I had wondered if Chira was going to want to see more,
Glad this came up for her.
    A road block huh,
could be trouble or could be they had trouble.
    Hopefully they don’t start shooting!

Sounds like a thought, but Taritha wanted to visit her family too.
Depends on how soon Seb wants to leave, I guess.
I’m sure Teresa will be happy to see her too.
Taritha’s got a lot of royal praise and admiration coming!!

I don’t know if Taritha’s visit home will be as happy as she expects.
After all, her world is now so much larger than her clan’s.
But then, she might enjoy the comfortable closeness. She’s been
away for so long, and has borne so much responsibility.

People grow and change over time, it’s family and old friends
accepting that. I STILL hear about the crazy crap I got into
as a kid even thought I cleaned up, got a good paying job,
kids, the whole nine yards. Sigh.. family… I can tell for the most
part, that never comes up with the Catians, I hate holiday get
        together’s, too much drama.

I wanna make sure I understand. The Empire has been annexing
territory without the inhabitants necessarily being aware of it?
Is that right? I wonder if the folks manning that roadblock are
even aware that they are empire citizens/subjects. What if they
do not like the idea? It appears they have managed to survive the
fall on their own. What does the Empire have to offer them? Also,
I understand Jon is the leader of the expedition. Does he have
authority to treat with folks like those manning the roadblock?
If so then how can he establish his bona fides?

Sounded like they took places in around other places and that
created pockets that haven’t joined up yet.
They might be aware of that or not.
Which is the reason for the tour. Make contact and invite them in.
If they don’t they will be forced later.
They would prefer they joined on their own, but they can’t leave
pockets like this forever. The other option would be to send troops
and create a border around them with everything that entails.
Even if it’s just for the safety of the Empire’s own people.
That’s how I understood it at least.

Some of your concerns will be answered soon, but this, I can respond to now:
This is what the Empire brings to the table:
The consistent rule of law, the same laws across the Kingdom of Jerico.
Laws that are easily understood by the average citizen.
Freedom from (unnecessary) interference in the lives of the citizens.
(Decent) security from attack from outside the Kingdom’s borders.
Absolute security in their personal property.
      A single, easily understood tax.
      Free trade within the Empire.
      Great economic opportunity.
Fairly secure travel within any Kingdom, and fairly inexpensive travel
      within the Empire.
Most citizens have no contact with the Imperial government at all, other
than the sales tax or military service.
There are other advantages, as well.
But as I’ve said before, the Empire can not tolerate any Vatican Cities
within it’s borders. Anyone who will not accept the responsibilities,
duties and freedoms of Imperial citizenship will not be forced to
accept citizenship, but they will be held to the law within the Empire,
and will have to pay the sales tax.
Why would anyone refuse? It’s not as if a man could declare himself
a King over his county and expect those around him to obey his commands.
If he tried to force them to obey, well, that would be a criminal act and he
would be stopped by Imperial Law enforcement.
This is where the Kingdom of Jerico will stop expanding, they are not
interested in sticking their toes into the hellholes of Kansas City or
Saint Louis, Or anything even close to I-70.
They are still trying to digest Little Rock, and no one is enjoying that.
Their current northern border is a more-or-less straight line from
Drexel, MO to Festus, Mo, and a far eastern strip of Kansas, Oklahoma
and Texas east of Houston. The Nation of Texas agreed to this, as they
drew the border according to the area controlled when they met up.
(Texas is having their own border difficulties, what with annexing the
rest of Kansas and Oklahoma… No one wants Kansas City!)
Texas also has a border with the People’s Republic of California which
runs through the middle of Arizona and Utah, and a northern border
with the Nation of Freemen (Old states North of I-80 in Wyoming and
Nebraska). The Nation of Freemen offers freedom to some, not all.
Enough border fights to keep all armies occupied, sadly.
It’s kind of funny, the Kingdom of Jerico is the most powerful entity on
the North American continent, yet except for the Northeast, it is the
      smallest.
The area north of Jerico, Waukanda, and the CSA is little more than
a mass of small kingdoms and grandiose “republics” in constant
      conflict with each other.

        “Why would anyone refuse?”
Because some people are just perverse.

Gee, no taxes unless I buy something,
no one to nit-pik every detail in and around my home,
the most powerful defense force anywhere in case of assholes,
why would anyone want that? 😛

        PC,
Okay. Because I live in Utah, where does the (current)
state of Utah fit into this future
(at the moment you’re discussing above)?
If I’m reading your “map” correctly, Utah is 1/2 Texas
        (yay!) and 1/2 Kalifornication (boo!).
Unless Kali used an all-illegal alien army
(because all the US citizens left)
I can’t see Kali putting up much of a fight to try and
        “conquer” the Intermountain West. Remember,
this has to include/conquer Nevada as well.
As many well-armed preppers as are in the
Intermountain West vs the disarmed serfs
        of Kali……wow!
        That’s a story I’d love to hear.

so.. Kali army, / disarmed serfs.. every tyrant ruler has used
a “Cannon fodder” front line.! with the usual promises
(food, better living, or the “I rape an kill your family.”)
also IF they are “so disarmed”,
Why? do they had the 2nd states highest gun violence.??
not all “US Citizens left”. cuz you always have the,,
          it’s my land/property,. or i wanna make a difference.
prepper: most of them moved out ‘there’ to be alone.!!
most don’t want to work with the other..
an a few want to kill each other,.
          “others” are a bonus..

I think that’s the weakest point of the story. The mighty
interplanetary empire is ruled by a small “kingdom” that
most of their neighbors don’t want to join.
So “people” on so many distant planets happily jump the
opportunity to join the empire, but their neighbors in
        their own continent don’t?
Even if they struggle and they see their neighbors flourish?
It doesn’t add up. I can agree there are some stupid
stubborn people and a few states might want to keep
their independence once they got it, but most of them?
IIRC most European and many Asian and African countries
joined the Empire too. The North America continent seems
to be underrepresented in The Empire 😉

A fair bit are either members or friendly, Like Texas or Wakonda,
it’s the rogue ones that want to run it without taking care of
it’s people are the ones that don’t want to join,
they want their countries as they see fit, not the RIGHT way.
The whole “Do as I say, not as I do” idea. Like the CSA.

Don’t assume that the people in power care about what is good
for their people rather than only what’s good for themselves –
and keeping their power is always the first thing that’s good
for themselves. We in the here and now have far too many
politicians who think this way, even though they were elected.

Check this out! I’m sure you all have heard
(probably been approached by someone running) the “Nigerian Prince”
email scam. Anyhow, I was skimming my junk email folder preparatory
to emptying it and came across this gem.
This is just the opening sentence:
“My name is king Charles Philip Arthur George,
I am the King of the United Kingdom and 14 other commonwealth realms,
    business magnate, investor, and philanthropist,
who is the owner of the Crown Estate & duchy of Lancaster.”
Now I’m getting email from HRH, the King of England!
    LOLOLOL Ain’t that a hoot?

That ranks up there with someone claiming to be prince
Omar (something something something) from Saudi Arabia
that wanted to give me $17 mil IF I gave him my bank
      account details,
never laughed so hard when I read that…
