Like he said, he had to be taught to use it.
Do schools even do that today?
      Doesn’t seem like it.

The military has consistently been the best anti-poverty program
in the US government. It lifted all the boys in my father-in-law’s
family from poverty to relative prosperity. Army, Navy, Air Force
all included (no Marines). He was a B-17 mechanic in England
during WWII, and he had “experiences.” One brother was a
fighter pilot when jets were just coming into use. One was a
submariner. One was in the OSS in England during WWII, with
Bill Donovan. One of my uncles started as a “bedpan commando,”
and ended up as a pharmacist with his own drug store and lots
of money. At the very worst, it trained people to get up and
accomplish something every day, follow (and give) orders, an
orderly way of thinking, and how to set goals.

I used to be a teacher – darn good one I’d say.
But it was a private school and I had tons of
    resources to do things right.
Well one might ask where Gramps went to school.
Districts like Oakland, and LA had some real issues.
New teachers were and still are given the “war zone”
    schools.
And migrant kids are skipping these days because
their parents are afraid of getting snatched by ICE.
And there were some cases of principals faking test results to look better.
Truth is, being poor makes it damn hard to get a decent education.
Military has always been the option. My dad went to the
Marines when he was flunking out of college.
Came back and ended up leading the computing
    revolution in the 60′

That sounds like my high school, just the basics, and barely
that. Anyone tht had special needs were sent to the “dummy
class” AKA “Special Ed” class, that was taught by the newbie
teachers, few stuck it out. That’s part of the reason I wanted
to join up myself, there was more than once I discovered I
was smarter than some of my teachers. I’m no genius but
some of the stupid crap that came out of their mouths made
me dumber… I learned more reading books than I did in school.

Mini-tanks? Boarding pods? I had thought of self-propelled
grav drive drones with a mounted plasma gun to open the
hull to enter, but that? Very interesting! And much safer for
    the boarding teams.

I’ll give you an idea how much of a tom-boy my wife is:
“I’m going to hit the bathroom before Dad does.”

I said “NO! don’t hit it! I’ll have to fix it!”

Oh shut the hell up…” while giggling.

She was laughing here and read this to me from FB,
    Posted by “Entitled Gramma”
“I realized something, baby diapers are called Luvs
or Huggies because if the baby poops, the parents
still love them. Adult diapers are called Depends.
When a grown-up poops, the one that cleans them up
“depends” on who’s in the will”
LOL, mean butt true 😉 😀

Walmart sells some adults called “assurance”
      I assure you, they leak…

        I dunno…
If she laughs at your jokes, it might be a bad sign.

Funny thing is, both she and another gal used to
complain that I was making them laugh too much…
but I’ll grant ya, I’m funnier when I drink 😉

        That is very good.
But please get some better jokes.
If you are having second thoughts
you are two up on most people.

Dad jokes are a rare skill, just think of the dumbest things to say
and tell them with the utmost seriousness. After the eye-rolls and
the half hidden snickers, you laugh at their reaction 😉
I’ve always tried to get at least one “HUH?” per day 🙂 😛
If you think I’m bad, you should have met my father, he was a MASTER!
There was one day last year, my wife was hunnydo-ing me heavily,
so I went in our room, put on my ratty old suit jacket, draped a worn
out dish towel on my arm, walked up all prim and proper and spoke in
a bad english accent: “will that be all, Madam?” She snatched the towel
off my arm and threw it in my face. HA! 😀 Service with a smile!

Nothing speeds up promotions than a war-time footing.
      Besides, he deserves it!

Gramp’s last name isn’t Smalls, is it? Something about escaping
with his family in a stolen boat reminded me of an older story…

I had the same thought. Back when “Fox and Steel” met
the river guards to find the pharmacy stash and found
      the owners.
