I already have a complete picture of the interstellar freight system in my head.
Rob, there is no need to size the containers to fit on a road. If one does find
itself on a road, then something has gone terribly wrong and the road will need
some extensive repairs.
As will whatever is within a good distance around it. The containers are space-only.
Bill, you won’t need any framework. Picture the freighter like this:
In front is a half-pill shaped crew section, round part forward and flat part rear.
It’s diameter wold be a little more than 3 times the size of a container. From the
flat end extends a hexagonal shaft the same size as a container, but much longer.
At the rear are engines, some weapons, etc.
Along that shaft on each of the six sides are flush sockets, one row in front, a
double row every 75 meters, all the way back to another single row at the rear.
This will allow both 75 and 150 meter containers to be attached.
The hexagonal containers would have matching flush sockets at each end, on all
six sides. They also have six built into each end, on the six corners surrounding the
doors, also on each end. These are only for attaching them to a freight station for
loading and unloading.
The way to picture them mounted on a ship is like a honeycomb. The freighter crew
never handles a container, but they do supervise the station personnel who do all
the work.
The way the station’s people mount the containers is to insert four double-ended
locking pins into the side of the container that will be facing the ship, then move
it into position until the pins go into the sockets on the ship’s spine, where they
are locked into place.
Once this is done, the ship’s crew have no way to enter a container, so any container
with content that needs maintenance, such as live biologicals or botanicals, or
passenger modules or weapons modules will need it’s own crew spaces.
(The locking pins have pass-through contacts for data transfer)
There will be passenger-hauling companies that don’t own a single ship, they
just provide passenger modules, crew and booking services.
All cargo inspections will be done on the station, by station personnel.
The shipping company is only responsible for transport, nothing else. They can
use the ship’s shuttle craft to visit the station for down time or recreation, if they
want to.
I hope this gives you a good start on building things.
Of course, if you are hauling pressurized cargo, the containers would be either
spherical, like natural gas, or shaped like a propane tank, in which case yes,
they would need a hexagonal framework around them for attaching to the ship.
I thought as much, I drove a few 24 foot box trucks to understand the idea.
Never did get my CDL though… after I was carrying a load of 3″ pipes and
got cut off, hearing those pipes bang just behind the cab was enough for me!
They weren’t strapped down tight enough and slid forward when I had to brake hard.
Think a fist full of drinking straws and the center slid out. If the cab was open to the
box, I would have died.
Allrighty then. Now I have a clearer sense of your vision I can get to work.
I’ll have your word picture to work from. I’ll email you renders. Also throw
an occasional pic up at DA so the gang can see. Did you get that adjusted
decal? How did it work? What graphic formats will your renderer accept
for decals?
Also, since I want the ships to be OD green, the decal colors should be reversed.
They’ll be landing on colonizable planets, after all.
An explanation for the shape:
Imperial researchers have discovered that for a smaller ship, that shape causes
the least wormhole flare on a slow transit. Important for exploring uncharted
wormholes, as you don’t want to show a possibly hostile species on the other
side the location of a wormhole that they didn’t know about.
Locating a wormhole without mass detectors is a bit difficult, and since they’re
based on Grav tech, only the Empire has them. So far.
No, you have it backwards. Explorer in OD Green, freighter in black.
Although the freighter ship owners will probably paint them in
company or family colors. Don’t know about the containers, haven’t
figured out who owns them yet.
PC, I was thinking of the crew cab being more like 30ft or so diameter and
shaped like a propane tank (or medicine capsule). SpaceX’s Starship is 9m
In diameter and have you seen the animations of people moving around in
the interior? And that’s only 9 meters. Shit ton of interior space. What
would a crew do with, say, 60ft? I’m thinking of a modern bulk freighter.
The part the crew lives and works in is miniscule. It ain’t a cruise ship.
Besides how big would the freighter’s crew need to be? If I understand you
they won’t be involved in loading/unloading. Unless they are in which case
I’ll need to design cargo manipulating pods – like the worker bees in STMP.
But first I gotta come up with a quarter mile long bulk freight hauler. Should
be interesting.
I already have container manipulating pods, I used one in the scene
where Chirk is showing a destroyer to that Pteran with the handlebar
mustache.
Panel 5: http://thegentlewolf.net/comic/tgw-1071/
As far as the large crew space goes, I just think it would look cool.
Maybe use the space for extra life support, or quarters for the crew’s
families? I’m thinking of generational trading families, as seen in
some science fiction, like C.J. Cherryh’s Downbelow Station series.
The kids would need schooling, training and recreation.
Ah, that reminds me of the warp 3 cargo haulers in ST Enterprise, long ships
with generational crews since it took months to a year to reach their first drop-off.
The helmsman Maywether was from one of those and he helped out his old ship
when they were being hassled by raiders.
Once SpaceX and other companies get up there, I’m sure they will
all start to building space-only ships to travel to the asteroid belt to
start mining them. that will radically change the face of the world
once that starts… I just hope we are all alive to see it’s beginning.
“…you are required to return us to our home worlds.”
(snicker) (LOL!) (ROFLOLMFAO!!)
Really?! You, as an invading force, civilian OR military, wanna go there?
Ok. You can have it one of two ways. No third choice.
One – we can launch you from our planet’s surface in the general direction of your home world.
But it’s a long way, and we don’t have space ships. Hope you can hold your breath that long as you
MAYBE hit the wormhole on you way.
Two – we can borrow one of YOUR ships, take you back to your home planet, and eject you in in an
escape pod. Think you can survive re-entry? WE’RE not gonna land on YOUR planet.
Also:
If you are civilians, you are thieves with the intend of stealing our
resources. I believe the punishment of normal crimes falls to the local
authorities and not under interstellar law?
And of course we seized the proof of your intentions, i.e. your property,
the mining rigs and extraction plant.
We will of course return you to your home world after the trial and after
the guilty have served their time.
Your families and the innocent are allowed to leave as soon as we
have trained and certified crews to man them and can guarantee a
save journey (after the war that is about to start). Your crews are
either POW’s or aiding and abetting thieves. Of course your families
are also allowed to stay. We will find ways how they can earn a
living and don’t have to get into debt with our authorities.
I suspect the King might order them to set up the rigs and run them for
his kingdom to help speed along their build-up of defenses. Since they
are no doubt set up to be lived on housing and supplies are not much
of an issue at this time. The leaders could be the only ones jailed for
any length of time.
I’m not sure that I’d trust the core to run a mining operation
on the rabbit planet, not without Something To Ensure Good Behavior.
Too much chance of; toxic waste poisoning, making equipment go BOOM,
slight of hand to abscond with the minerals upon departure…
Something To Ensure Good Behavior…….(to paraphrase from Big Jake) “your fault, my fault, nobody’s fault,
someone’s gonna get hurt”. Hurt = no one goes home, you’ve just made yourself a permanent colony
in exile, with NO communications back home. Welcome to your new life…..and eventual death.
And don’t whine about “kidnap”, or “ransom”. You brought all these
people (civilian, military, and families) here, we didn’t go get them.
Run? No.
Assemble them and have them explain how it works? Yes.
By then they could have some experts from the Empire there to
modify them so they don’t pollute.
Because that’s the problem if someone just wants to strip mine
something without a care for the environment and we have
heard of the results of the last time someone from the Core
mined something here.
Space cowboy science fiction series, one of the best. “Firefly”.
There was also a movie, “Serenity”. I have them both on disc,
and ripped them to a HDD in my computer.
Oh I know Firefly and the movie Serenity, I was so pissed when it was canceled.
I was talking about “Cat Planet Cuties,” I’ve never been big on anime themed
cartoons, but you’ve brought it up quite a bit so I’m curious.
I’ve got my Sovol repaired, but the damned thing keeps under-extruding, every
test print looks like it’s running dripping wet filament. Layer shifts, gaps, you
name it. I’ll let you know if I can find the problem. might be something isn’t connected
right on the main board. I get pissed too easily and I’m afraid I’ll bust something.
It’s a fun anime story, and pretty well written.
The fan service is built in, and is actually a part of the
storyline, which is unusual for anime fan service.
Another one of my favorites is Girl Und Panzer. That one’s
a bit hard to explain, but the artists paid close
attention to the way various WWII tanks worked and looked.
The details and physics are great, if you ignore the fact
that all of the tanks in the anime have the same top speed.
And that top speed breaks many laws of physics… GUP,
was that the one they based that campy movie “tank girl?”
There’s only been a few anime that I liked, mostly the much
older stuff like Battleship Yamamoto(?) or recently one punch
man, that’s only because it’s funny.
Yeah I heard about that, there was a lot of thing Gene wanted to do and
many talked him out of it. Like phasers were cheaper than real prop guns,
Lenard Nemoy didn’t want to run and jump and fight so the nerve pinch
was invented. The number of trivia facts out there about TOS is staggering…
and “Ninja’s ,. what Scarsdale was referring to..
at the time TOS was forming, “Kung-fu” was becoming popular,
so.. the PTB wanted a ‘ninja’ they got Nimoy’s nerve pinch.
We had a cat that was always getting on my keyboard, she managed
to find the right key combination to order it to trash the boot sector on
my C: drive. I was NOT happy! I had WIN 98 SE at the time. I had to
do a complete wipe and reinstall.
Never fails, hero and villain stories always crop up when someone has
a history of being an uncommon protector. (OH my lawd, not the mime!)
Really, you come into a private system, loaded with not only heavily armed
ships AND mining equipment, and you’re the victims? Jeez, I SO want to
“3 stooges” slap these guys! You’re just whining because you got caught!
Better yet, indelible marker, write KAREN on each of their foreheads and
let them rot a bit on their disabled ships.
Have we seen the species of the guy speaking in P6? I recognize
the Antelope people and you can’t mistake the shitbats’ hammer-
head visage. But have we been introduced to the guy speaking in
P6?
After finding out my son’s genetic issue, they kicked up his tests to be done ASAP
thankfully, the doc gave him inhalers to get him medicated but the test results
are that he’s severally asthmatic, with a touch of emphazema. Poor kid has been
terrified it was much, much worse. The only real cure is a transplant, but with
it being caught early, he might have to have one by time he’s my age (hopefully).
Hopefully they caught your son in time to delay the disease. I’m not sure how
I’d take something like that. I’ve had pneumonia 3 times plus I am a TB tine
converter but my lungs are still in mostly good condition. It’s hell watching one
of your kids be sick and nothing you can do about it. Hopefully you won’t out-
live him. My dad outlived 2 of his younger brothers and one of his sons. I’ve
done half of that – lost my baby brother in ’04.
I had a favorite uncle who went with emphysema – silicosis, actually. His family
owned/operated a brick plant and he had worked in clay/brick dust all his life.
It hurt to see him laid low. He wasn’t very tall but he was by damn the biggest
man I ever knew. I’m glad I got the chance to tell him that. He was a good dad
and husband. I tried to pattern myself after him. Tried to ask myself what Uncle
Bill would do in a given situation. I tried but I don’t reckon I lived up to his
example.
As far as I can tell from the report, the alpha-1 hasn’t manifested yet, his mom’s didn’t
show itself until she was almost 50. She’s going to be 59 next month. By time they
figured hers out, she was stage 3, he’s stage 1, so he’ll have a few years yet. My wife
and I want to help him buy a house, so he won’t have to deal with rentals as he gets
into the later stages. So far they gave him Spriva and a rescue inhaler, should get his
asthma under control for now. I’m quite sure he’ll outlive us by more than a few years,
the real trick will be him surviving on SSI alone, once he has to apply for disability.
I’m surprised I don’t have emphysema myself, for 15 years I was breathing plastic resin,
cotton dust, and formaldehyde smoke. Don’t worry about how your uncle might think of
you, I’m sure he’s proud no matter what. I learned a long time ago to not try to be like
someone else, it’s better to understand their ethics, and apply them to your own life.
My Sensei taught me that.
I thought it was the human armor that was similar. Either way,
The Storm and the Sparrow plus the Toby’s are all Imperial
hybrid design. Pretty much a dead give-away, anyway.
UNLESS the ships floated (closely) passed a window.!
most “Civilians” would have no clue,. in most cases
the ships see each other, on long range scan.!
Oh for the love of…
“Your vote or a vote from a similar network address has already
been logged for today, thank you. You can vote again in 0 hours.”
Really? Jeez…
That’s why I went to the trouble of setting up a logon at TWC.
I go there and vote once anonymously. Then I log in and
vote again. Then I log out and use the link to TGW to come
here. That way I get two votes every day. Not sure why but
TGW has dropped in the standings in the last couple of
days. But part of my morning routine is to go to TWC and
cast my 2 votes for TGW. I cannot support PC financially
so I do what I can.
Hey, guys. Per the Catman I am working on a bulk freighter. It’s going to represent
the biggest thing that can practically pass through a wormhole junction. I’m still
working out the proportions. Anyhow I put a quick render of the basic assembly
on my DA page. PC and I are in discussions about the spine of the craft. I want
the (I think) neat lattice that I managed to make back before I got sick and my
daughter and grandchildren moved in in ’21. PC seems to want a simple hexagonal
collumn. I think the open lattice is more realistic and more visually interesting.
Ultimately PC will get his way. I just hope his way and mine coincide. https://www.deviantart.com/bmullins3/art/Assy-Build-1-991146704
Oh and also to position the propellant tanks at the aft end of the thing
I used trigonometry! I haven’t needed my trig since got out of electronic
R&D back in the 80s. Positioning the tanks at top and bottom was easy
but the four on the sides required calculating the sides of a 60 degree
triangle. It worked out that the centers were offset 32.5 units from
center. The modelling program will let me place an object to a high
degree of precision. I just calculated opposite and adjacent for a
60 degree triangle. Trig in the real world! Who knew?
Heh, Try fabricating a machines without it. I’m so rusty now, I’d have to
relearn part of it even try now… As it was, I was the only guy in the shop
who knew ratio-math well enough to do it in my head.
I’m testing a way to get around the Fusion 360 limit for free users, they
limit you to 10 files, or pay about $60 a month to use it. I’m not sure if it’s
stored files, exported files, or what. I’d rather let a program do it, then
crack the books again! heh…
Just a thought, I’d add docking rings for maintenance tugs, with a ship
that long, no one’s going to want to space-walk it just to fix a bad
sensor jack, or have to travel to the engines for repairs.
I said I used trig, didn’t say I remembered the actual trig functions.
But that was easy enough to look up. Google is your friend (most
of the time) 😉 . I remembered enough to know the main terms and
that trig functions are ratios of the parts of a triangle. I remembered
that if you had an angle and one side then you could calculate the
other sides. I took trig in high school fall semester of ’68.
Heh, mine was in ’75, the teacher was a young-ish man that HATED teaching,
he was fond of throwing erasers and yelling at everyone. I didn’t learn much
from the man, other than how to powder someone’s face with chalk dust!
I got lucky after joining the maintenance shop, I ran across a copy of
“The Mechanic’s Bible,” it had all the facts and figures commonly used
for fabbing and construction, best damn book I ever bought! In ’85 it
cost $250 and had a waiting list that was a year+ long to get…
Sounds a lot like the “Machinest’s Handbook”. (I think that’s
the title, I’m too lazy to go to my shop and look) The hardback
costs about the same new or used.
I found a 1997 edition in a flea market bookstore where all
hardbacks were $5.00 and snatched it up along with a hardback
“The Bell Curve”.
Suckers weighed a ton.
I already have a complete picture of the interstellar freight system in my head.

Wow, you guys have really got some ideas going there, can’t wait to

Well, most of my ideas came from being a truck driver hauling containers.
It’s pretty much the same system, modified for zero-G.

Yes, good eye. But that’s a video screen, MS Lizzard paused it.

ships AND mining equipment, and you’re the victims? Jeez, I SO want to
“3 stooges” slap these guys! You’re just whining because you got caught!
Better yet, indelible marker, write KAREN on each of their foreheads and
let them rot a bit on their disabled ships.
Have we seen the species of the guy speaking in P6? I recognize
the Antelope people and you can’t mistake the shitbats’ hammer-
head visage. But have we been introduced to the guy speaking in
P6?
He’s a rather portly Shitbat.
The Hammerheads are a separate species as seen when they met Taritha
and discussed becoming neutral on Ptera.
Okay. It’s been a while. Left to right P5, Shitbat, horned one, hammerhead.
Got it.
L to R: shitbat = Gortha
horned one = Kor,na
hammer head = Sph
and they are all , admin supers.
when was the last time a ‘super’ really worked.!?
Update, he’s been using the Spriva and it’s already made a huge difference for him! 🙂
It’s good to see him smiling again.
I am surprised the bad guys did not react to the Empire Armored guy in the corner.
Or is he from Lamia?
Oh I’m sure by now, it’s common knowledge that the Empire is out there.
But they seem to think they can still dictate the rules to everyone.
it’s already been said. the Core has similar armor.
way back when they first took Chirk’s slave ship.

*powder*
