I was afraid that I wouldn’t get this page up. My computer had
slowed to almost a stop. It sits in a corner of my desk behind
two monitors, and I had to dig it out and replace the CMOS
battery and re-diddle the BIOS to put everything back to the
way I wanted it. That took a lot of time away from creating
    the comic…
Stripecoat, I’m glad you’re commenting again, too many
of my old readers have stopped, much to my sadness.
I hope all goes well for you!

Scarsdale, no hurry. I’m putting that new motherboard into an
old Dell case, and NOTHING fits. Dell and HP use a LOT of
proprietary hardware, like power supplies and such. Even the
power switch and USB ports use non-standard connections.
My new remote switch will mount under my desk along with
the new USB hub… When Amazon delivers them on Thursday.
      I hate Dell!

That’s fine PC, let me know if any changes are needed, I have
made that fan hood, but the printer crashed just as it started
to print. I know how that is, I built a pc using an older Compaq
case, it was a good thing I spent time as a mechanic, I spent
a lot of time drilling and fabricating straps and mounts.
Compaq started that proprietary hardware BS. The case was late
        90s, with the mother/daughter boards, I installed a mini-ATX.

Nah, I’m using that AsRock motherboard that you’re making the IO plate for.
I bought the Dell cheap off of Craigslist because it had a fast processor, a
1TB Samsung NVME drive, and 64GB of Corsair RAM. The guy was asking
$100 for it because it wouldn’t power on.
When I went to pick it up, I reached in back to turn the power switch off
before moving it and, oops! It was already turned off. So I turned it on and
          it powered right up.
I told the guy “It runs fine. It’s worth more than a hundred.” He just said
“Take it. I’m sick of it, and I’ve already got another one.”
It even came with a working monitor, mouse and keyboard. I used it as
my internet computer until I bought a Lenovo Tiny to clear up desk space.
I like the case because it’s small for a desktop and ugly as sin.

Heh, nothing wrong with ugly. You should of seen the 2 desk-pro’s
I got off Ebay back in ’04, actually I got 5, but it took parts from 3
to get the other 2 working again. I had to trim down a standard
video card to fit the slot and after all was said and done I still had
to use duct tape to hold the Cd drive in place on one. Not to
mention the Frankenstein-ish looking interior of the Compaq I rebuild
for my oldest. That tower had a spot to hold a CD in the front, under
a cover, I used it for an AUX fan. NOT my cleanest work…

I did get the IO plates done, I’ll send them off asap. I made 2, so you’ll
            have a spare.

Trust me, I know! When you’re working on a short budget,
you do the best you can. I handmade most of those mounts
using a hammer and a vise. the ATX mobo had to sit father
back to line up with the expansion slots and the IO. so I
made a few “Z” brackets and drilled a few holes for the
forward mounts. My kid sister spent some time doing IT work
so she had quite a few spares.

Well, looking like a 8-10 years old computer that’s been through hell certainly did that!
Original setup was a 450 mhz cpu with 128 mb ram, I updated it to 1.1 ghz with 2 gig
ram. My son kept asking if I could overclock it, ah no, I could, but not on my dollar kid!

Petercat, I sympathize with you. I have resurrected my desktop
several times and finally had to give upon the original Compaq
case and buy a good low priced mid-tower from Cooler Master that
has survived 3 motherboard replacements and is still going strong.
Generic cases are the best for longevity.
After looking at modern offerings I have to ask why
the focus is now on RGB instead of disk drive bays.
It has been too long since my case upgrade.
    Keep the faith.

I’ve been looking for a case for an ATX motherboard and can’t find one I like,
mostly because I want medium tower with good airflow, no transparent sides
and 5.25 inch drive bays for a DVD drive and space to add a USB block.
Modern cases place form over function, I’m not fond of LED lighting or fancy
      fans behind solid panels.
If I want colored lights I’ll wait for Christmas. Just give me a simple case for
      my parts!
And those damned top mounted switches and ports are hard to locate and get
      clogged with dust.

I seen several “open air” cases, not good if you have small kids, but
easy access for maintenance and upgrades, I’ve been out of that “hobby”
for quite a while. This monster tower I have now isn’t open air but it’s
massive enough I could add some pretty fancy stuff, if I had a reason too.
Just go to MicroCenter.com, it’ll give you ideas if nothing else.

I’ll do that, I might need a tower if I go with those raspberry PI controllers
for printers, it’d be nice to be able to sit here, watch the progress, start
prints, stop them if something goes wrong before any damage, etc…
Not really needed with just 2 in the next room, but if I get more I’ll need
a shop to keep them, so wifi communication would make it SO much easier!

Being a retired military NCO, I’m a more direct kind of guy.
(especially when you deal with CDATs and grunts)
There’s no sense in trying to talk sense to these envirowackos (EWs).
I would have sought out the guy with the biggest, high rise, 4WD,
pick-em-up, and ask if he had chains or a tow strap.
Then ask for several big, brawny, burly guys to help keep the EWs
out of the way, attach the chain/strap to the trailer, then pull
the trailer (and all the connected trash) way off the road and
      into the desert.
And if it looks like the EWs are going to drag the trailer back
to the road, then flatten the tires.
And to all the whiners “we’re attached”, well, you’d better detach quick.
You made this choice on your own. Take responsibility for your consequences.

Sorry for the rant PC, but these EWs just get on my last raw nerve,
being the instigators, but playing the victim. And all the people
being held up in traffic trying to talk sense. Pffftttt. The time for
talk is past. It’s time for action. The only way these EWs will stop
      is when they get hurt.

I hope someone leaves a “lil’ book with them, I think it would be nice
if they joined up, once the a-holes are cleared out in Cali. Careful Doc,
they are real touchy about that question, for good reason.

Prime was definitely leaning towards joining up, but he did ask the right
question. It would be risky for them as a race if they joined up! However,
this is a new group of people that could help crew those ships, if not
faster, at least more crew members in the long run. The Empire will be
needing as many battle-ready ships as fast as they can, once the core’s
    leaders realize it’s not “faked”.

      I won’t say that I’m not worried, but since I’m already well-prepared

My biggest worry is my roof.
Judging from the videos, the storm will pass right over my home.
But judging from the articles online, once the storm hits the

Seriously, every news article is about Florida, with a few mentions
of the Carolinas. Georgia, however, might as well not exist to the
major news networks. Which I normally like, the less they notice us,

Can EVs be charged while moving? There was a tweet from someone
who built an APU for his, a diesel generator on a trailer. It had a fiberglass
    body that matched his car.
    Tweet has been taken down.
I don’t know how well it would work, Ford EV trucks can’t tow for shit. It
severely reduces their range. Other EVs? I dunno.

    • Scarsdale
      August 29, 2023, 19:46 | # | Reply

The generator would have to put out twice the power that
the EV needs to move, which completely defeats the entire
reason for having one. I say that because the output would
be taken up charging the battery otherwise, on the highway
you would still drain the battery. It’s been looked at by smarter
people than me, there is simply no gain for trying that, unless
you only drive city speeds, and even then not enough to
      make it worthwhile.

Now the prediction is 3″ of rain and maximum 21mph winds.
21mph. Go figure. My security camera recordings are going to be soooo boring.

Hurricanes are the opposite of teen-aged girls, their winds change
with their moods, not the other way around! heh…

Oh my sides! Thanks, I needed a good laugh. I can tell you either have had girls,
or like me grew up with sisters!

I have some iffy news, I met with a Gastro doc a little while ago, he’s worried
my cancer is back. Nothing solid yet, the fact I can’t have dye for a CT scan and
the plate in my neck rules out a MRI, so he’s having me clear out my insides
and keep that way for 6 weeks to see if it stops the pain. If it doesn’t in that
time then I might need something more drastic done. The last scope I had done
up there showed many, many polyps, so it’s a big maybe…

Okay, power finally came back, I was ready to fire up the generator again.
Between trying to keep track of things weather-related and all, I am behind
a bit on the comic. You’ll see at 2000, heh. There IS a partial page up, I’m
working on the Bunny story now, it should be up before 2200.
Storm was a nothing burger, a bit of rain but nothing unusual about the wind.
Lost power because some idiot hit a power pole just down the road and the
electric company had to replace it.
If it hadn’t been for one stupid driver, today would have been an ordinary,
    but somewhat wet, day.
Seriously, what the heck was that all about? I bought big tarps and
fasteners for roof repairs and everything! Sheesh.

I’m still having a hell of a time finding hurricane information about
Georgia online. I’ve barely managed to find out that it’s already past me,
and it came within a few miles.
Everything online is Florida-Florida-Florida. I guess Georgia doesn’t matter.
Or everyone is hoping that Gov Desantis makes a mistake so they can pounce.
