources to build steel
ones; thus the only way to “island hop” is to develop flight. That
would take so long it wouldn’t be the same society as those originally
abandoned there – and that would only be the few that survived.
(The colonization of Australia by England almost failed
due to crop failures during the first two years)
(And Australia wasn’t exactly a small island,
nor were the convicts abandoned here.)

I call it “Coventry”. There is tons of pretty much empty land in the
southwest. Somebody called it “Miles and miles and miles of
nothing but miles and miles and miles”. Fence it in. Provide food
and water at designated places and times and provide building
material for shelter. Maybe even provide seed for crops. When
someone is exiled they have a tiny pea-sized device implanted
at the base of their brain. The device consists of a microchip and
a charge of plastic explosive. The device would be set off by a
special digital signal from a transmitter on a very specific frequency.
Transmitters of that signal would be placed at intervals around the
area. Additionally transmitters would be in the doorway of every
building to which the public has access plus in every streetlight,
traffic light, phone booth and would be transmitted at intervals
from every cell phone, television, computer, video game and
even automobile controller. If the exilee comes within range of
a transmitter, they die painlessly. Otherwise they can never
      reenter civilization again.

Yes, I’ve thought about this a good bit. If someone indicates a total
unwillingness to abide by the conventions of civilized society then
society has the collective right to expell them – PERMANENTLY!

When you get more of your eyesight back, you need
        to (re)read R. A. Heinlein’s “Coventry” (1940)
(collected into “Revolt in 2100” (1953)).
Same basic idea, without the high tech gizmo
electronic implants, and no permanent exile.

There is ways to defeat that, the only sure way is to isolate them
completely from any mainland, force them to work HARD for a chance
to reach other people. It might take years, decades, generations
even. by time they can reach the rest of the world, maybe, just
maybe, they will have learned WHY they were sent there to start with.
They would be hindered by the lack of lattes don’t forget… And
finding rocks to stand on so they could be heard… No soap boxes.

Maybe my little death pills could be defeated but not easily
and for sure not safely. Sure a good surgeon, working under
proper conditions could remove it. But would you trust a
defrocked Doctor working out of a shack? Be more likely to
kill you (or turn you into a vegetable) as free you.

          But it’s all just imagination.
I’ve heard that the Constitution prohibits internal exile.

Seriously, as I understand it, certain altitudes in the Venus atmosphere
are actually quite Earthlike. So setting up platform cities floating at the
appropriate altitudes would make excellent exile locations. Resources
mined from the atmosphere should provide sufficient capibilities to
maintain the platforms, farming and the like, would likely be done through
aeroponics, along with lab grown meats.
Sufficiently objectionable individuals, who would endanger the community
could then simply be, ‘kicked off the island’ so to speak, and would be dead
far before their remains ever reached the planet’s surface.
The exiles could work on terra forming the planet, but would likely need to
figure out how to spin up the planet to allow coping of the surface, as well
As adding water to the environment.

I get this feeling in the pit of my stomach that we will revisit
The Buns in a few months only to find there’s a hostile force
being “annoying.” Weaponizing that toxic waste would be
bad for all. If it burns they could ruin the entire planet…
If used as a spray or like Napalm, it would be very bad.

It is pretty obvious we haven’t seen the last of the pollution issue,
and a marginal mining site suddenly becomes very viable when former
secure supplies are suddenly no longer available.
So I think you are right, but will a mining fleet be a match for a Peterian
light cruiser and an Imperial long range patrol ship?
They might not get to even set foot on the planet this time.

I’m thinking they might try to make the Lapordae an “example” since they
seem to be behind on some of the tech other’s have, no doubt because of
the core’s policies on the “lessor races.” Typical bullies, “Hey they look
weak, let’s get ’em!” way of thinking. The bunnies are friendly folk, while
more than able to make a “point” WITH a point! I’m not saying they will
succeed, but they will try hard.

There are two problems with an unsupervised penal colony.
The first is that the very worst and most psychopathic of
the inmates inevitably come to rule over the rest.
And the second is that they will get out sooner or later.
IF I trusted our courts to convict only the actually guilty,
    I’d be in favor of abolishing the life sentence;
if you’re too vicious to ever be allowed to rejoin society,
you should be killed instead of imprisoned.

The down-side of killing the leaders is the followers want revenge.
It’s best to let them figured it out for themselves. “We’re here
because of YOUR dumb-ass!” followed by “Oh what have we done?!?
      Who will lead us now?”

I’m sure decent methods can be setup a penal planet to
keep other’s safe from the inhabitants. These MEF types
are too busy talking to really do anything OTHER that talk.
But it only takes one to work up the rest, as we seen in
