Yeahh, I begin to smell a rat — a whole rat nest in fact. After thinking back over Mom’s thoughtful expressions, Dad’s words, and Mala’s Pentia’s and Rendel’s chief’s reactions after giving them this assignment, I suspect there has been a lot of previous communication going on behind the scenes. I wonder if it included the Romani. I think this has all been a test for Rendel, and possibly for Mala as well.
I also think Carl is going to alter his will, and we’ll find out about that all too soon. I respect a man (generic non-species and non-gender-specific meaning) who can admit he was wrong and try to improve himself by fixing his errors.
Says a lot about our current world when you feel like you have to throw in disclaimers like you did in your last sentence – none of it good! Shouldn’t have to do that. I suspect anybody who follows this comic would know what you meant, Jochi. I know I did.
It was intended a bit tongue-in-cheek to make fun of people who insist on such, or try to force me to use new non-gendered words in place of those in use for generations. It used to be common English to talk of the two men in the Garden of Eden — and everyone knew the second one wasn’t Eve’s sassy gay friend. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQhkzYVlLl8
If anybody tried to “test” Mala, they would face the Wrath of (Pentia) Karen… Not to mention Teresa. Karen and the unnamed Customs inspector merely noticed the mutual attraction.
I’ll admit, I did get “Gran Torino” vibes when writing the story.
Petercat, Thank You for writing these stories. This place is serving as a refuge for me right now, a window into a world that is still rational and where good and evil are distinguishable from one another.

Thank you. Maybe that’s why TWC has been staying in the 20s on Top Webcomics.com.
Writing them is my own refuge, as is reading the comments.
