I strongly suspect it’s along the lines of “Irreconcilable differences shall be settled with a duel. If the loser survives, he is expelled from the clan.” I don’t do newspeak well. “They is expelled” and “they are expelled” both sound wrong in that context, as bad as “it is expelled” for different reasons. But the “he” is clearly gender neutral, right? Maybe “A surviving loser is expelled” to avoid a pronoun altogether.
