I’m surprised that no one has caught the joke yet.
It’s been going on for three pages now.

Didn’t get the overall joke but I did like “Star Trek” references,
and the “Well, that was less than optimal”

Sorry, I went back twice and still can’t see it.

It will probably be a letdown,
but if no one figures it out by 2000 tomorrow
(8:00 PM for you heathens), I’ll reveal it.
Or give a hint, at least.

Okay, what does “Regenschirm Corporation” translate to in English?

Really Janice? You only just NOW figured that out? DING-DING-DING!
And the winner for the most clueless IS… The sad part is a good part
of the nay-sayers will be like BUWAAA?!? That’s not fair! sigh…

Other than the obvious FAFO with big red, I’m drawing a blank…
Kinda runnin’ on fumes, had the 4 month old and a 9 month calf got
out and decided to play tag with me up until about an hour ago.
Turds were snacking on my sister’s flowering bush when I spotted
    them… Had to confine them, it’s poisonous… sigh…
I hope I stopped them in time.

Calves are fine, I let them back in with the rest.
The older one found a weak spot in the hard
      fence and crawled under grrr…

According to Google Translate “Regenschirm” =
      “Umbrella”.

Not using gravity guns anymore? What is that weapon?

As to your question, PC, I’m not familiar with the Resident Evil
franchise at all, so when I got the translation my thoughts went
to “shell company”, and that reminded me of the shadowy figure
we saw once way back when vaguely threatening Teresa.
“rain screen” instead of “little shadow”. Huh.

The translation I got was “Umbrella” Corp.

Ah, I keep forgetting most of you guys spent time over-seas,
while my language skills are limited to a failed Spanish class
and what I overheard at my grand parents place.

        October 17, 2025, 12:53 | # | Reply

Yeah, but I didn’t want to spoil it since I was lucky enough
to be first. “Regenshirm” is a compound word (common in
German and that’s understatement).”Regen” is rain, “shirm”
is screen or shield. I haven’t worked with German more than
peripherally since college and didn’t know the word for
umbrella, which is a diminutive of umbra, or shadow.

And since I didn’t get the Resident Evil ref until I looked up
Umbrella Corporation specifically, my mind went to Umbrella
Academy, which again linked to our shadowy baddie and made
me wonder if he’d turn out to be an extraterrestrial.

It’s a combination plasma rifle and gravity gun. It can sense it’s target and
modulate it’s power to avoid passing through the target and burning holes
through things that shouldn’t have holes burned through them.
The problem with the gravity gun is that it pulls both ways, and the Admiral
out masses the Marine by at least three-to-one.

Then he’s lucky the gun didn’t cause him to head-butt big reds back.
I like that idea, more shots and no overshoot. pretty critical in space.

I assume that’s “everything outside of Earth’s atmosphere”
in the Sol System. Still a bit presumptuous, even the 15th-
18th Century colonialists felt like they had to actually plant
a flag on it before they could claim it, but this includes the
Kuyper Belt and arguably the Oort Cloud. Now, Portugal and
Spain divided the whole world between them, and the rest
of Europe ignored them, so if somebody else can develop
space travel and go to a rock the Empire hasn’t physically
landed on, things might develop differently.

Yay, Jochi. Somebody else wondering about overreach.
I won’t belabor my previous thoughts.
And Jason has an excellent point,
State Controlled economies are very stable.

Except that in this case, the State deliberately does not control the economy.
All it is doing is keeping the value of the currency stable.
Which beats the hell out of the fiat currency in use across the world today.
Which would you rather have in your pocket, a coin that has an actual value
of a dollar by the value of the metals in it, or a piece of paper that says
“One Dollar”, but has no real value other than a promise?

Well, I was 10 at best when Nixon took us off the Gold standard.
So for most of my meaningful financial life it’s been the latter.
I could say, being off that standard, laid the base for
a nearly five decade long economic expansion based
on the ease of global trade. Of which, I have
          profited nicely.

Or, I could be snarky and say paper is easier on the clothing.
          😉
The argument of eminent domain does seem like the wrong
          argument for the reasons stated.
In this case, I would guess the case would be restrictions
on the government competing with businesses (in the US).

Not as in tune with the secondary characters so my mistake on the name.
