“Central position within the wormhole map”? I thought that was
occupied by Xanadu and the other old Core worlds that are now
effectively broken up (as an alliance). I wasn’t sure these Galactic
Council worlds had more than peripheral access to the wormholes,
more than half assuming the wormhole network was an artificial
creation by the Old Gods to facilitate the original diaspora from
Xanadu, and these new species were from other independent
sources. Hence their use of “the galaxy” like it’s significant,
traversing their know space by FTL like they do. With the
wormholes, there is no requirement that the two ends of a
wormhole be in the same galaxy, the same galactic cluster, or
indeed within each others’ “visible universe”. They could be
farther apart than light has had time to travel since the universe
began. (They could technically even be at different points in
time, although since we now know there exist, at least in places,
more that one wormhole path between two points, this could
possibly enable time travel by looping around the wormholes,
and PC probably doesn’t want to go there.)
I have always expected that the wormholes went out farther than we knew,
this just confirms this. I’ve figured that the Elder gods left After Xanadu only
because they went elsewhere to start over, like a hobbyist that can’t decide
which hobby to pursue. Being a timeless god must get boring…
The fact that Loki showed himself to Teresa says they have been looking for
their efforts to produce a race that’s more along the lines of what they were
wanting. Rather than war-like grunts that think it proves their value by
hunting/enslaving weaker races.
As far as the wormholes go, there is a chance of time-travel or
universe hopping. I think it would very freaky to discover a
universe where the Empire is a federation, like in TOS and
Picard. Meeting a Teresa that’s a blood thirsty cut-throat would
be strange to say the least.
There was something interesting to that in the novel Starplex.
In Starplex they had to be activated from both sides. Essentially they
had to figure out where a portal would go, send a probe there at
sublight and have it fly through the portal activating it.
All went well for a while until one day an entire sun came through a
portal. A sun that was too old for the universe.
It turned out that the portals were a side effect. they are actually
time portals from the future.
I won’t spoil more from the novel, but will if asked.
FTL for most of the races is just a military tactic, it’s costly
and only the larger ships can use it. To the Empire, it has
many uses and they don’t have to worry about the energy
costs unlike every race they have encountered so far. The
sleds alone make it a viable shipping venue. It just goes
to prove that greater minds can solve any problem. Rather
than just make it a “bigger stick.”
