Diane you and Seth are safe now, you can get some sleep now.
It’s a good thing the Capt. didn’t know,
he might have messed things up.
It’s also a good thing the bunnies
saved Capt. Hrt’rrn’s butt.
Heh heh, he does look like someone that blew it and didn’t know it

Hrrn’tn blew it! Cheer Up Hrrn’tn, maybe Caorda willl take you as

Oh yeah, I forgot he does have to report to the Queen,
and he can’t throw anyone under the bus,
because it is his command and his name is on the bottom line.
Excuse me, but if anyone’s ass needs to be in a size 10xlg sling it ought to be
Lt T’chagen. Yes, Capt Hrrn’tn was in command but T’chagen withheld critical
Information in a highly sensitive situation. You don’t f**k around when lives are
at stake. The Lt should have informed the Captain when the ships arrived and
formally terminated the exercise. At the very least Capt Hrrn’tn and Lt T’chagen
should have been on the bridge. PEOPLE DIED – NEEDLESSLY! because of Lt
T’chagen’s little practical joke! I say again. You don’t f**k around when lives are
at stake! Part of a subordinate’s job is to make sure their superiors have as
much pertinent information as possible. Somebody’s ass needs to end up in a
very large sling!
Yeah, I should have picked a different color for the word balloons.
Balloons with rounded corners are people there talking, ones with
square corners are electronic – either commo or computer. In this
case, it’s the ship’s computer. It’s not AI, it’s “dumb”, so to speak.
I think from now on, all computer voices will be pink.
Thanks, PC. I was about to respond to Bill that I thought it was the
computer that was talking to the captain, and you just confirmed it.
That said, the bunnies thought the captain and LT had gone to the planet.
They didn’t know it was a simulation. To them, it was real. To the captain and
LT, it was a simulation. Only the computer knew the truth.

The reassurances Dianna has been given seems to have settled
her doubts a lot (but not removed them). It remains to be seen
how Seth is holding up, but I think his mind contact with Teresa
will only reinforce the assurances Dianna has received.
I can see already that Diana will take to her new life like
a duck to water, she’s already making friends!
HAHAhAHa heheh (WHEEEEEEEze) hehheheh… PC you dog!
you let me talk myself out of it being real and you switch it
up like that! 😛 I love the look on Capt. Hrrn’tn face, the
only way it could of been funnier is he was Terran, other
than the blank, dumbfounded stare, it’s hard to read his face.
I wouldn’t want to be the one to explain how a bunch of
Ensigns, still with that “showroom smell” still on them, took
down one cruiser and captured another, and 5 liners and
freighters, and he just sat in his office and watched….
“Can you feel the heat tonight…” I never did like the smell
of burning animal hide… 😉
This does prove one thing though, the Laporidae, while not
being a predatory race, can and will stand toe-to-toe with any
race from the core and walk away smiling. C’mon Hrrn’tn blink
twice, stand up, and graduate that class and give Caorda his
LT bars already! I was going to say at least Commander, but I
think he needs a bit more experience as yet.
You got me. I hoped it was real but people argued that it was a simulation that
the bun buns handled textbook plus well with all the extra surprises.
That is one surprised warrior captain. A learning experience. And he evaluated
it calmly and cooly and watched the bun buns make rather good enough decisions.
The raw Ensigns did fine. Now its other people’s problems. For real.
Truth is the basic rule of any great fighting force.
Good food. Good fights. Good company. Good futures. Good time to be them.
As a supposed prey descended species, the bun buns would by evolution naturally
capable of situational awareness. Just a slight alteration of goals to shift that to winning
the situation rather that keeping the tie of living through the situation gets results.
This belonged in te previous comment.

And yes, the buns deserve graduations, promotions, and

Naw, by then it was all managed, so him doing the hyper-speed dash to the bridge
wouldn’t change anything, and worry the ensigns needlessly. Not to mention the
embarrassment of the “oops.” If anyone gets into trouble, it should be his second,
not the Capt.
I think the best way to spin the situation for Hrrn’tn would be to explain that they had
so much confidence in their trained ensigns, that they felt with the situation changed
from a sim to an actual situation that they just watched to be safe…
EEhh… To be honest, I’d have a hard time accepting it, but it’s better than “I didn’t
know it wasn’t the planned sim”.
1. I pity anyone that takes on the bunnies in the future.
2. Capt Hrrn’tn and his people do excellent on-the-job training.
3. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA…
That’s a turn… Scarsdale nailed it 😀
Anyway, I’m pretty sure any sane programmer would
add a clear warning in such situations, that the
simulation has ended and the situation is real.
AI even more so…
That’s true, but his first officer didn’t tell him,
that, so he didn’t have a clue until he ordered
the sim ended. As far as the computer understood,
the Capt. already knew.
Heh, I agree, but if I was Capt. Hrrn’tn, I’d be raking his first officer over
the coals for not telling him the situation! That’s his command, his crew,
and he is responsible for all of it. Sure it worked out, THIS time! They
have a lot of trainees to teach until their backup arrives, they can’t take
unnecessary risks with any of it!
This would be a good time for an FTL comm system. I have figured one
out that requires no new models for PC to acquire but only a bit of story
telling hand waving. Let me know if you’re interested and I’ll sketch it here.
I’m afraid to say it, but I think the only way in PC’s universe that they can have a real
FTL comm is if they can figure a way to send a signal through several WHs at the
same time. Or find a way to access the same space that the WHs use to transmit
matter, and make it ignore any of the other WHs while traveling to the target one.
That’s a level of science/technology I doubt the Empire will have access to for a long
time. They could drop comm satellite at each WH, but those would be my first target
in a war.
Nope. They just need comm buoys at every wormhole junction. Intra-system
data could propagate at regular lightspeed. Between systems every time a
WHJ “opens” the buoys on either side would update. Heck, the buoys could
have the capability to “open” a WHJ briefly every time an update happened.
In systems with significant bases the buoys would talk to the base and vice
versa. Even if intra-system traffic (some systems have multiple WHJs) was
only at lightspeed messages would propagate through the network faster
than the fastest courier boat. And all it takes is a wave of a storyteller’s
hand. In fact the network could still be a work-in-progress. Am I totally out
there? I mean it’s PC’s universe but we.all know how important comm is.
Everything I’ve seen so far shows the WHs stay open, they only react when
something enters them. I agree about the buoys, but like I was saying if I
was starting a major war, I’d target those buoys anytime I’d enter a system.
Cut off resupply, cut of comm, and start pounding your target as fast as
possible. Plus if the WH only allow matter through, any signal will be lost to the
realm they would travel through, we just don’t know enough about them to be
sure.
You have the core of the idea. A network of comm buoys at every WHJ. Between
buoys comm is lightspeed or by grav com continuous link. Whenever a WHJ
opens the buoys on either side update. For priority traffic buoys can open WHJ
for comm to update next node. For routine message traffic ships can “check mail”
when they can enter the system. Priority traffic is pushed as soon as the ship’s
systems are functional after transit. Significant installations maintain
continuous grav comm links with all buoys in system. Alerts propagate through the
network and are pushed to all ships as available. Non-military vessels have to
query the buoy as they enter a system and would incur a charge either per message
or on a subscription basis. Some message traffic would be pushed like an APB or
Amber Alert at no charge. If the Core declared war on the empire,
that alert would flash to all ships in range of a buoy.
The network is a work-in-progress and will be for some time to come
since the buoys require a ship to transport and activate them. The
network is the brainchild of Mr Pick, Kathy’s husband (canNOT remember
his name) and Bill Wilson. They got together one weekend for some
suds and grilling and came up with the idea. Apparently the node buoys
are not cheap and almost as complex as an AI but with enormously
more storage space – like yottabytes. The network is growing with
Terra and Catia having near-realtime links.
Well, DAMN! Fair piece of speechifying. (I still wouldn’t vote for him.)
Apparently there has been some pushback about all the college groups that
have come out in support of Hamas. Some future careers may have gone
down in flames at Harvard and Stanford. Couldn’t happen to a more deserving

While I don’t call myself a religious man, I am so sick of how his name is used as
an excuse to kill or subjugate “non-believers.” In no way has he asked anyone,
at anytime, for his followers to do that, ever! I’m talking about God, no matter
what name any group uses for him, it’s still God. I don’t know Adams, nor do I

CH (LTC) USA, Retired, Ned Moore says Amen to Mayor Adams, this time. . . .

SO, I will watch, ready, and wait.
I think the best course to take now is to return to base, call a debrief of the ensigns,

more training. Pretty much what Miral went through in tgw-298 and so on.
I’ll be honest, I can’t wait to see how Seth is doing, that poor kid
