Oh, OLDER sister, I kept thinking she’d be younger. If I remember right they
were to take off asap and head for home. Damn, that boy looks bad, I hope
with Teresa’s help he’ll fully recover. Next will be the trust issue, mostly for
the sister, while I’m sure she’s grateful for the rescue, she’s going to have
doubts at first, they always do…

We seen the tail beam in action, so I have little doubt! The Buns need to
learn duty, that even their own lives can come second to complete the mission.
I’m sure they understand it, but reinforcing it won’t hurt. They are still awe-
stuck with the wonders they are seeing, but it won’t last long.

I was thinking younger sister, too. Not sure why.

When I saw panel 8 I got the odd impression I was looking at a gender-
swapped Chardis in a peek into a parallel universe. Who is the buff tiger-stripe?

In More Soviet Science Fiction one story dealt with aliens observing
human society from a distance. The aliens observed that humans has
not been at war for a long time and that the millenias humans
had spent in space had been without weapons of any kind. The aliens
had concluded that Earth would be a pushover to conquer. They
expected the humans would have no concept of fighting or war and
would fall immediately to the alien’s conquest. The aliens thus began
their conquest by attacking the Earth ships i deep space and near
earth. The human ships had no weapons of any kind, and no
      resistance.was expected.
The damage was considerable on one Earth ship and there was
consternation and confusion before a human realized it was an
      unconceivable attack.
It was speculated that the alien ship must have had no idea what was
occurring when the first Earth pilot in desperation flipped his ship
and aimed the ships thruster at the alien vessel and sliced the alien
      ship apart destroying it.
Soviet Science Fiction was another compilation containing some good
      science fiction.
My. That rear beam was a weapon, though no human had considered using
      a weapon in ages.

        I remember that. It was Larry Niven’s Man-Kzin war series. I don’t
know which book, it’s been a long time since I read it.

Niven also mentioned communication lasers being used by ‘unarmed’ craft.
Eventually according to him, the Kzinti figured out humans had decided to
wage war no more because we were so very, very good at it.

Yes. We decided to stop because we were so very, very good at it. I
recall that part now. Better peaceful uses than war. But if the
aliens wage war against the humans, the humans applied physics and
knowledge to turn that plow blade into an intergalactic weapon.
I enjoyed reading it way back when and I last saw that paperback
before family members purged a storage area that I maintained for
family possessions while I was away. Good science fiction is good
            stuff.
I had planned on reading the 2 compilations again. We humans use what
we have as weapons when needed.

I was reading some earnest idiot’s opinion that having things that could kill
people around encouraged such thoughts, and I stopped and started counting
the things in the room that I could kill with. I stopped at 20 and hadn’t got
to the axes and swords on the walls yet, and the guns were in a different room.
Of course, I did have an open toolbox in front of me… Still not tempted to
harm anyone unless it’s to protect someone else. Go figure.

There’s a “pseudo-Latin” phrase for, “any chair in a bar fight”.
Also (not Latin), “bring any available weapon to bear”.

This is what makes me chuckle (and ignore) when I read signs at
                theater doors & other businesses,
“no weapons allowed inside”. Yeeeeah. Riiiight.
To me, “The mind is the only true weapon. Everything else is just
a tool”. Do these places expect me to take out my brain & leave
                it at home?

I’ve never read that book, but that pretty much describes what happened
when the very first fight when a human ship attacked Toby’s dagger, missiles
didn’t work so they used the ship’s engine to liquefy the crew of the human
ships. Granted the Terran ships were armed, but ineffective against the
Human shields. It was how the Terran’s got beam and shield tech too.

It’s Larry Niven’s “Known Space series. The very first human-Kzinti
encounter is one short story in a book of short stories.
The Kzinti ship had a mind reader. He reported accurately that the
humans had outlawed war and weapons.
There were sharp knives in the kitchen, but they didn’t even think of
these as weapons. And they had a very primitive space drive.
The most sensitive humans had recognized that a predator was reading
their minds, but the most powerful resistance they could find was to
think about chewing carrots. The Kzinti captain therefore decided
that he could kill the humans slowly and leave their ship undamaged
for study, by heating the human ship with a giant microwave beam.

Then the human ship began to slowly turn, putting it’s stern towards
the Kzinti ship. Did they think they could run away? But wait a
          minute,
exactly what was that primitive drive? A reaction drive, using
photons as reaction mass – that is, a huge laser! Then it was too
          late…
Instead of Kzinti examining a heat-killed human ship, humans examined
a sliced-up Kzinti ship. Word of this spread at light speed by radio.
But even the Kzinti’s much faster reactionless drive (stolen from
some genius race that “came in piece” to the Kzintis planet) was
sublight speed, so this was a very slow war – it was decades before
the Kzinti even realized that one scout ship wasn’t coming back –
and there was time to radio Earth, for Earth to radio the colony
planets, and for the colonies to reverse their anti-war brainwashing
programs and prepare to fight well-armed 500 pound bipedal cats.

When I heard about that, I wanted to go beat in some heads.
NO ONE can or should decide what gender a child has, they
aren’t old enough to make the decision as yet. And since it’s
non-reversible, that’s a parent “fixing” their gender for their
ideal child, not helping their child out. Another case of “Pay
      attention to me!” nothing more.

Funny about the vegan cat. With the exception of house cats (felis domesticus)
felines are all obligate carnivores. They HAVE TO eat meat. Their guts are not
set up to digest plant material. House cats can get by consuming some
plant-based material but even then it has to pretty much all be protein. Years
ago I read about a couple in Kali (naturally) who took their kitten to the vet
because it wasn’t thriving. Turns out they were dedicated vegans and had
been feeding the poor critter a pure vegan diet. After the couple said they
could not feed the kitten meat based cat food they agreed to leave the kitten
with the vet who found it a good home. How loony is that?! Would rather
starve their pet than feed it right. Note: per the vet we fed our calico
kitten formula for her 1st year.

I decline to comment on this for the reason that the person I am most familiar
with is not “out” to their entire family yet. But said person is now an adult and
was never pressured by anyone, to my knowledge, not parents, teachers,
friends or “authorities” to do anything permanent and irreversible to themself.
And that is how it should be. I agree children are too young and it’s NOBODY
else’s business. But I would -love- to see more research into what modern
medical procedures, especially hormonal therapies for OTHER things than
gender affirmation/modification, and current food production, which often
involves food animals and food-producing animals being fed excessive amounts
of hormones to increase production, are doing to us long-term.

Good! This has to stop, these people are so desperate to make
money they don’t care if they hurt someone, and the excuse of
“they wanted it” doesn’t fly because no child is ever sure of
themselves as to what they want and how/when/where of
anything, and teenage girls most of all. They are acting like
gender swapping is no different than owning 50 shoes that you
only wear once, ever. (Yes, wife was bad about that 🙂 )

          • markm
            September 27, 2023, 14:22 | # | Reply

Yes. Gender-changing is not like changing shoes. It’s like having
your feet amputated so they can implant hooves.
You can’t change your mind later.

Even with adults, there’s a high rate of suicide among those that had
their gender changed with hormones and surgery.
It might fix a person’s problems, but often they didn’t understand
their problems, and there was no going back. Ethical doctors used
to require a trans candidate try living as the other gender before
beginning any permanent treatments for several years.
Children weren’t even considered for transition, because they’d be
adults before they had the life experience to be sure this
            was what they wanted.

There are people who feel that some of their body parts – arms, feet – are
“wrong” and want them removed. Surgeons will refuse and send them for
treatment of their obvious mental illness. Even though that person
              may be a legal adult.
Why are the standards different for children and their genitalia?
The western world is too obsessed with sex.

I have to say that is silly, but my experience is a bit different, my legs,
bowels, and bladder felt different (if at all), because of the nerve damage,
but I never once thought about having any of it removed. That is definitely
a mental disorder, like the “surgical addiction” that many artists in any
genre can become, Cher and Michael Jackson to name a couple. And the beauty
queens, and supermodels as they age.

Mutilating a child is a criminal act.
Sexually mutilating a child is a greater form of a criminal act.
Sterilizing children is another level of criminality.
The concept that the perversions and damage to these decision-making
adults allows these damaged people to even conceive that they are
correct in mutilating a well-functioning body in any way demonstrates
the extent of the perversity that has been created in the thoughts in
      certain parts of world societies.
Allowing that there are a small percentage born that have genetic or
developmental differences, the application andforcing onto the
children of the adults almost religion of perversity does not solve
      the children’s problems or situations.
All who mutilated children criminally must be dealt with in the
criminal courts, and civil courts concerning damages.

This mess is no different from when people decided that capital
punishment (spanking) in school was a bad thing, there was a
huge increase of child crime, most of all IN school where teachers
were the victims as much as anyone. It’s also why there was a
huge increase of false reports on parents for spanking, my eldest
tried that more than once! The last time he tried that got CPS
called in and we almost lost both boys because of that, it wasn’t
until they were going to take them away that he came clean.

One of the primary hallmarks of the liberal mind (IMHO) is the drive to control others . . . (Controlfreakitis?)
and to raise hell if anyone get in their way.
So easy to see how this has gone wrong in so many ways,
Re: Scarsdale – “…thousands of hours in court …” I can envision battalions of lawyers licking their chops –
Mostly due to what I consider to be the hallmark of the lawyer mind: Making money by control of others.

We need more precise political terms. “Classic Liberal” doesn’t fit

I would call the people you describe as “Leftists”.
Nowadays, the classic Liberal is pretty much a Conservative.
John F. Kennedy, for example, would be a Conservative today.

Long ago I read “liberal” and “conservative” defined in terms of their relationship
to CHANGE. Liberals were defined as being agreeable to or even desirous of change
        – often purely for its own sake. Conservatives resist change absent a compelling reason
to do so. Extreme conservatives will resist all change even potentially beneficial change.
Today’s liberals (progressives) see any/all change as “progress” and thus desirable in
its own right. Thus the Obama era mantra of “hope and change” or the Clintons’ theme song
“Don’t Stop Thinking About Tomorrow”. They view and despise conservatives not as being
anti change but, much more significantly, being anti PROGRESS! While I am a classical (Jeffersonian)
liberal, I am not in favor change willi-nilly. If a given change will bring about a genuine improvement, I’m all
for it. From where I sit progressives are hung up on novelty! Even when status quo is working “just
fine thank you” they will still seek the “new”, the “different” and that is what leads to trouble. They
automatically tear down every fence they come to without trying to figure out why it might have been put
there. Not every “obstacle” truly is.

Just what we need, a whole new generation of wealthy young
lawyers with only greed in their minds…

“One of the primary hallmarks of the liberal mind (IMHO) is the drive to control others . . . (Controlfreakitis?)
and to raise hell if anyone get in their way.
So easy to see how this has gone wrong in so many ways, …”

Funny. I see this as the Hallmark of the the right/conservative/today’s Republican party.

You can both be correct in this. (I almost said ‘right’. 🙂 )

Far leftists are also opportunists, they see or hear someone or a group say something
foolish or uneducated, they leap at the chance to use it to their advantage.
The race card is getting weaker all the time, so now it’s the gender “issue” and political
corrective-ness. All to distract the general population from the real issues. Both the
ancient Greeks and the Romans used that and the gladiators to do the same, it’s an old
    trick but it still works.
Today they use sports teams and the social media instead of just killing their opponents
in an arena. I’m sorry if I’m crossing the line here, it’s just my opinion.

I heard the phrase “bread and circuses” a lot as a child. Never now.

All parties want control. Religions and movements also. How they do it may differ, but they all
have their means of control. The greater good are governing words that usually don’t end with everyone’s
good, nor the greater good. Do no harm is not a goal achieved either. So hopefully we will become
the humans being peaceful for millennia. But we always have Kirk just below the surface,
so that they did not kill today is a good result, until it must not be.

Your comment reminded me of that reference, before you spelled it out. Thanks.

YW. I talked with a number of Ukranian women and young women since that insanity began.
They have had generations where the young men were sent off to war for no good reason, or just killed.
The Russian civil war. Then the Voldemort starvation by Stalin. Then WW2. Then the unpleasantness of
the Communists. Gulags. The recent wars between Ukrainians and Russians manipulated by others is
now in a horrible phase. The women ranged from young to older. All of them brought up or agreed when
I discussed the loss of young men (and older) for them to marry and have families with.
