Ah, it was the cost of the sword was the issue! (wipes forehead) I was
thinking he was talking about the rings too. Glad to see it, now for the
shocker than she’s got gold etc…

Nice, seems all the Terran missiles hit their targets! Seeing the damage
that 2 “kitty litter” did to that first dog ship, much less those grasseaters
the first time, There won’t be much left, or at least well “aired” out! Those
Shitbats do tend to smell up the place! HEH….
I’m still hoping there’s at least a few survivors, fresh intel would be helpful.
And those Shitbats talk a good game, but like any bully, easily spooked
into talking (Oh Capt’ Chardis… Got some new chew toys for yooouuu…) 😉

I was thinking similarly, that she’d buy the sword. Only PC knows, but
      we’ll all find out soon.

My wife did that when we got engaged. She didn’t think it was right
that she got an engagement ring, and I got nothing. So she bought
me a nice watch. I still have it after 35 years. It got pretty scratched
up in the first dozen years or so, so she bought me another. That one
I’ve mostly managed to not scratch up.

Heh, my wife did the same for me. sadly the resin the factory used
ruined clothes and such, so the watch only lasted 6 months. I started
buying only stainless steel watches with the steel bands after that,
and those only lasted just over a year. That powdered Polyurethane
resin reacted to both heat and water, so I had shirts after a fire that
were like over starched pants. Think stormtrooper armor HEH!

PC, yesterday my son and I re-rearranged my bedroom (my wife
wanted her side of the bed back) so I took advantage and pulled
my tower for a much-needed cleaning. and here’s the thing, I did
reverse the top fan but I had forgotten why I hadn’t bothered,
there’s 2 fan vents in the top but only one had a fan! Go figure…
I’m looking at better fans than the fancy colored LEDs, and better
way to filter this case. The front is a half glass with a metal cover
that overlaps it by a couple of inches and a 1/2 in gap for air flow.
    NOT easy to filter.
Plus the 3 fans are in a frame not screwed on a plate with holes.

Just offhand, I would guess that the holes on top are for a two-fan
CPU radiator. For extra fans, I would personally choose Arctic, they
have a great reputation and are quiet.
For odd sizes I have used (ball bearing) fans from WINSINN or
GDSTIME from Amazon with good results. But, as I have said
before, install SPECCY and see what your temperatures are. You
might not need to change anything at all.
Heh. My internet computer has only one fan for everything. It’s a
Lenovo M73 Tiny with an SSD running Linux that sits on a tiny
shelf underneath my desktop, so it’s out of the way. It came with
Windows 10 Pro on it, but it’s my only computer that’s connected
to the internet, so I installed Linux and Firefox.
No more Windows: “We’re changing the settings and software
on your computer whether you like it or not, slave! All your data
      belongs to us Bwaaa-haa-ha!”.

I have seriously thought about Linux many times, It’s hardly plug and play
but I agree, I’ve got 10 on this and it’s starting to piss me off, constant
reminders to “UPGRADE NOW!” I managed to defrock most of the nag
software but it still sneaks through now and then. I had a hunch the
double was for something special, I took down the box (I still have the
original box it came in) and looked through the paperwork I stored in
there. It’s a Cyberware custom PC, I’ve got one large PCI and 2 mini
PCI slots open yet plus the wire bundles were tucked in behind the PSU.
If I had cash to burn this baby would be screaming! Heh…

I’ll look into seccy this thing came with something called HWM but it’s
shareware blah blah.. I did check before/after reads after the cleaning
it dropped 4 C on both the CPU and the GPU so flipping and cleaning
          did help.

You would be amazed at how far Linux has come.
I installed Ubuntu on this computer, and it was easy and fast.
          https://ubuntu.com/tutorials/install-ubuntu-desktop#1-overview
It installs with Firefox as the default browser. I believe you can
connect your old HDD and import your bookmarks from Windows to
          Firefox.
What I did was remove the Win10 hard drive (for maybe reuse
later) and purchase an SSD directly from WD for my Ubuntu install.
          https://www.westerndigital.com/products/internal-drives/sandisk-ultra-3d-sata-iii-ssd#SDSSDH3-2T00-G25
Sandisk is Western Digital. 10% off until the 28th.
I might go for the 4TB next.
The reason I saved the W10 HDD is in case I want to return
          to that OS later.

I more-or-less stopped using WIndows privately several years back.

Basically, I only boot into Windows like thrice a year for the odd piece
of software that still refuses to run under Linux.

(Work is a different beast, as I have to deal with whatever software my employer uses)

My biggest worry right now is the steam accounts I have and the many
games I have on it. I got that account about the same time I got this
              computer.

Leave the Win10 hard drive in it and install Linux to another, and
make your computer a dual boot. That way you can boot into
Windows when you want to play, and Linux when you don’t.
I wonder if you can play Steam in WINE (A Windows emulator in Linux).

My son would know, he’s an Apple user (oh the shame!)
he dual boots Linux and the OS2? I’m out of date on that
stuff. and he runs the Windows emu on Linux.

Steamlauncher runs just fine, as for individual games your experience might
                vary.

But as far as I remember they do have their own version of wine and are at least
somewhat trying to support Linux best they can. (They did have – maybe even do
have still – there own version of Linux called SteamOS, too)

The few games I still play are mostly coming with a linux version anyway so I don’t
have much experience on this front.

(Apple’s OS should be called MacOS by the way)

As for dual boot: most Linux distributions would by default detect an
existing Windows installation and offer you to activate this anyway.

It’s probably best to have a separate drive for Linux and Windows each,
but I’ve never had problems with installing Linux on the same disk (The
installer would usually detect the windows partition and offer to shrink it,
                making space for Linux)
(You should, of course, backup your system before making a huge change
                like installing another OS anyway)

I know the feeling, the two computers that I create this comic on have
to be Windows (7 and 10) because of the software that I use. Once I had
them set up, they have never been connected online. The older Win7
one has been air-gapped since 2016!
Blender works in Linux, but it’s really not worth the effort to learn.

I have an older laptop (I’ll have to look and see what it is when I get home) that has Win7 on it, and I use it online all the time, casual browsing & bill paying.
Yes, I do get notices that “you’re due for an update”, but I just ignore them.
I did click through once, just to see what would happen….
the update software analyzed my laptop & said (basically), “oops, computer/hardware out of date, can’t update”.
I have a workhorse laptop with Win10, maybe I’ll download anything savable & try to convert to Linux. (can’t hurt)
I’m glad to see that Linux has advanced enough to be more “plug & play” instead of so manual.
I’m a hardware guy, software scares me, I’m afraid if I push the wrong button, everything will delete.

Don’t worry, in order to delete everything,
you have to push at least two buttons.

Fun fact: once upon a time (20 years back or 25?) I accidentally
ran “rm -rf /” as “root” on one of my computers, which deletes
                    every single file on disk.

I did try to interrupt it, but of course some damage was already done.
Specifically, the information about the user accounts on the box where
                    lost (/etc/passwd and such).

Before I reinstalled the system I played around with the wreckage for a bit.
                    …
At one point I tried the “who” command (which should tell me the names of any logged
                    in user(s) …)
                    Answer:

                    “You don’t exist. Go away.”

(Was almost worth the trouble of having to reinstall the thing)

      That’s the exact unit I have, (Except mine’s a 280) I added two more Arctic 140mm fans so I
have four in a push-pull setup. I bought this and have extra fans now:

I bought the same pack in 120mm for my case fans.

I’ll have to take measurements, collect parts, kiss my
wife and load it all up and go visit “my grandkids”
while my eldest does his thing heh…
He’ll be SO happy but he owes me repairs so :p
I need more ram too, it came with 16 gig, not
really enough for long-term CAD work, I have to
wait on the CPU to compile with the GPU.
I’m sure you know how long THAT can take…
And I can guess with TGW.

I really will visit the grandkids, however, last time I was there
I was undergoing chemo, everyone acted like
I was made of crystal! It was before the side-

        see it.

You know, all this talk of computers reminds me of a joke I once
    played on an insufferable manager.
I screen captured an image of his desktop, hid his icons, and set
that image as his desktop background image.
He kept clicking on icons and nothing was happening.
After it came back from the shop a few days later, he announced
to everyone that if he ever figured out who’d done it, they’d be
    fired.
This was the guy that thought he was smarter than everyone else
because he had an MA in Business Administration.
    More educated? Maybe. Smarter? No.

Some guys at my office installed a screenshot of a “blue screen of death” as
screen save on the PC of a (not exactly bright) colleague once.

They had quite some fun with him for a while …

Another nice prank: we had a dedicated network monitoring screen around that
time … of course someone took a screenshot of a total outtage and used *that*
as a screensaver to give whoever entered the office first a nice little scare.

He should’ve realized it pretty much instantly.

But since he was such a IT genius (self proclaimed) he
kept just retesting the thingy – only for it to crash the next
time he stayed off keyboard for too long.
