Okay, Catman, who is this “Lion” Leonard fellow? I went to look him up and the only
WWII CMH winners with a last name of Leonard got theirs for service in Europe. I just
wanted to look the guy up and read about him. My father-in-law was a B-24 top gunner
who won an all expenses paid vacation to one of those posh resort communities the
3rd Reich operated in Poland. What was his name?
I made him up. Finding a Pacific War Medal of Honor winner
who’d retired to Louisiana would have been impossible.
And his grand daughter would have raised hell with me for
the way I described her. I know enough women who hate me,
no sense in looking for trouble.
I replied to a comment somewhere about learning from other peoples’ mistakes:
“That’s why men are no longer getting married.”
Every upvote was by a man.
Every downvote was by a woman.
It’s just that I find it rather funny how some things that literally take one
of each are sometimes differentiated like “men are cheating more often
then women”, or sometimes even implying that ALL men are cheaters
and no women would ever do it.
(Not implying that YOU said this, just as an example why I find it … funny)
As for marriages: in my experience it’s more like the other way around, decades
ago a woman always needed a man to provide for her and thus they were very
interested on “securing him”.
Nowadays they’re generally more independent, so they’re less inclined to bind
themselves to a husband – and more easily able to walk away if things just don’t
work out (being a single parent still isn’t easy … but it’s way easier then in the
1950’s)
That’s mostly due to the collage girls having outrageous expectations on who
they would date/marry, I heard this too often and it’s silly, a good part of the
men they describe would likely have no interest in them. Which explains why
men aren’t getting married, few meet their expectations. I call them out for just
wanting a sugar daddy, one they can divorce later and play the cougar roll later
in life. Pre-nup guys, prenup… It’s just for bragging rights as much as anything.
That pretty much works (or rather doesn’t) the other way ’round, too.
A nice strip I found a few years back sums it up perfectly:
—–
“I just found the perfect girlfriend for me”
…
…
“Only trouble is: she’s looking for her perfect boyfriend”
—-
I think it’s because we all are so used to being fed unrealistic
expectations, like that there’s supposed to be one perfect
soulmate for everybody. Or that everybody is looking like all those
perfectly styled pictures on name-your-platform-here or in the ads.
Ever heard a parent say “no, love, all the others are just as flawed
as you, and you will never find Mr./Miss Just-Exactly-Perfect – but there’s
probably thousands of matches for you, who’d accept you just the
way you are able to do the same”?
Instead we’re telling each other that we’re always “deserve more”.
The way I heard it, a woman searched for years for the perfect man.
When she found him, he said “Sorry, lady. I’m looking for the
perfect woman.”
Neither was ever satisfied.
I think the problem is that too many people believe that not
only can they have it all, they also believe that they deserve it.
It’s hard to have a solid relationship with anyone when you are
more concerned with your own satisfaction than you are with theirs.
I really loath the “(s)he deserve(s|d) it” or “did not deserve this” …
People born with privileges usually did nothing to “deserve” them.
People born without them don’t “deserve” to be shoved everything
over to them either.
Nor do they “deserve” to stay poor and hungry for the rest of
their lives without ever getting a real chance of improving their
status.
Somehow worst are some true crime shows or reports about trials.
It always seems to me that they’re trying to prove how the victims did
not “deserve” to killed – more as they’re trying to prove who actually
committed the deed.
“She’s always been such a sweet child, never disrespectful to her mother!
She didn’t deserve to be raped and murdered!”
Yeah. Right. And if she ever dared to speak her own mind, it would’ve been
less wrong?
My comment was specifically about the type of people who
graduate from University and think they deserve to start
at the top with a six-figure income.
The women who think they deserve an apocalyptic man
(A 666 man – 6 foot tall, 6 pack abs, 6 figure income).
The men who think they deserve a fashion model who cooks,
cleans, and fetches beer on demand.
Basically, people who think they deserve much more than
they’ve earned.
I have no problem with people who’ve inherited wealth,
unless they use that wealth to hurt others. But that’s
common, wealthy or not.
After all, it was not a man of privilege that I hired to
build my fence who stole my tools and skipped out.
No one really “deserves” any treatment they didn’t like, however there
are always exceptions. In most cases when someone demands they
deserves something it’s just entitlement, “I deserve a raise” or ” I deserve
only the best (insert them demand)” without any reason other than
“I deserve”. When I was a mechanic the Union and the company were
told by the mechanics that we were all going to go back the production
or quit because they were only paying us 25 cents more an hour more
than production. So the company to avoid the headache of dealing with
the rest of the workers (who were mostly unskilled) added a clause that
they had the right to change any pay scale they choose. After the next
contract was signed, that clause went through and a week later all the
mechanics got a $2 an hour raise. Oh the outcry! One guy just about
attacked me simply because he felt that everyone should get that raise.
I told the ass ” Can you fix that conveyor oven if it breaks down” “no”
Do you know how to replace the stamping press’s bed plate?” “well no but..”
“Well I do and deal with any fire anywhere in the plant so unless you take
the TO learn how like I did, shut up, walk away, and take it to your union
rep, NOT me. (he storms off in a huff) I had the same conversations many
times by people demanding they deserve the same raise the mechanics got.
@PC: people who graduate from Uni usually had invested
at least some kind of time, work and talent into it.
It’s their own achievement to at least some degree.
Just having money does not always require having achieved
anything.
It really doesn’t matter, it’s the end result that counts.
I could invest time, work and talent into digging a hole
in my yard then filling it in, using talent to make it
appear as if a hole had never been dug. But in the end,
my efforts would be wasted.
Or a graduate of SCAD could create a perfect work of art,
but if no one wants to buy it, what is it worth?
I had this discussion with an artist once, who claimed
that the Government (us taxpayers) should give him money
because he created beauty that benefited everyone.
My response?
“If you truly created beauty, then people would pay for it.”
The conversation went downhill rapidly from there.
The value of an object is not set by the creator, but by
the customer.
Soul mates exist, but they’re not found, they’re grown. And it takes two (or more)
people working together each with the other’s happiness first in their mind. It’s
not easy but it’s worth it. (Same is true of living with a redhead. I’ve done both.
Same woman.)
When I said “soul mates” I was referring to the naive fairy
tale that there’s one and exactly one perfect match for every
single person on the planet.
The guy from xkcd.com had quite some fun playing with this
idea while back, ultimately speculating about “what if you and your
soul mate don’t even share the same time” …
(If there’s exactly one for me, how do I know she’s alive at the moment?
Maybe she’ll be born another 500 years from now?)
Bottom line: the idea sounds sweet, but it would mean most of us ending
up lonely (by several orders of magnitude)
In my experience, soulmates do exist mainly because from the moment I met
my wife I knew she was mine, however it took my wife a couple of years to
realize I was hers because before she met me she was used by many simply
because she was very pretty and trusting. after a few years she accepted
that I was different and would never mistreat her.
I was happy to wait the time out because it was worth it! Being with someone
that was abused and mistreated takes a lot of patience and understanding
I never believed in the “damaged goods” idea, she was just handed a rough
time before I “saved” her. It was actually her that saved me, after I met her I
couldn’t get her out of my head and never have for one minute. She helped
me to feel for someone again after what happened to that girl I mentioned.
That great-grand daughter sounds like a “Karen” expecting everyone to obey
her way of thinking. So-called “pacifists” tend to be the most violent, to anyone
that doesn’t agree with them. They also tend to be racists as well. NOT a nice
person…
These core ships are commanded by morons, thinking they can get away with
overwhelming power in battle. Anyone with the slightest idea of tactics would
know that entering an Imperial space would be met with strong defense. They’d
rather pretend it’s all a lie and they can do whatever they want, when they want.
I hope this conflict is ended fast and furiously without anyone escaping, so no
one can get info on the situation and try to think of a successful tactic. This scare
tactic isn’t going to work anymore, not with how the Impmerc fleets and the Imperial
fleets are training their crews.
Has PC told us what system this is? It’s one with at least two known wormholes, so not Terra/Sol
unless something’s changed, and they are apparently close enough together that a patrol craft is
keeping an eye on both of them, so probably not Catia (I’m less sure about this one). My point is,
do the incoming Core ships KNOW they are entering Imperial space?
This is not Imperial territory, it is an unclaimed world that
is on a minor trade route. The Sparrow was there just checking
things out before they moved to another system. Using their
mass detector to search for more wormholes.
Terra/Sol started with two known wormholes, but they’ve been
busily searching for more. Have they found any?
The Cat sayeth nothing.
The Sol system has two known wormholes? I know the first one found goes to Catia.
Where does the second one go and when was it discovered? Last I remember, Catia
had 3, Northern Worlds/Lamia, Southern Worlds, and “Dragon Space”/Sol.
It’s Cissy’s. One of the first things Alex bought her
when they arrived. He’s being a gentleman.
But then, he’s pretty self-secure.
She only had the clothes she was wearing, and a small
suitcase. A quickly packed bugout bag with no clothing
and a bare handful of female items.
When you care for someone like he does her, you quickly stop worrying
about how doing something might look to the world. Buying feminine items
like pads or douches, holding the purse while she’s trying on clothes,
and so on. He’s already accepted that role with a vengeance!
Not really entering the discussion . . But have to give Jochi’s
11:16 comment a rousing AMEN!
And now to say I used to do extensive pre-marriage counselling
with couple to include the T/J Temperament Analysis and/or the
Keirsey Temperament sorter.
Looking to be able to show them possible communication conflict
areas. Even when they verbalized understanding –
Seems their pre-ordered ways still were not helped.
So I said – You run into problems, come and lets talk. A few
actually did. Some of those learned a bit as we basically worked
on it the way Jochi has described..
I finally learned to stopped trying to take responsibility for
their relationship – took a real load off.
People are gonna do what they want . . .
And yeah, I met some Bridezillas’ mothers . . . shaped the kid,
they did. Did the services, I did not.
An LCA Pastor friend stopped doing weddings and joined the Army
as a Chaplain – met up with him later.
There’s a fine line between a bridezilla and the timid, “lets get this
over, I hate crowds.” My wife was the latter, she was so embarrassed
she about crushed my hand when she got to the alter. I guess she
was worried someone was going to laugh at her or poke fun. Her
family was bad about that.
My elder sister was the bridezilla, but she’s a “Karen” so it was expected.
Nit-picked everything and made changes and told no one until it HAD to
be done NOW. Even the Pastor was fed up.
PC – Friend Story Teller –
Re: Panel Two – Technically and Traditionally;
One does not “win” a Medal of Honor . . .
The person is a Recipient of, and awarded the honor, on the basis
of what took place, as reviewed by many others.
AKA – this is the ultimate acknowledgement of behaviors under fire
of one who laid it all on the line –
explaining why so very many are awarded posthumously.
I truly mean you no disrespect – but it is a sadly common misinterpretation of it.
(Even my DFC wandered in, unexpectedly, after the smoke cleared
and the dust settled, and the pinch marks on the seat cushion
reverted to original appearance.)
You are absolutely correct, in my mind I used the word “earned” and
typed the word “won” instead.
And that second paragraph first line was unnecessary. You don’t
need to CYA when correcting me.
Thanks for pointing it out. Changing it now.
PC – not so much trying for CYA –
but to say to any who might read it – to know:
I wanted to ensure you knew of and received all due respect
– which you truly have earned in all that you do for us.
. . . . talk about “above and beyond” in story telling –
yours truly separates you from the pack.
Which is why I don’t remove critical comments like yours.
So new readers will know that I want to be corrected when I fuck up.
(By the way, I edited your comment for line length.)
It’s worth a shot, I’ll let you know if they get back to me.
I’ve had to put things on the back burner for a while, with
my wife breaking her hip and needing a new one, we’re
into the hospitals (counting mine) for about $5,000. the
final bill for my wife was $133,000 before ins. Mine was
just over $74,000 but medicare covered less on me, go figure.
Electronic Warfare Intercept Analyst here. 12,000K is nothing in
space and our current RADAR tech has a lot greater range. FYI the
APOLLO missions were tracked to the moon and back which is a
heckofa lot further. May I make a suggestion? Your ships should
have a station dedicated to Electronic Warfare with an EW Officer
and Senior NCO along with the crews to man the stations. All of
our major ships have such as well as Air Force and Army units.
Look up MOS 98J, that was my forte. Star Treks Uhura kind of
served in that role but she was a communications officer, You’d
see Spock at his Science station often reporting on various
signals. RADAR Telemetry and many other electromagnetic signal
emanations are known as Noncommunication. The EW station should
have a full crew complement able to man three shifts with a
minimum of two personnel. Of course depending on the ships
compliment one of the positions could be manned by the EW NCOIC.
And of course the Officer could be a Warrant and may even wear
more that one hat, would normally be on the shift with the
commanding officer. Actually you could mix that several different
ways. In total the EW compliment should be a minimum of twelve
people and better fifteen. A good EW operator with the proper
equipment could spoof hostile RADAR in several ways. Here’s an
interesting technique:
Also foreign ships may be identified by signal parameters. If you
want to pursue this in any manner please feel free to use me as a
reference and ask away.
Edited for line length.
Could radar track the Apollo missions if they were set up for stealth?
IIRC, everything had radar reflectors mounted on them to make them
easier to track. Imperial ships do have countermeasures, but the long
range patrol ships have very small crews, with Engineering and co-pilot
they have five men. Most of their countermeasures are automatic.
Thanks for the offer, will consult with you.
If you look at the Apollo spacecraft they could not at all be
stealthy and why would you want them to be? You would want
them to be very traceable to prove what you are doing.
You just made my point for me.
12,000K is nothing in space against a vehicle that is designed to be seen by radar.
But a ship that is designed to be as stealthy as possible, the detection range would
be much shorter.
The Core radar would have to be very, very good to pick up a
stealthed ship at 12,000K.
Once AI production ramps up, can you imagine an AI that can walk
into his ship, plug into the ship’s systems, and boost his clock speed?
They normally keep it pretty low to make interacting with biobods
easier.
That is an interesting point, given how little is openly known
as to how the AI brains are made. I doubt they are a standard
CPU setup, they just can’t run that many operations at once.
I overclocked a CPU once and it ran for just over a year until
the water cooler developed a leak, those early water coolers
weren’t made as well as I’d like. It used tubing and hose clamps
rather than the hydraulic compression fitting my new one does.
My current system has a very nice one except the radiator fan
should be better, and it takes A LOT of cleaning to keep it working
well. First time I cleaned it I felt I need a whip and a chair to keep
the dust-bunnies at bay! 8-80cm fans build up dust fast.
In my old system, I have more intake fans than exhaust fans for
positive case pressure, with air conditioner filter foam over the
intakes. I built the thing in 2016 and the interior and fans are
spotless. Two 140mm and three 80mm intake, one 120mm (GPU radiator)
rear and one 80mm top exhaust, plus the 120mm PSU fan. Positive
pressure means that any leaks in the case blow out, not suck in.
And I have three 40mm filtered in a DVD bay. Air flow is my
friend.
In the new one, I have three 140 and two 120mm filtered intake and
three 140mm exhaust (Two on the CPU radiator, I’ll probably add
two more in a push-pull) , plus the PSU. It needs more intake
fans.
Mine has 4-8cm intake fans, 3 in the front and one in the top. 1 on the radiator,
2 on the GPU, and one on the chipset. No DVD or wifi, it’s purely an on-line gamer.
I rarely get lag on any game but the CAD programs do tax it at times. It’s got an
i7 8700k and a 1080ti GPU. I need to add a DVD and a WIFI, my days of competitive
game play are over ;(. I’d love to max out the ram and upgrade to the 3080ti,
maybe if I win the lotto lol.
Please tell me that your 1080ti is water cooled and you want to sell it!
Check out the 3060, it’s fairly inexpensive. And it’s much better than the 1080ti.
I have two of them in my new computer, and it renders six times as fast.
Oh, and your top-mounted 80mm? You should reverse it. Hot air collects in
the top of the case, an exhaust fan will suck it out. That’s probably where
you’re getting most of your dust, too.
If you can mount more fans, let me know. I have plenty of spares sitting in
a box.

Re: Panel Two – Technically and Traditionally;
Anycubic is having a sale on their 3D printers.

I can certainly vouch for the quality of their resin printers, although
I haven’t used mine much.
I just looked, it’s mostly sold out. ;(
Send them a message, ask about a raincheck. Their CS is pretty good.
Point to this page, maybe I’ll get a free bottle of resin!

I have plenty of spares sitting in
a box.
