Any number of issues could come up with their ‘rules of evidence’, from something as reprehensible as ‘slaves are non-persons and as such their testimony is inadmissible’ to ‘evidence seized by violence is inadmissible’ (originally intended to combat government overreach). If they have abolitionists, it’s obvious their culture isn’t as homogeneously evil as their treatment of the Catians led us to believe. Or, if it’s something that only lets HIM off, as Aaron seems to be implying, his level of concern for his crew is quite in keeping with our first impression of his character.

You’re right in that he has concern for his crew as he should. The question, I think is, does he have the same concern for the Cations? I don’t think so and from what I remember he was almost as bad as his father, except he may not have kept trophies. Can they legally go to the abolitionists? From what he said they cannot as they have to use ‘Earth’s laws’ to prosecute.

Was I being that opaque? I meant that he seems perfectly satisfied with a factor in their rules of evidence that — in my interpretation of Aaron’s words — will make prosecuting HIM difficult but not help the guilty among his surviving crew at all. I may be misinterpreting. And what I said about the abolitionists basically argues against the ‘evacuate all the Catian slaves and resurface the planet with asteroids’ option for handling his homeworld. It has nothing to do with the trial.

Sorry my mind goes off in tangents sometimes. You are right they as a society are not inherently evil as the numbers point out. 19 good vs 10 evil, but where does that leave the XO? By his admission the king smacked the abolitionists down to get his way. They have only one chance to get everything in line to prosecute, so where can they go from here? I mean the XO is as guilty as his dad, but what has Aaron seen to perhaps keep him from being found guilty? I do not have PC’s imagination.

Be grateful that you do not have my imagination.
That’s all I’ll say on that.

I would be tempted to go the expedient route, drop them on a Catian planet in their underwear along with a few hundred flyers explaining who they are.
