“My way or the hyway” kind of guy Sgt. Markham seems to be handling
this better than I expected nice little twist there PC.
“Sticky vine?” Sounds a lot like the carnivorous plants on Earth, can’t
remember the name off hand but they have beads of sticky fluid on
the stems that curl around a trapped insect. Kinda scary how big these
could be! A rodent would make it about 10x the size of the earthly
version! I had a Venus flytrap when I was a kid what no one told me
was the leaves will die off if you “feed” them more than 3 times…
yeah it didn’t make it 🙁
The Imperial Marines are very scientific and well planned in their training.
Their DIs absolutely can NOT be sadistic or inflexible. Everything done in boot
is planned to the Nth degree for best training in the shortest time, and their
methods are constantly being updated and refined as the information flows in.

Same with any US military DI. They CANNOT be sadistic or bullies. They will
be removed from duty ricky tick if any other drill sees them misbehaving.
The DIs put up a good front of being mean, but their sole goal is to break
you down of your civilian “lah-dee-dah-dee” habits, and rebuild you back up
again to military bearing, training, and habits.
I’ve been retired over 20 years, and I still miss “the life”, even though
I can no longer keep up physically.
My father says the same thing often he was stationed in Korea, he was
part of the extraction teams that were pulling out the equipment and man
power post-war. He never saw any real action but from his stories there
was a lot bobby-trapped ordnance and equipment. He showed me a picture
of the tank they reworked as a “tow truck” to recover tanks and trucks that
were stuck or broken down. Pretty interesting stuff! My father also told
me about the incident when they were pulling out a tank that got wedged
between a couple of large trees, there was a wounded NK that had hidden
under the tank so when it moved he triggered his grenades killing one of
the unit and himself. luckily my father was in the tow truck and didn’t get
hurt.
Sgt Markham adjusted quickly to treating Sunny as a person. He must have SOME
knowledge, even if it was second hand until now. I can’t tell if the one in the red
shirt to Aramil’s left is a slightly-pudgy-chested male (I have no room to talk) or a
small-breasted female, but it looks like I see lipstick. But, that would mean the
Marines were rethinking their policy of only allowing male recruits. Interesting
either way.
Well I guess we can add calf and feet structure to the sexually dimorphic traits
of the Ptero. I wonder which gender tends to run faster.
The person in the red shirt looks like a female to me. And over her right shoulder in the 2nd row is what
looks to be another in a grey t-shirt. Looks like the Imperial Marine Corps has gone coed. If they can
meet the physical requirements, why not?
That was my thought as well. Lets face it, if someone that’s clueless
the first thought is “oh pretty can I pet you” and when they get an
image of being on fire or a big mac with eye balls they’d freak out.

Truth be told when I was working out my chest was like that, heard
a few bad jokes until I got tired of it and took off my tank top (spent
too much time on upper body) then I got the nick-name of Magilla Gorilla
(Hanna-Barbara cartoon from those days) which wasn’t as bad.
I think the P’tera males are general propose structure where the females
were more likely fast runners to carry to safety the young and protect
themselves. Faster and more able to protect the nest as well. they clearly
have more natural armor. But that’s at a pre-cultural level, I’m sure all the
races of known space were at “cave man” level at some point.

If I knew how to delete a comment once posted that would offer a backdoor way
to edit a comment. Copy the bad version – delete it – paste in the bad version
and edit as needed – save. Simple. But after I hit “save” the comment never
showed up after the refresh. Even now the only option I have in this heavily
abridged version of chrome running in the lobotomized version of android which
runs on this Kindle is “Post Comment”. I’ll try to get access to my PC to send

it – when I am able to get to the machine. We have had our daughter and

Colonel (if I recall correctly) who gives an excellent breakdown of the problems with
females in the military. It takes much more than endurance and the ability to withstand
pain to be successful in combat.
Heinlein argued this was the basis of chivalry. Men are more expendable. As best I recall,
the basic argument was “If a culture loses 90% of its men, it can be back at full strength

As for coming back to “full strength”, Jochi, you’re underestimating the maximum breeding rate
of the Human species. We’ve can easily quadruple our numbers in a single century without even
trying (or rather: while trying not to for most of that time).
The 45% loss in population might even hit us harder. Our economy is that over-specialized and
interdependent that it will at least make some waves. Think covid-lockdown + financial crisis +
oops we’re out of fuels all added together and happening at once.
Good news! My scooter has finally arrived and they’re delivering it and attaching the power lift for it
tomorrow (Thursday). I’ll soon be mobile again. Good thing, too. Got some appointments coming
up that were going to be a stone bitch to go to without it. Somehow I almost always end up parking
in the south 40 of the parking lot. The wife is doing well recovering from the leg break/knee
replacement and pacemaker implantation so we should be able to start our weekly grocery shopping
runs back up.
It comes in (no shit) candy apple red and there isn’t room to put flame decals
on the tiny little fenders. I have ordered a sticker that says “USAF Veteran”
for the seat back and plan to stencil it with “Your tax dollars at work”.
Hoping that one or both of those will trigger the odd snowflake. If the urge
hits me I may pimp it out more farther on down the road. I’m just looking
forward to being able to get out of the house without needing to take pain
meds and an anti-nausea pill.

I agree with the military action or not, once we have sent
troops into war (by whatever name) we own them care

You should add a sound system with Harley big twin sound effects. A diesel air horn and
Ride of the Valkyries would be suitable, as well.

Which leads me to one question:
Are dragonflies common knowledge at least with the Marines?
If not: have the drills been briefed on their existence?
A few people know about them, but they’re not common knowledge.
Does the boot camp know?
