Question for other TGW followers: I’ve been watching the now ended NBC television series
“Grimm” streaming. I used to watch it but then I got sick and missed a couple of seasons.
The show is set in Portland, Oregon. My question is for anyone who lives in that general area.
On the show it almost always rains in at least a couple of scenes. Does it really rain that
much there? Like almost every evening?
Almost every city, town, or village in the US has a Main Street,
I used to drive past a sign to work that read: Atlanta <- 5 miles.
First time I seen that I just had to make the joke in my head,
"How did I get all the way to Georgia?!?"
Ok. If we’re talking Streetnames or small villages …
We do have our share of duplicates, too
You can find names like “Berliner Platz” (= Place named after Berlin)
or “Frankfurter Straße” (= Street that once upon a time went into the general direction
of a large and well known City) almost in every other town.
And some old descriptive names aren’t that original either (plenty of names roughly translate
to something like “settlement on the hill” or “we found salt here” or “we used to cross the river here”,
“village south of the fortress” or “new town”)
Well, I’ve never seen the show, but yes, it rains there. The Columbia River is the
northern border of Portland, and it flows straight to the ocean, so ocean winds (and
weather) pretty much flow straight up the river to Portland.
There are basically 5 major(ish) towns/cities on I-5 between the California and
Washington borders. With the exception of Salem, at each you can just about plan
on double the rain of the next one south. Roseburg is double Medford/Ashland;
Eugene is double Roseburg; Portland is double Eugene; and Salem is pretty much
in between Eugene and Portland. I’ve never lived north of Eugene, but I’ve lived in
all three areas for extended periods south of Salem for my entire life.
I can’t say about Portland itself. My son lives on the Columbia Sound near Rainier, OR, and
it’s usually either raining or threatening rain there. It makes Michigan look sunny and dry!
But it’s about 50 miles closer to the ocean than Portland, and I don’t know how much of that
reaches Portland.
It’s worse right on the ocean. I spent one summer in Coos Bay, and it rained hard every day
for at least half an hour. The rest of the day was usually fairly nice, so the trick was figuring out
when it would rain and scheduling your clambake or whatever either before or after.
There are rain forests in the Northwest of the USA that includes Oregon and Washington State. They are Northern rain forests with northern species of plant and animal life. Right now I am happy to know they are there. I have never been there.
I lived there as a child for a couple of years (well, Vancouver, Washington right across the river from Portland). and during the spring and fall it rains most of the time. A lot of the time it was more a constant drizzle.
I expected that, Babydoll is telling them to evacuate the area.
everything is in motion so there’s little anyone can do to stop
it. A good strategy, play nice to civilians and they won’t (hopefully)
fight you.
Yep, I figured this was all a ploy to let the queen pull something
and give the hammerheads a taste of cat anger. Wasn’t what I
was thinking but it works well. Not only Slimon now knows how
easy it is to piss off a cat, but he also owes the Queen his life or
continued health. I’d love to play “fly on the wall” in the very near
future!
Wife update: She’s walking to the bathroom (with nurse’s
help) but she’s afraid to lift her leg under it’s own power
as yet. Doesn’t help it’s still swollen.
Excellent, that is good to hear.
Physical exercise is the best healer.
I retired from ortho trauma. The more she walks
and short ones are the best. Ask the nurse
if she can elevate her leg to help reduce swelling.
Good luck
They’ve been doing that plus compression socks.
They didn’t put in a drain so it’s post op fluid build-
up. When they took out my tumor I had 2, one
in the “kidney sack”, and the other was body cavity.
She has a full hospital-type bed, she’s in a full
post-op rehab like I was last year after my
surgery, I’m concerned only because they are
under-staffed.
Good to hear. I didn’t tell you guys but my wife spent 4 days in hospital a couple of weeks
back. Something’s wrong with her. She has lost a crap ton of weight like I have and also
weighs less than in high school. She had been passing out and falling down unable to get
up. I took her to the ER after her doctor measured her.BP at 77/48. The hospital basically
pumped her full of potassium for 3 days. She had had low energy level and BP since last
summer. The cardiologist put her on something to RAISE her blood pressure. Never
knew they had stuff like that. Anyhow she’s still very frail but her systolic is now above 100
with diastolic in the high 70s. She had a walker from when she had her knee replaced 10 years
back and she uses it now.
I have a liver biopsy coming up this coming Wednesday at the VA. Our daughter is having to drive
me to the hospital for the procedure since my wife isn’t safe to drive. It’s a 40+ mile round trip to
the VA. San Antonio is a BIG city. I feel bad my daughter is having to take me but the hospital
insists I not drive for 24 hours after the procedure. They still have no clue what is wrong with me but
at least I’ve stopped losing weight. Looks like I’m not the only sick old man around here. I still do not get
hungry. I eat because I know I need to.
The same thing happened to my wife about 9 years ago, she was
a couple of points off from coma level. She has to take massive
doses or it’ll happen again. She spent a week in the hospital it
was that close… who knew?
As far as VA goes, yeah I have to drive my father 1 1/2 hours to
take him to his VA doctors, fortunately they are building a new one
a bit closer, we’ll have to wait and see. Chemo did that too me as
well, I can forget to eat since my wife’s been gone, she normally
reminds me. I did gain 5 lbs so maybe it’s over?
All improvement is wonderful. For all of you.
I have visited my oldest sister for weeks at a time several times over the past two years.
She is up 8 pounds now and now keeps things that she can also snack on whenever she thinks about it.
She also is walking from one mile to three miles a day now, all at the command of her dog overlord.
No, dog buddy. Cats are overlords.
The best to everyone.
Babydoll and the Queen are acting wisely. Unnecessary killing creates enemies and is long remembered.
I believe in avoiding killing, if possible.
Also, they seem to be very confident, that they’re in control

ARCTIC Liquid Freezer II 280 CPU water cooler 4 fan push-pull.
Windows 10 (yuck) PRO.
I figured might as well spend money I don’t have to build the
best computer I can as it will probably be the last one I ever need.
Only reason that I went with WIN 10 (yuck) is that the two 3060
cards won’t work with WIN 7. Ain’t progress wonderful?
If I’d known I’d have to build another computer, I’d have just ordered
another water cooled 1080ti and kept using my old computer. I’ll
keep it hooked up to do vote incentives and such.
The way I work is to render one panel in Studio while writing the
dialogue for the previous panel in Paint.net (it’s free).
I just wanted faster rendering to keep the workflow smooth.
Spent waaaay too much… Thank you, Patreon supporters, you have

and here I was feeling pretty good about the 8700k intel

I have yet to get it to lag so I’m good. I got it mainly for

(please don’t ask what size my 3D file folder is…)
This computer is strictly for 3D rendering, so processor and memory speed
don’t have much effect. It’s all in the video cards.
The M.2 drives are so that I can load/build scenes faster. The two 3060s render
fast enough to suit my workflow, I don’t need anything faster.
Although the 3090ti has twice as much RAM (24gig) which would let me
render larger, more complex scenes… for almost $1000 more than the two
3060s. Nah. Maybe next year…
I had an interesting revelation, about a long and stern
speech by both the the P’tera ambassador and Catain
to the council prier to the vote for war.
Going into great detail about the mound of evidence
of the use and abuse of the weaker races, amounting
to nothing more than “legal” slavery. The Core worlds
and the northren humans have done nothing but line
their pockets and pat themselves on the back while
whole planets are on the brink of starvation. The Wolf
Empire seen this and took steps first to free the
Catains from slavery, then processed to build a fair
trade Empire that no one else could do. To continue
to fight them you all are risking interstellar war just
to continue you’re reign of the trade while they have
done no harm to anyone, only to those that tried to
harm them.
This ends now or commit to a war with all the worlds
you had subjected to your evil.
The human’s have learned the lesson, what will it take
for you to learn yours.
And so on I could write the entire speech but PC does
a far better job, I’m more of a steel chair/ b-ball bat type
😉
I got that which is why I didn’t try that hard. Just a spitball idea.
I figure something like that might happen after the first real battle.
Kinda like “Aww you lost… here’s why” thing. That last bit had me
thinking of Cloud, jamming a carrot on the tip of his sword, saying
“heerre, kitty kitty…” as he pointed it at the council XD.
PC, something ‘ate’ my remark to Scarsdale about how to easily adjust his wife’s bed for relief.
A ‘heard-of’ problem?
Concerning missing comments, my excuse is that my son’s house-renovation-project (located
app. 110 km away), is getting closer to how they want it, courtesy me and her father, so not much
time to comment. But I take the time to read it, f’sure 🙂
Do you have some kind of delay between posting a comment or is it moderated.
I found the comment mentioned in my former post. If moderated, just disregard this
and the complaining post.
Have a nice day, all of you.
Jan.
I was getting a lot of spam comments about Google and Android for a while,
so I added those words to the block list. Then many legitimate comments started
to go into the trash. Fixed, now.
I hate Windows 10, mostly because of the interface, but also because it locks out
a percentage of video RAM for it’s exclusive use. Video RAM is precious for 3D
rendering, I have 12 gig but using WIN10, I can only use maybe 10. And since
my art computers are air-gapped, the phone-home feature is annoying.
Win7 was perfect, it just worked without problems.
But you can install WIN10 without a Microsoft account, dunno about Win11.
My internet computer uses LINUX, but even the newer versions want to
collect information and send it home. You can’t escape the Borg nowadays.
You can still avoid installing Win11 without MS account,
by using a few tricks, but it keeps badgering you every few
days to “complete the installation”.
I think newer versions of Win10 do something like that,
too. (You can just dismiss/postpone this dialog, and there’s
probably a way to disable it – somewhere).
The “enterprise” or whatever-it-is-called version of Win11
is a bit less annoying; it accepts your computer being part
of your companies AD domain instead of trying to hook
you up with an Azure account.
(My own experiences with newer Windows systems are
quite limited; I only use it for tax declaration and other rare
things)
You can tell Debian to opt out of the telemetry program on install,
and at least OpenSUSE is still borg-free, too.
(Unless you count updates of course, but you should be able to
configure your system to use mirrors for that …)

I’ve never been to Oregon, but according to this:
https://weatherspark.com/y/12756/Average-Weather-in-Oregon-Wisconsin-United-States-Year-Round
There’s a like 1/3 chance of any kind of rain in June which is their “wettest” month.
(Counted are days with at least 0.04″ of rain; that is 1 l/m²)
Well, not quite.
That link is for the city of Oregon in the state of Wisconsin.

Even Windows 11 isn’t THAT bad.

+ They expect you to be more or less constantly be connected to the internet.

Dear SPAM-Filter,
why don’t you like me?
yours
me
I was getting a lot of spam comments about Google and Android for a while,
so I added those words to the block list.
(Unless you count updates of course, but you should be able to
configure your system to use mirrors for that …)
About Windows eating away part of your GPU memory.
W10 is (slightly) more efficient then 7 in general.
BUT there’s the new interface which all it’s effects and
gimmicks. I think you can tune it down somewhere.
Maybe that might give you back some of the VRAM?
