First, I suspect that those Hawaiian, uhm, er, “gentlemen?” Are in for a rather rude surprise…

And second, I’m pretty sure that those ground troops are in for a VERY nasty surprise, as their EMP weapon turns out to be far less than useless…
I mean, only a couple of years have passed since the Third World War, and I’m pretty sure that any electronics used by the Navy, Army and Marines would be pretty much EMP proof…
Although, I’m not sure if anybody’s tested the Gravity Drives against EMP…
I kind of suspect that it won’t really matter as there’s probably a major EM field involved in the gravity generation side…
Can we say feedback to the EMP gun? I thought we could!

If I’m right, I would want to be those troops as the Capacitor and and power source for that gun are likely to go BOOM!

That should be, “I would NOT want to be those troops”… I don’t like pain, and this, both electrocution and explosion, would be a really nasty way to die…

“NoIWon’t Airport’ – The Gentle Wolf

‘We Made it’ (planet) – Larry Niven

‘We’re Nowhere’ (Planet) – in one of my stories…

Niven had a lot of fun naming his Near Space planets, major cities (Crashland City) and geographic features (Mount Lookitthat).

My guess is that before the jet was returned from impound, items roughly equaling the “fines and other costs” in value were removed, inobviously. Auxiliary fuel tanks? Long-range communication? We’ll see.

They think the Wildcat is dangerous above them? I’m reminded of Rorschach’s line: I’m not in here with you — you’re in here with ME!

      Well, THAT caused inappropriate thoughts.

An observation regarding the thrusters on Dragonfly attack craft. There is no way that those thrusters could function if they were completely enclosed in a Faraday cage (and before you start to argue, I was a radio tech in the USAF, my degree is in communications technology and I have spent years studying electronics and electromagnetic phenomena. I can also quote the Lorentz-Fitzgerald formulae from memory.) because they rely upon air flow to function. Essentially they are cold jets using a grav ring as the compressor rather than directly pulling upon some celestial object for motivation. Since the ring shaped grav emitters have some control electronics it is entirely likely that a focused EM pulse could knock them out at which point the thruse would pretty much drop to nill INSTANTLY! That would cause the Dragonfly to drop like a rock. I figure the treed would spread the impact out sufficiently so as not to significantly injure Miral. But I would expect her to be EXTREMELY pissed off. I would NOT want to be standing around when she got out of the cockpit.

      The key word is “focused”.
What could be the effect of a focused EMP pulse be on a human nervous system?

Depending on both the frequency and power, it could range from mild disorientation to frying the entire nervous system… Although humans are biological entities, the nervous system IS electrochemicaly based… My guess, probably a stun effect of some kind…

i forgot one important detail… (What are the drives.. magnetic .. eMp elctro Magnetic pulse.. the EMP polarizes the magnetic field..) the ‘military’ electronics , just reset the breaker, an fine.. but the drives,, you would have to replace the magnets.. 🙁 sad kitty..

natural occurring EMP ,, lightning.!! so same effect.. IF it hit you.. but if not (touch you ) no effect..
humans in the same area were not affected by ” The Counter-electronics High-powered Advanced Missile Project (CHAMP) ” but it shut down electronics in selected areas…

Rob, the thrusters are grav based as I described. If the designers of the Dragonfly craft had their heads out in the sunshine (instead of stuck up some place dark and odoriferous) then the thruster control electronics are hardened against EMP. Guess we’ll see in TGW-561.

I’m not really sure hat type of damage would be done to the aircraft in the first place.
Helicopters build up a huge static charge the longer they fly, (especially in storms) which is why they would sometimes use a grounded hook that they would attach to the copter, to discharge this electricity safely.
Whether or not someone thought of this potential issue is for the writer to know…
Personally I think that the Dragonflies would also build up a similar charge, as the gravity drives are moving a large volume of air over their surfaces, in much the same way as Jets and Helicopters do.
And yes, Jets also build up the same static charge as helos do, and often have to be “grounded out” before the ground crew can begin servicing them.

Re: Yesteray’s bumper sticker/cofefe mug idea. I had some printable magnets (thin 8.5″ X 11″ vinyl magnets bonded to a sheet of white paper) so I made up effectively a double bumper-sticker-sized sheet which reads:
    THINK WITH YOUR HEAD
    NOT WITH YOUR SKIN
I saved it as a PDF and will share if anyone knows a way I can share the file (I saved it as a PDF so that it prints with the same font I used)

I didn’t think of that. I already have a login there. It lets me comment on artwork there (such as some of your photos). I’ll see if I can UL the PDF.

New reader here, been reading this comic almost non stop for the past few days after work. I love your work Petercat great storytelling and great artwork. Is there an easy way of following the new episodes like RSS? for now I am saving the last page as a bookmark, but I am likely to forget stuff like that 🙂

Hey Petercat? I think I know what’s causing me issue with the darker pages and frames. I’m seeing very little ambient, or fill light in a lot of pictures. This tends to make the shadows harsher than they need to be, and keeps the overall image kind of dark. (Yes, I was a photographer for the government for a few years, and I tend to notice these things.)

The following link explains it better than I can.
